The Big Boy Locomotive Chase - Green River to Evanston Wyoming May 6th 2019
The Great Train Case continues across Wyoming and into Utah! This week we chase through the night to Evanston Wyoming where we really get out first up close look at what well be the best restoration of a steam locomotive. And in this case the largest steam locomotive in the world, one of, if not the, largest steam locomotives ever built.
Here at Evanston the locomotives are placed in the siding for 48 hours to accommodate track work. Also here at Evanston they have been working on the shop roundhouse and depot for years and they are working RIGHT NOW to get more finished. Then on to Ogden down the Wasatch Grade in Echo Canyon to celebrate the driving of the golden spike on May 10, 1869. Where our story will continue next Sunday!
Evanston’s Historic Roundhouse & Rail yards were constructed in 1912-1914 by Union Pacific Railroad and features one of the last intact roundhouses on the UPRR line. In 2009, the city was able to refurbish the first of four sections of the Round-house as a public facility. The bi-level structure includes a spacious gallery, un upper level lounge, three small boardrooms and/or one large classroom. It also contains an elevator and two kitchenettes. Roundhouse Section One can easily accommodate up to 1,300 conference attendees and exhibitors. With a state-of-the-art audio/visual system, stages and podiums, banquet tables and chairs, the facility is fully equipped to host events of nearly any size. Across the plaza is the Machine Shop (renovated in 2004), a 17,000 sq. ft. building with a catering kitchen. The Roundhouse & Machine Shop can be rented together or separately. In addition, the community has an ample selection of caterers available to service such occasions. The City of Evanston proposes a minimal flat fee charge for the use of the facility. Reservations must be made as soon as possible, as the facility is used frequently throughout the year, especially during the summer months.
From their web site:
The Roundhouse gallery/ballroom can hold up to 900 attendees. The Portland Rose Classroom can accommodate 115 guests. Three small boardrooms can be sectioned off and each can hold 21 guests. The Upper Mezzanine Area can be used as classroom space, as well, and holds a capacity of 200.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pacific Railroad and later as the Overland Route) was a 1,912-mile (3,077 km) continuous railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 that connected the existing eastern U.S. rail network at Omaha, Nebraska/Council Bluffs, Iowa with the Pacific coast at the Oakland Long Wharf on San Francisco Bay. The rail line was built by three private companies over public lands provided by extensive US land grants. Construction was financed by both state and US government subsidy bonds as well as by company issued mortgage bonds. The Western Pacific Railroad Company built 132 mi (212 km) of track from Oakland/Alameda to Sacramento, California. The Central Pacific Railroad Company of California (CPRR) constructed 690 mi (1,110 km) eastward from Sacramento to Promontory Summit, Utah Territory. The Union Pacific built 1,085 mi (1,746 km) from the road's eastern terminus at Council Bluffs near Omaha, Nebraska westward to Promontory Summit.
China Town, Wyoming - Main Street, Wyoming
Among the waves of immigrants to Wyo. territory in 1870 were groups of Chinese workers employed by the Union Pacific Railroad. Their arrival eventually led to the Rock Springs Massacre of 1885. This tragedy has often been told, but less well known is the tale of these resilient people, and the lives they created for themselves along the rail lines of Southwestern Wyoming. Historical archaeologist Dudley Gardner, Historian Barbara Bogart, and Evanston's Director of Renewal Agency, Jim Davis, tell the story of these industrious individuals

Cowboy Country Cody (Beartooth Mountains Wyoming)
This is an area of Wyoming that is steeped in Cowboy History with Wild Bill Cody establishing the township in the 1900's, there is a state park and dam named after him too.
We did a little business in town, tried our hand at fly fishing, but were not successful, and toured the Bear Tooth Mountains a couple of times to see the spectacular roads and sweeping views.
There is a William Cody museum in town and a year round rodeo at the park, we preferred the outdoors but have been told both are excellent.
Cody is a lovely township, very western cowboy style, but also a dash of boutique and coffee shops and restaurants - which is lovely.
A lot of history in the area.

World's biggest steam engine 'Big Boy' back in action
One of the world’s largest steam trains has returned to the railway tracks in Wyoming, following a five-year refurbishment.
Big Boy N0. 4014 is back on the tracks. Only 25 of the 132-foot-long machines were ever constructed, designed for hauling freight over mountainous terrain in Wyoming and Utah.
The train company Union Pacific took on the challenge of refurbishment in 2013, towing one of the old locomotives from a museum in Pomona, California, to its Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The Wild West - America Campaign [Mission 1] Transport Fever [ep1]
Welcome to Cheyenne, Wyoming, 1864. Our goal is to build a stretch of the intercontinental railway between Cheyenne, and Promontory Summit, Utah. We have 10 years to reach our destination. Can we do it or will we fail?
We start off in Cheyenne with a Grain run. Hauling grain from a farm to a storage facility. Simple but the building block for future expansion. Once completed we are given the task to connect the first leg of the journey from Cheyenne to Laramie. To avoid expensive tunnels, we take the rail line through a nearby valley. Our first hurdle is a river crossing over to Laramie, and we spend far more than we need to on a bridge.
After Laramie, we must deal with some Indians, which we do so by bribing the Indians with Firewater. It is much cheaper than buying them land of equivalent value, and it doesn't cause us to lose the opportunity for the Gold Nugget.
We continue onwards to Rawlins, and lay down a fairly straight track to connect Laramie to Rawlins. We extend the track further into the desert, but decide instead to run a Freight line hauling Iron Ore from Rawlins to the Tools Factory in Laramie. It will allow us to make some additional cash which will help finance the rest of the construction of the line.
We get the Iron Ore Train running with 3 Gondolas and one Boxcar, which should allow us to haul tools back up to Rawlins to make even more money. We extend the track further, and then go off in search of the Gold Nugget.
This video is part of a Gold Medal Challenge series. That is, to acquire all 5 medals within the same playthrough. If you would like to read more about how to get each of these medals, see my Steam Guide here:

AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage – only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on YouTube are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!
