In this first video from MRD we can see one of our content creators, Michael testing out the new Class 321 by Armstrong Powerhouse on a journey from Shenfield to Liverpool Street on the Great Eastern route in Train Simulator 2014.
MRD is currently an idea which we hope to progress into a project to create commercial add ons for Train Simulator 2014 (Railworks). More info and videos will be shared over the coming months both here and on Steam Workshop. Watch this space!

Eternal long-haired losers who also have some of the best tunes this semi-legendary band has only released 8 albums in its long existence but each of them is a bonafide classic.The ASTRONAUTS 2nd album ALL DONE BY MIRRORS judged by those who heard it as among the best albums of the 1980s was a stunning collection of explosive pop songs and traditional folk ballads recorded at a time when all their gigs were with anarchist punk bands.Their 5th album IN DEFENCE OF COMPASSION experimented with ambient house music years before other conventional bands even thought of doing so.
Inspired by the UK punk explosion Mark Astronaut formed the band with a few friends in 1977 and began playing local gigs in their hometown of Welwyn Garden City. By 1979 The Astronauts were regularly appearing at free festivals and gigs in London organised by a hippy collective known as Fuck Off Records and from these began a close friendship with London punk bands Zounds and the Mob.That year the first Astronauts ep was released on local label Bugle Records and musically it reflected the hippie drug culture combined with the energy of punk.'All Night Party' still sounds like the paranoid nightmare it did back then.The record established the Astronauts on the local gig scene among the non mainstram hippie/punk/biker crowd.Also in 1979 an ep was released under the assumed name of RESTRICTED HOURS on the Stevenage Rock Against Racism label.'Getting Things Done' attacked the political apathy of smalltown life while 'Still Living Out The Carcrash' was musically a typically nightmarish theme.
By 1980 gigs throughout England with Zounds had won over an army of fans and the 'Pranksters In Revolt' ep sold all its copies within weeks.Musically the 4 songs were not as adventurous as the first ep although the lyrics were as incisive as ever.Like many great bands from the postpunk era the Astronauts were completely ignored by the UK music press which then as now was only interested in anything trendy,fashionable or middle class.Local fanzine Zero began to champion the band as did the local newspapers.
'Peter Pan Hits The Suburbs' was released in 1981 to widespread acclaim.Incredibly it received great reviews in virtually all the UK music press.The typical Astronauts audience at the time was largely hardcore punks attracted by the energetic gigs and a handful of hippies so the album was something of a surprise.Full of heartfelt folk ballads and featuring legendary jazz saxophonist Lol Coxhill the album was not what fans had expected but appealed to a different audience.The contradiction of heavy chaotic punk performances and structured melodic alternative pop/folk/ambient songs continues to this day.
Throughout 1982-1985 there were hundreds of gigs with the many anarcho punk bands of the era.'All Done By Mirrors' (1983) found the Astronauts at the top of their game. Bursting with tunes and melodies which would have been at home in the mainstream music charts and bristling with indignation the album remained unknown beyond their core fans .'Soon' featured great songs but was let down by lifeless production while 'Seedy Side Of Paul' combined a scathing indictment of the 1980s attitudes of greed with some truly wonderful songs.By 1986 Mark was fed up with constant gigs and decided to slow down.Astronauts songs were always socially aware and 'In Defence Of Compassion' had the usual great tunes but an underlying bleakness .By contrast the 'Constitution/Please Don't Come Around Tonight' 7 was an upbeat pop punk gem.
From 2006 a new lineup re - energised The Astronauts with a heavier punchier sound and they continue to play gigs & release new songs.

2nd Night of Live 105's sold-out Not so Silent Night. Everybody waiting in line got heavily rained on from ~9am to 3pm while they lined up early for the show :P Many fans recognized each other from previous shows. One of us (who was also the 2nd person in line!) even got called up to join the band on stage for ‘Know Your Enemy’!
For ‘Longview’, Billie invited a young fan to play and sing with them. After the end, the kid asked Billie Joe and Mike Dirnt if he could play another song. After listing a few he knew, he then choose ‘J.A.R.’ Afterwards, Billie was so impressed that he let the kid keep the guitar, which pleasantly shocked him and all the fans.
Before ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, Billie Joe paid tribute to the victims of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland. “What I’ve always loved about the Bay Area is that we have the best freaks and weirdos on the planet. This is our own… this is our people… friends of friends… So my heart goes out to all those people who perished in the warehouse.”
Unlike the October 20th Green Day show we went to at the UC Theatre which ended well after midnight, the Oracle Arena’s curfew was 11:30pm, so there was no encore this time. There was also a lot more crowd surfing this time as well :P We were in the 1st row for that one as well, and the only crowd surfers I remember going over us were the 2 that were invited up on stage, lol, I believe the 1,400 UC Theatre might have been a bit too small for a mosh pit to break out :P

U15A's Wasps v Harpenden (22-12)
Match Report.
It' s no w joke. This was one of the best performances of the year from a lean, mean, tough Wasps side.
The league standings suggested that this should have been a win for Wasps, but no one was prepared for the massively controlled use of possession. Approximately 70% of the possession was Wasps, and most of the game was played inside the Harpenden half. Harpenden chose a very small pitch at a local school which immediately nullified our pace and creativity out wide. Wasps had to come up with a game plan to suit the conditions and made the excellent choice to receive the kick, against the wind and the slope (it snowed all morning), and play the pick and drive pods game.
Without Wasps' two A team scrum-halves, Ben Bell was drafted in from the Bs. He had a great game and played to the plan all afternoon. The pack truly played as unit, with every player making hard yards, all making great tackles, and most importantly, everyone being quick to support the runner and having quick ruck ball. On the odd occasion when Harpenden got the ball, Wasps managed to win turnover. (Thursday evening training is really having an effect.)
The centres, Matthew, Celton and Hugo, tackled fantastically all afternoon and ensured that Wasps quickly returned with possession. Although the back three of Archie, David and Simran had little to do, they all managed to gain yards, and used the kick effectively.
The first half was totally dominated by the forwards: George D and Zico A scored tries, both converted by David B. Jack's conversion into hooker is gaining momentum; he took two hooks against the head and the scrum went forward every time. Wasps even stole some lineout ball through the excellent Benedict.
The second half should have been much easier, but the cold and fatigue started creeping in. Some decision-making was flawed and after a great decision to kick a penalty goal (Wasps were now up 17:0), Wasps started making life hard for themselves by playing in their own half and allowing the excellent Harpenden backs to run at them. Two quick Harpenden scores brought them to within five points. This was the moment that Wasps realised that they should play in the opposition half; they kicked for territory and started to squeeze the life out of the resurgence. A glorious try (was it FOUR handoffs!?) by Matthew D completed the scoring and Wasps were clear and worthy winners.

British mathematician Michael Atiyah (1929-2019) studied in Cambridge where he became a Fellow of Trinity College and later held professorships at Princeton and Oxford. He is best known for his work on the K-theory and the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem. [Listener: Nigel Hitchin; date recorded: 1997]
TRANSCRIPT: The index theorem, which is what I spent much of my time working on in one form or another, is concerned with the linear differential equations. Many linear differential equations are… occur very often in mathematical physics… the equations of Maxwell for electromagnetism are linear equations; so linear equations aren't necessarily simple, they can be quite complicated. And in studying linear equations, but not just in a piece of flat space but perhaps on a curved space, then life gets complicated; not from the original nature of the equation, but from the space in which you’re studying it. And that… so very often you will want to study an equation not in a whole space but on some curved part, for example. And so these equations you may want to study, you may want to find their solutions. That's what people do; you have a problem, you want to solve it. If the questions are very complicated, then it becomes impracticable to necessarily find the exact solutions; it may be just much too difficult. And yet you want to know something about it.
So the first thing you may want to know is, how many solutions does this equation have? Has it got one solution or a large number and if so, how many? Well those kind of questions are sometimes… you can answer those questions sometimes without finding the solutions. You may be able to predict how many there are from considerations of the global picture of the whole story. And that's where the curved global aspect, the topology we study, can help you to predict how many solutions there are; without knowing them at all, individually. So it's a very powerful method and when you’re dealing with complicated problems involving many dimensions, many variables, very complicated stories… the real world, or anything approximating the real world tends to be complicated. These qualitative arguments which will predict how many solutions you may get to your equation, without finding the exact solutions, is a tremendously powerful weapon. And this occurs all over the place in parts of mathematics and physics, so that the index theorem is a use of topology, more or less, to predict how many solutions equations can have.
And it has therefore a wide range of applications because of the general nature of the problem and it brings together different parts of mathematics; the parts concerned with the differential calculus and differential equations, the parts concerned with the large scale behaviour of curved spaces and the topology and puts them all together in a package. And the theorem itself has a rather simple… sometimes a simple form and sometimes a very complicated form, depending exactly how you look at it, but it has a very wide range of applicability. It applies in a whole range of problems and that's partly why it's so important, partly why it's interesting, partly why so many people work on it from different directions. So that's the position of the index theorem within this context.
Then the other thing you mentioned, things like monopoles and instantons; they arise again in contexts where these non-linear phenomena – these topological things which are not present in purely flat spaces – occur. There are situations in which you get complicated solutions to differential equations. For example, the the one of the best examples of a soliton was a thing which was observed in a canal in Scotland where a boat barge was moving down the river and produced a big wave in the front, which then, sort of, moved off by itself and propagated down the canal as a kind of hump. And there was a very graphic description, and this was first observed by the man who saw it who galloped after it on horseback and he saw this lump of water floating down the river for a long time. That's an example of what's called a soliton. It's a, kind of something which can occur for a certain kind of complicated differential equations where you get a lump of whatever it is – matter, electric charge, water – which is somehow confined in a particular region and moves as a sort of single entity. It behaves like some kind of particle, but actually it's not a particle because it's a bump of water within a sort of whole continuous background; and yet it behaves like a particle...
