Spalentor - Basel, Switzerland
David's Been Here is in Basel, Switzerland touring all the city's main sites and historic monuments. Here David presents Spalentor, one of the three remaining gates to the city. Spalentor was constructed back in 1398, when the entire city was walled in. In the 1900's the walls were destroyed to expand the city; the iconic gates, however, were left untouched. Visit this beautiful monument and main site of the city with the David's Been Here Guide to Switzerland, now available for your Kindle as well.

Basel, Switzerland: My Favourite Place (a Local's Guide)
Basel, Switzerland! This is where I grew up in (I'm a local) and today I will guide you through my favourite place or spot in wonderful Basel City by the Rhine river: It's called Spalenberg. For this we need to go to Spalenberg (you can search this area online). It is full of authentic restaurants, bars, shops and boutiques and makes me feel at home. Make sure to try the famous Chäschüechli (cheese tart) in Basel from either a bakery or if you get the chance at Herbstmesse or a Christmas Market. You get them all year round here though at Spalenberg. After having enjoyed a tour a Spalenberg, you can continue a bit more to Spalentor (a former city gate of Basel) to get some history in. Later you can come back here and enjoy your trip to Basel. With our tips you can have a life in Switzerland like the locals do!

BASEL TOUR WITH DRONE (4K)
Basel is one of Switzerland’s cultural hotspots that has a wide variety of activities on offer for its visitors. From the city’s major tourist sights, such as the Basel Münster, as well as inventive museums, like the paper mill museum, to creative activities, such as a ghost tour of the town, Basel promises a successful trip for all ages. Read below for our pick of the top ten things to do and see.
The part of Basel that lies roughly between the river and the old city gate at Spalentor is not large but quite atmospheric with its stone streets, medieval churches, beautifully maintained old homes, and brightly painted fountains. But leave it to Basel to introduce a thoroughly modern and whimsical fountain by Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely in the midst of the stately historic houses. Filling a pool in Theaterplatz is a series of playful and ingenious water-spouting contraptions made of scrap metal. In winter, these freeze into fantastic ice sculptures.

Basel Switzerland - The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois
From Veince I jumped on jet star airways for only 35Euros and flew to Basel Switzerland. Basel is located between Switzerland, France and Germany. When exiting the airport make sure you follow the signs for your country. I did not, I followed the signs for the bus. When I got out, I was looking for bus 50, which I never saw. Then I looked on the other end and found it. Problem was that I could not figure out how to get thru the gate. I went back in but it was as if the airport came to an end before getting to the other side. Finally I asked and found that I was in France. I had to go back into the airport, go upstairs, thru security then down the escalator to finally find myself in Switzerland. It was crazy! When staying in Basel, public transport is included. Just show your hotel reservation and it is completely free and very easy to use.
Finally I arrived at my hotel, the best one in all of Basel, The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois. The location was perfect, located right on the Rhine river next to Mittlere RheinBrucke, (middle bridge) offering amazing views! Just a short walk will take you to the town hall, Munster Basel and many more amazing sites!

What To Do In Basel Switzerland: My Top 8 Basel Attractions!
Learn more about Basel on my blog here:
What to do in Basel Switzerland? After I followed a local for a couple days, here's my top 8 Local Basel attractions in the city.
8) The first Basel attraction you can't miss is the Basel Minster or the Basel cathedral. This is the biggest landmark in the city. Most Basel city maps, magazines, and pictures feature this twin spire gothic cathedral.
7) The Rhine Ferry. This is a must see for Basel attractions. The ferry's are essentially pulled by rope across the Rhine river. It's probably the most fun you can have while crossing over the Rhine, and it's cheap too!
6) Mittlere Bridge. What makes this Basel city bridge so cool is what happens under the bridge. Locals love to sit under the bridge to BBQ, socialize, or just lay out. It's a great place to swim and kayak in the spring or summer.
5) Gate of Spalen. This is a rich historic Basel attraction. Basel has three city gates that still remain since the 1400's. The gate was a main entrance to Basel city for trading purposes.
4) Tinguely Fountain. Jean Tinguely is a famous Swiss artist and sculpture who gifted Basel city with this attraction. These mechanical structures now serve as famous attractions for Basel tourism.
3) Zivilstandsamt. A special Basel attraction for my local. This is where many locals celebrate their civil ceremony when they get married.
2) Offene Kirche Elizabethen. Have you ever heard of a church that also rents out space for parties? Well, that's exactly what this church does, and it's awesome! A beautiful venue and an important Basel city landmark.
1) City Hall. This bright red Basel city attraction serves as the seat of the Basel government and parliament. Walk inside to see it's beautiful courtyard and intricate decor.
Now you know what to do in Basel Switzerland, have fun and eat as much chocolate as you can!

Basel is one of the important cities of Switzerland. One of Switzerland's underrated tourist destinations, Basel has a beautiful medieval old town centre, a vibrant Carnival, and several world class art museums built by architects like Renzo Piano, Mario Botta and Herzog & De Meuron. Basel is also rich in architecture old and new, with a Romanesque Münster (cathedral), a Renaissance Rathaus (town hall), and various examples of high quality contemporary architecture, including more buildings by Herzog & De Meuron, Richard Meier, Diener & Diener, and various others.
Located in the Dreiländereck (three countries' corner), Basel is a gateway to the Swiss Jura mountains and nearby cities of Zürich and Lucerne, as well as the neighbouring French region of Alsace and the German Black Forest. If interested in a trip to the country side visit Sissach a nice little town about 20 minutes from Basel. There are a number of things to see and do if you have a few days to spend.
This is the standard mode of travel for many within the city. Old Basel isn't very large and there are many narrow and winding side streets with incredible slopes. Basel has an extensive tram (light rail) and bus network.
The city itself has 19 quarters:
Grossbasel (Greater Basel):
1 Altstadt Grossbasel
2 Vorstädte
3 Am Ring
4 Breite
5 St. Alban
6 Gundeldingen
7 Bruderholz
8 Bachletten
9 Gotthelf
10 Iselin
11 St. Johann
Kleinbasel (Lesser Basel):
12 Altstadt Kleinbasel
13 Clara
14 Wettstein
15 Hirzbrunnen
16 Rosental
17 Matthäus
18 Klybeck
19 Kleinhüningen
Most of the old town attractions in Basel are in a walkable area between the Basel Zoo (just south of the Basel SBB train station) and the Rhine. Since most stores are closed on Sundays, it is a good day to plan to see one of the many museums, which are usually open. Basel and surroundings have over 20 museums, and many of these have a free opening hour at the end of the day.
Münster and Pfalz. Walk up cobbled streets and alleys from Marktplatz or Mittlere Brücke to Münsterplatz (Cathedral square) to see Basel's Münster (cathedral). Elisabethen, Elisabethenstrasse. St. Elizabeth is relatively underrated in Basel guides and maps given its historical significance. Marktplatz, Market square. Fresh fruits and vegetables, breads and pastries, flowers are available each working day. Considerably more vendors on Saturday morning.
The Gates to the Walled City. A (third) ring of fortifications around the whole old city was constructed after the great earthquake of 1356, to provide security for the then roughly 20,000 inhabitants of Basel. A number of these gates can still be seen at the perimeter of what used to be the medieval city: Spalentor
Basel prides itself on having more than two dozen museums, covering a wide range of subjects, from art - emphasized below - and architecture to cartoons and even doll houses. Among others, there is the Anatomical Museum of the University Basel, Berri-Villen and Museum of Ancient Art Basel and Ludwig Collection, Former Franciscan Barefoot Order Church and Basel Historical Museum, Company Archive of Novartis, Haus zum Kirschgarten which is part of the Basel Historical Museum, Historic Archive Roche and Industrial Complex Hoffmann-La Roche, Jewish Museum of Switzerland, Caricature & Cartoon Museum Basel, Karl Barth-Archive, Kleines Klingental (Lower Klingen Valley) with Museum Klingental, Art Museum of Basel, hosting the world's oldest art collection accessible to the public, Natural History Museum of Basel and the Museum of Cultures Basel, Museum of Modern Art Basel with the E. Hoffmann collection, Museum Jean Tinguely Basel, Music Museum, Pharmacy Historical Museum of the University of Basel, Poster Collection of the School for Design (Schule für Gestaltung), Swiss Business Archives, Sculpture Hall, Sports Museum of Switzerland, Archives of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, UBS AG Corporate Archives, University Library with manuscripts and music collection, Zoological Garden (Zoologischer Garten).
( Basel - Switzerland ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Basel . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Basel - Switzerland
