Solo in the Sierra Nevada

Long day out in the high mountains of the Sierra Nevada. This is such an amazing place for high treks and seems to be very much under-used especially in the off-season. I did actually cross paths with one couple and saw a handful more over on the summit of Caballo but otherwise, I had the mountains to myself. I'm sure that on the same day, a Sunday in March, even in miserable weather there would have been way more people in the Reeks in Kerry or the Peaks in the UK.

I did over 25km and 1800m of ascent, mostly on easy terrain. I did scramble a little bit but I could have bypassed this. The guidebook route is 17.5km and 1400m of ascent. There is very little snow this year compared to previous years but an axe and crampons are advisable.

I followed a route in a book called Walking and Trekking in the Sierra Nevada by Richard Hartley - Route 10 - Pico del Tajo de los Machos and Cerillo Redondo and added on an out and back to Refugio Forrestal Elorrieta. If you want a guide Richard runs a trekking company called Spanish Highs.

Europe's most Southerly 3000m Peak - Cerro de Caballo, Sierra Nevada

A stunning mountain in perfect weather conditions. Cerro de Caballo is the most southerly of the Sierra Nevada's 23 summits over 3000m in altitude. We drove up from Lanjaron to a height of about 2000m and climbed to the summit from there.
