Carnival of the Animals (WASO and Spare Parts Puppet Theatre 2018)
This collaboration between the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) and Spare Parts Puppet Theatre places both orchestral performance and puppetry into a new context.
Puppetry lends itself to music; it becomes an instrument to be visually musical, imaginatively allegorical and poetic. The music of the orchestra, in this case Saint-Saëns, is the language that will give voice to an experiment in the intermingling of material constructs and performer.
This is the first collaboration with WASO, with a premiere season as part of WASO’s Family & Education Concert series in June 2018.
Carnival of the Animals wove together the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, large scale puppetry, time-lapse footage, animation and verses by Nick Enright, performed a highly diverse voiceover cast, to create a portrait of a city. Over the course of the performance the stage became a new depiction of place, juxtaposing human with animal, natural with built environments.
Co-creators Michael Barlow and Leon Hendroff reframed the verses as expressions of the hopes and dreams of people living in the city. Sculpted figurines of each character and a diorama of their place were revealed with each verse, accompanied by projection of time lapse footage of the city, and the land it sits on. Following each verse, as the orchestra played, large scale animal puppets amongst the orchestra to enact scenes of connection and family.
Carnival of the Animals marked Spare Parts first partnership with a major performing arts company and both organisations are eager to continue working together.
Blueback - Adapted by Peta Murray from the book by Tim Winton
Blueback is an evocative story set along the Western Australian coastline. It captures the mystery of the sea and the majesty of an old fish called Blueback, and the moment when an inquisitive boy stands up for what he loves and believes in.
One of Tim Winton’s most personal and quintessentially Western Australian stories, Blueback will nourish your heart and the beautiful poetry will resonate with you long after you leave the theatre. This award-winning production is an underwater menagerie of exquisite puppetry and an extraordinary celebration of the Western Australian coastline from one of WA’s most beloved authors.

Amana Living Arts Festival 2019
The 2019 Amana Living Arts Festival celebrated life, learning and friendship by encouraging older people to take part in a wide variety of creative experiences. From 11 February 2019, over 1000 Amana Living residents and clients took part in more than 90 events over six weeks. Highlights included puppetry making workshops with Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, song-writing classes with WA Charity Orchestra, dementia-friendly ‘tactile tours’ of Sculpture by the Sea, and drawing workshops with award-winning artists.
This is the second year the event has taken place. It is a partnership between Amana Living, individual artists, and the State’s leading arts organisations such as WA Symphony Orchestra, Lester Prize (formerly Black Swan Prize for Portraiture), Sculpture by the Sea, WA Maritime Museum and the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre. This year, the Festival introduced an intergenerational element with the participation of two Perth schools - John Wollaston Anglican Community School and All Saints’ College – in two interactive arts projects with Amana Living residents. It is the only Festival of its kind in Western Australia.
