Finns flock to a free outdoor public sauna
(18 Dec 2016) Several hundred people have already visited the free 'Christmas Sauna' in Helsinki city centre, according to organisers of this annual winter tradition.
The 'Christmas Sauna', located in the city's historic Tori Quarters, has been placed in the courtyard of the City Hall this year.
There is no entrance fee, and lockers as well as changing rooms and a washroom are available for guests.
Going to sauna is part of traditional Finnish culture, as almost every family have a sauna in their home.
More than 1,000 people visited the 'Christmas Sauna' in 2015.
Organisers expect to exceed that number, as numbers of visitors seeking this traditional Finnish experience grow every year.

Here’s a text summary of the video:
There’s over 2 million saunas in Finland. From sterile saunas of gyms to lonely shacks on the countryside. Most saunas are private but there’s also a persistent tradition of public saunas.
Lately there has been spawning new public saunas, and one of them was even mistakenly called “Helsinki’s first true public sauna” by New York Times. But let me show you a sauna that would really earn that title and even more.
Helsinki proudly presents, the most public sauna in the world – Sompasauna. Why is it worth the title? Because it is free of charge and always open. It is run by voluntary donations and voluntary work.
The smaller sauna is open also during winter. You just have to bring your own water and wood. For ice swimmers sauna is even more important during winter. Sompasauna is the only free option in town.
Mostly the place is for going to sauna but sometimes there’s more special events like after-parties or karaoke nights but on the video there’s a glimpse to the annual Sompasauna summer ball.
However, the sauna will close it’s diy doors soon – at least in this location. Within a few years the whole cape will be apartment buildings.
Sompasauna is looking for a new location, and surely the story of the world’s most public sauna will continue in one form or another.

Finland is the land of saunas. It's estimated that there are over million saunas in Finland. Where there is a lake, you'll undoubted find a sauna, but you there are saunas in gondolas, on boats, and even at Burger King if you can believe it. But the most typical way to experience a sauna in Finland is to first jump into a freezing cold lake. This is our hilarious attempt at experiencing a Finnish sauna the Finnish way.
