Corfu Town: New Fortress seen from Spilia Square.
Spilia: this means 'cave', and is the name given to the area around the old port and to its south, derived from the cave to be found at the entrance to the New Fortress. Here, in early Christian times, two stone icons of the Virgin Mary were found, one of which was placed in the Cathedral and the other left in situ. It now rests in the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Spiliotissa, which was built to house it.
Spilia Square offers а view tо the New Fortress. Directly ahead is the Spilia Gate, one the two remaining gates of four that used to give entry into the Venetian town. In this square can be seen Port Authority and Courthouse buildings.
Captains House Apartments - holiday rentals on Hydra Island Greece
Captain's House offers two neighbouring Hydra holiday apartments on a single level, overlooking Hydra harbour and all of the town spread below the terrace for a family of 4 in apartment 1 and a couple in apartment 2.
The quickest way up from the harbour to Captain's House is to take the steps on Sahinis Street. If you have suitcases though, it's best if you follow the mules bringing your luggage which take a less steep but slightly longer route.
In the evening, with the terrace shaded from the hot summer sun, it's like being the audience in a darkened theatre looking out at a beautifully light stage set. The view will make you gasp and smile. Wow, it certainly is curtains up for your Hydra holiday.
The house is on one level and has two parts. Apartment 1 at the front and apartment 2 at the back.
The sitting room of apartment 1 especially reflects the nautical heritage of the family who owns the house and their role played in the Greek War of Independence. For history lovers, Captain's House is very close to the Lazaros Kountoriotis Mansion where you can find much more information about this turbulent and heroic period of Hydra's past.
With its double ensuite and twin bedrooms, apartment 1 is well suited to a family of four. The windows from the sitting room and bedrooms overlook the terrace with the dramatic views to tempt you to go out and explore.
Though modest in size the galley kitchen with fridge and two-ring hotplate is well set up to enable you to make breakfast & simple meals on those days when you prefer to stay at home.
You get a different perspective of the town from the 100m2 terrace than you do when walking along the actual lanes of the town. Trying to work out the location of the places you visited during the day and looking for Hydra's landmarks in the evening, sipping your favourite sundowner is particularly entertaining from your loftier angle.
Renting apartment 2 is a good option for those who want to be close, but not that close, to friends and family staying next door. But it is independent enough with a separate entrance to be private if booked on its own. Apartment 2 is also a great winter rental for those who want to spend their days exploring and walking to come back to a cooked dinner at the time of year when the choice of Hydra restaurants for dining out is limited. Katia who manages the house will be happy to quote you a favourable winter rate especially for longer, out-of-season stays.
The pretty courtyard at the back of the house is very private and an attractive place to sit but you won't miss out on those all-important views. You'll find sitting on the side terrace at the top of the entrance steps still shows enough of the town and harbour to be a delight.
Walking down the steps brings you quickly to the West corner of the harbour.
The popular Veranda is the closest restaurant, literally below the house.
And your nearest swimming place is Spilia on the west corner of the harbour, where you can dive straight into the crystal clear sea. But if you prefer, the boats to the main beaches moor in front of the clock tower and it takes only 5 minutes to reach them from the house.
To book either or both of the Captain's House Apartments, please find Katia's direct contact details on HydraDirect.com and have a wonderful time on your next Hydra holiday.

Ferry passengers transported to southern Italy for hospital treatment
Nine passengers rescued from the ferry that caught fire off the coast of Corfu on Sunday were flown to the southern Italian city of Lecce, a Greek Merchant Marine spokesman said on Sunday.
The rescued passengers were then transported to three different hospitals in the area, according to an Italian Air Force captain.
Two children and their pregnant mother, who were suffering from hypothermia, were transported to Galatina hospital in Lecce province.
A dozen other passengers were hospitalised in the town of Copertino, according to the hospital's manager.
A fire broke out on the car deck of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic, travelling from the western Greek port of Patras to the Italian port of Ancona on the Adriatic on Sunday.
The ferry had 422 passengers and 56 crew members on board.
Greek and Italian rescue helicopters and vessels struggled to reach the crippled ferry, battered by 90 kilometre per hour (55 miles per hour) winds that pushed it toward the Albanian coast.

Entry from: VESSA CHIOS, Greece
Entry Title: Vessa - A Historic Village of Chios
Entry:
A HISTORIC VILLAGE
VESSA is one of the famous mastichochoria and along with others have the best-preserved fortified settlements of the island. It was built between the 14th and the 16th centuries in order to control and protect the inhabitants and their valuable product which was the mastic resin.
It is really so historical, and picturesque and I was amazed seeing that many of the original houses out here still survive.
Vessa preserves its medieval character and this is the reason I am here to see all this.
The people are really friendly, and I walked throughout the village where I found women in beautiful small gardens chatting with friends. I sat with them and told them that they are lucky that they live in such a beautiful place.
They however told me that they got tired of these houses they live in, and wished they had more modern houses instead. I believe they are so wrong, and because of these very old houses their little town is so unique and beautiful.
Upon reaching the centre of the village you come to a big square with sycamore trees.
The old school now houses a coffee shop. The lady there is called Lemonia.
She runs this small business and is renting the building from the Municipality.
We had lunch and dinner there the 2 days we spent in this village.
The restaurant and coffee shop offers free internet service to its guests - pleasantly surprised when Lemonia told me that I can use my laptop and work from there.
Vessa is a medieval village that lies in the center of a big agricultural basin and it has a main gate, which is in a very good condition. The area has a well laid-out streets and high narrow buildings that look like towers. Although the fortified surrounding wall has been split, the whole village stone houses remain in a very good condition but many of them are dilapidated and empty. There are many big and wealthy houses in the area that were built by prosperous emigrants. Among the village churches is Panagia, Agios Dimitrios and Panagia Petrousena, which is considered to be the most ancient church of Chios, according to the locals.
I have some very beautiful pictures from our 2 day stay here.
I had the chance to meet Vassilis, a local who is so passionate with his village. We were lucky to meet him because he showed us a lot around, proud of the work he does in Vessa to promote and make the village more attractive.
You see, we had all the lights of the mansion lit and when he saw all those lights he thought his friend the owner of the hotel had come, so the following morning he knocks on the door planning to meet him. To our good luck he met us instead.
I told Vassilis that I am writing a guide on the island and he was pleased to help me. We had dinner together in the evening. After 10.00 pm when dinner was over Vassilis offered to show us around and with much passion and love for his village we followed him. We saw part of his work, and what Vassilis wants is to get resorces from the governemnt and put more lights in the narrow streets of the village to make it even more lively and beautiful.
See the next entry with just photos! It is interesting I think.

Messina Tours
Messina Tours - Just a few kilometres from the Italian mainland, Messina sits on a curved harbour at the northernmost point of Sicilys Ionian Coast. For centuries it has been a major transport hub and today its an important gateway to and from the island. A big, busy, traffic-clogged city, it is unlikely to waylay you long, but if you do find yourself passing through, there are a few sights worth checking out. Its impressive centre has wide boulevards and elegant turn-of-the-century buildings, its cathedral is one of Sicilys finest, and the local swordfish is celebrated by gourmets across the island. Historical monuments are thin on the ground, though, as the city was virtually razed by an earthquake in 1908 and then devastated by mass bombing in WWII.
Messina is, and always has been, about the strait, the impossibly narrow stretch of water that divides Sicily from the Italian peninsula. The Greeks mythologised the straits clashing currents as the twin monsters of Charbydis (the whirlpool) and Scylla (the six-headed monster), and swimming there is still dangerous. The currents are not the only danger, though. Beneath the choppy sea is a geological fault line that poses a constant threat. In 1908 it provoked a devastating earthquake – Europes deadliest ever – which sank the shore by half a metre and killed between 84,000 and 200,000 people.
Modern seismologists worry about what effect it could have on a bridge built across the channel. Plans to construct the worlds largest suspension bridge over the strait – which have been on the drawing board for years – are still a bone of contention, with successive national governments regularly giving them the go-ahead, then cancelling them.
Enjoy Your Messina Tours!
