Hiking from Spiller's Cove to Codjacks Cove, Twillingate, NL
Travel writers Keith and Heather Nicol recently hiked some of the superb coastal trails in Twillingate, Newfoundland. The Spiller's Cove to Codjack's Cove trail can be done as an extension of the French Head to Spiller's Cove trail or as a separate loop. From scenic Spiller's Cove the trail passes along a particularly attractive section of coastline composed of small offshore islands and sea stacks. The trail is like a roller coaster with each highpoint presenting the hiker with a new view.Toward the end of the trail there is an osprey nest on an offshore island and we saw the osprey soaring overhead looking for food. This trail just over 7 km long and will likely take 2-3 hours to complete. The trail head is at: 49 39.670 N and 54 43.855 W. For more hiking information check out:

Sleepy Cove Copper Mine, Twillingate, Newfoundland
Obediah Hodder stopped his failing mine at Sleepy Cove around 1917 to start up a cooperage in Twillingate, but later returned to Pennsylvania. His abandoned mining and cooperage machinery lay rusting until the Crow Head Town Council gathered it together and transformed it with crimson and yellow paint into playground equipment for children of the village.
Foundering Iceberg in Twillingate Newfoundland
This video captures a spectacular view of a multi-storey iceberg breaking apart in Spillers Cove, Twillingate. Twillingate is also known as the Iceberg Capital of the World. This sleepy fishing village sees numerous of these frozen ancient giants drift down iceberg alley each year and visitors travel from afar to Newfoundland Canada to witness these awe-inspiring phenomena each year. This giant iceberg broke apart on Saturday 5 July 2008 at 3:45 pm in full view of a group of tourist specators who hiked out to the point to view the iceberg - one of the last of the season - and Mother Nature responded with this perfectly timed show. Much of the sound in the video comes from the release of trapped gas in the ice which is made up of age-old pure fresh water. More about the community where this took place at
