Queensland by Rail | Part 4 - Spirit of Queensland to Cairns
In this fourth instalment of my Queensland by Rail series, I explore the town of Charleville before leaving that night on a long distance coach. Upon arrival in Brisbane, I had only a few hours to spare before I left again on the Spirit of Queensland (formerly the Sunlander) which took me from Brisbane to Cairns.
Along the way I saw epic scenery from mountains to 800m long bridges over rivers, to endless fields of sugar cane. The modern diesel powered tilting train sped along at up to 160km/h, completing the 1681 km journey in just under 25 hours. This train should be used as an example of modern long distance train travel done right.

Kuranda Scenic Railway & Spirit of Queensland Trains at Cairns, Queensland.
Cairns station sees 3 regular passenger services: Twice daily Kuranda Scenic Railway tourist trains, 5 per week Spirit of Queensland connecting to Brisbane& a weekly Gulf-lander service another tourist service. (all in each direction)
1552 hrs: 1774 & 1771 return to Cairns station with the 1400hrs Kuranda Scenic Railway service from Kuranda
1559 hrs: 1774 & 1771 depart Cairns station with the empty cars from the 1400hrs service ex Kuranda
1620 hrs: Spirit of Queensland service arrives, having left Brisbane at 1545hrs the previous day. Power cars 5409 & 5405
1709 hrs: 1734 & 1744 lead the 1530hrs service ex Kuranda through the former Stratford station site.

Cairns to Brisbane 'Spirit of Queensland' Tilt Train at Tully Station
Filmed during October 2017, the Southbound Spirit of Queensland is seen making its scheduled stop at Tully in Far North Queensland. The train is about three hours into its 24 hour journey, having left Cairns at 9am bound for Brisbane. The scheduled 10 minute break at Tully allows passengers and staff a bit of time to stretch their legs on the platform and admire this beautifully maintained and managed QR heritage building.

A Ride on the Spirit of Queensland from Cairns to Townsville
A ride on Queensland Rail's newly refurbished Tilt Train service, the 'Spirit of Queensland', from Cairns to Townsville. A fascinating and varied journey through tropical Far North Queensland on QR's premier long distance, high speed service. The tilt train is designed to negotiate the tight radius curves of the 3 feet 6 inch gauge mainline at comparative speed. When new, this was the fastest narrow gauge train in the world! During the video, we see how tight some of the curves are, yet the ride is so smooth and quiet that you have to remind yourself that this is indeed narrow gauge! We start the journey at Cairns Central, right in the heart of the city. The distant mountains initially form a majestic backdrop to the suburbs. We pass both the container terminal and the docks, where a large oil tanker is moored. Suburbia quickly gives way to wonderful scenery; seemingly endless fields of sugar cane and banana plantations, all surrounded by those mystical, mist clad mountains that form the Great Dividing Range. As we travel south, we have short breaks at Innisfail and Ingham. At Ingham, the weather has changed and the warm, tropical rain is falling. Finally, we arrive in Townsville, six hours after leaving Cairns. As the train departs southwards towards Brisbane, 17 hours away, the heavens really open up into a full on tropical downpour.

Cairns to Townsville by Tilt Train
This clip covers a journey in Queensland from Cairns to Townsville aboard the Tilt Train. It starts from Cairns Airport on board an airport shuttle bus to Cairns Central Station where the train was boarded. The service is run by TravelTrain. The journey lasted just over 6 hours. The clip finishes with a walk to the centre of town to Holiday Inn.
The supporting audio is performed by a young group of artists in Sydney, yet to get a record contract. The track has been used with their permission.
