Leh Ladakh Spituk Monastery 2018
Leh airport as seen from Spituk Monastery - Leh, India
Kushok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport is an airport in Leh, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is one of the highest airports in the world at 3,256 m (10,682 ft) above mean sea level. The airport is named after the Venerable Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, whose 19th Incarnation was an important Indian and Ladakhi Statesman.
Due to problems with terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, the security in Leh Airport is paramount. On flights departing from Leh, hand baggage is not permitted, with the exception of a camera or a laptop bag. As of August 2015, this rule is not enforced. Passengers also have to identify their check-in baggage after scanning, and before being loaded onto the aircraft. Additionally, a substantial number of police and the Indian Army patrol the airport. Also, due to the presence of mountain winds in the afternoon, all flights in Leh take off and land in the morning. Passengers are expected to report 2 hours before scheduled departure time to provide adequate time for security checks. The approach into Leh is also very challenging as the approach to the airport is unidirectional, due to the presence of high terrain towards the Eastern end of the airport.
Spituk is yet another interesting monastery, on the hill top near Indus about 18 kms. from Leh on Srinagar road. The Spituk monastery offers a commanding view of Indus. It has a totally new Gompa within the monastery as well as the old Gompa has also been restored meanwhile. It is constructed in a series of tiers with courtyards and steps. Higher up in the hill is a chamber which houses the enormous statue of goddess. Its face is covered and uncovered only once in a year during the festival time.
The Spituk Gompa was founded in 11th century by Od-De, the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub-od. The Gompa was named Spituk (exemplary) by Rinchen Zangpo, a translator came to that place and said that exemplary religious community would rise. Initially the Gompa was run according to the Kadampa school then during the reign of king Gragspa Bumide he converted it to Gayluk Pa order. Many icons of Buddha and 5 thangkas can be visited in this 15th century monastery. The Dukhang Hall is the largest building and has two rows of seats running the length of the walls to a throne at the far end. Sculptures and miniature chortens are displayed on the altar. There is also a collection of ancient masks, antique arms and fine thangkas. Higher up the hill is the Mahakal Temple, containing the shrine of Vajrabhairava. The terrifying face of Vajrabhairva is unveiled only at the annual festival in January.
Every year, on the 17th and 19th day of the 11th of the Bodhi month, the Gelukpa order of monks celebrate the Spituk festival known as Gustor. During the festival, the lamas wear the masks of religious deities and perform the dances, which is normally about good and evil and mythological stories related to the Buddhism.

Spituk Gompa - Beautiful yet precariously placed monastery in Leh, Ladakh
Spituk Monastery, also better as or Pethup Gompa, is a Buddhist monastery in Leh district, Ladakh, northern India, 8 kilometres from Leh. It was founded by Od-de, the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od in the 11th Century. Founded as a Red Hat institution, the monastery was taken over by the Yellow Hat sect in the 15th century. The monastery contains 100 monks and a giant statue of Kali which is only unveiled to the public during the annual Spitok festival. Every year the Gustor Festival is held at Spituk from the 27th to 29th day in the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar.
Leh was the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh, now the Leh District in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Leh, with an area of 45,110 km2, is the second largest district in the country (after Kutch, Gujarat) in terms of area. The town is still dominated by the now ruined Leh Palace, former mansion of the royal family of Ladakh, built in the same style and about the same time as the Potala Palace. Leh is at an altitude of 3524 metres (11,562 ft), and connects via National Highway 1D to Srinagar in the southwest and to Manali in the south via Leh-Manali Highway. Leh was an important stopover on trade routes along the Indus Valley between Tibet to the east, Kashmir to the west and also between India and China for centuries. The main goods carried were salt, grain, pashm or cashmere wool, charas or cannabis resin from the Tarim Basin, indigo, silk yarn and Banaras brocade.
Mountains dominate the landscape around the Leh as it is at an altitude of 3,500m. The principal access roads include the 434 km Srinagar-Leh highway which connects Leh with Srinagar and the 473 km Leh-Manali Highway which connects Manali with Leh. Both roads are open only on a seasonal basis. Although the access roads from Srinagar and Manali are often blocked by snow in winter, the local roads in the Indus Valley usually remain open due to the low level of precipitation and snowfall. Leh has a cold desert climate with long, harsh winters from October to early March, with minimum temperatures well below freezing for most of the winter. The city gets occasional snowfall during winter. The weather in the remaining months is generally fine and warm during the day. Leh is located at an average elevation of about 3500 metres, which means that only one crop a year can be grown there, while two can be grown at Khalatse. By the time crops are being sown at Leh in late May, they are already half-grown at Khalatse.
Unlike other districts of the State, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) also governs the administration in Leh. The Deputy Commissioner, Leh also holds the power of Chief Executive Officer LAHDC. The Chief Executive Councilor heads and chairs this council. Ladakh receives very large numbers of tourists for its size. In 2010, 77,800 tourists arrived in Leh. Numbers of visitors have swelled rapidly in recent years, increasing 77% in the 5 years to 2010. This growth is largely accounted for by larger numbers of trips by domestic Indian travelers.
Ladakh is a region of India in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and lies between the Kunlun mountain range in the north and the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir. It is also known as the Land of High Passes. Ladakh is the highest plateau of state of Kashmir with much of it being over 3,000 m (9,800 ft). It spans the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges and the upper Indus River valley. Ladakh district was a district of the Jammu and Kashmir state of India until 1 July 1979 when it was divided into Leh district and Kargil district. Each of these districts is governed by a Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, which is based on the pattern of the Darjeeling Gorkha Autonomous Hill Council. These councils were created as a compromise solution to the demands of Ladakhi people to make Leh a union territory.

Thiksey Monastery Vlog, Leh City, Jammu & Kashmir, India My Ladakh tour vlog #4
Thiksey monastery- Leh city has few of the best tourist attractions of ladakh and this is one of them. Located just few minutes’ drive (19 kms) from centre of the leh city in the village known as thiksey. This monastery is on height of aprox 12,000 fts above sea level on the hill just adjacent to the Indus river. You can see a superbly done Buddhist art, statue, stupa and painted walls. It has 50 ft Maitrey Buddha statue inside. Outside view of the monastery is really beautiful. It is the largest structure in middle of ladakh. It has Buddha statue, tara temple, assembly hall, lamokhang temple. I would strongly recommend to visit this monastery and for sure for them who love to know more and more about Buddhism.
Cham Dance at Spituk Monastery, Ladakh
Cham dance or the dance of Buddhist Lamas wearing elaborate masks is a treat to watch. This video was shot at Gustor Festival of Spituk Monastery located near Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir.
Buddhist Cham Dance is a ritual dance that is performed in various monasteries in the Himalayas – especially in regions like Ladakh. Every monastery follows its own calendar and celebrates its own Gustor festival. In fact, this is one of the key festivals of Ladakh. When I visited Ladakh in January, I attended the Gustor at Spituk Monastery that is very close to Leh.
It is a colorful dance performed by the lamas with strict rituals and rules – who are otherwise seen praying and living in monasteries located on hilltops. The Himalayan monasteries that are usually a quite spot come alive with these festivals. Dressed in colorful bright elaborate costumes lamas move rhythmically with the live music.
Word Cham comes from hand gestures or mudras that are used extensively in these dances. Hand gestures carry a lot of meaning along with the costume and the symbols carried in hand. For example, a sword is meant to cut off ignorance.

With Storma two days Gustor ceremony ends ..
Thiksey Monastery - Leh, Ladakh, India
FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM: @djtally
Thiksey Gompa is one of the biggest monasteries in central Ladakh and is famous for the Maitreya temple which houses a 49 foot Maitreya statue built to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to this monastery in 1970. It is the largest of the Maitreya statues found in Ladakh.
Another feature of the monastery worth mentioning are the colourful religious murals painted across its walls. Intricate depictions of Mandalas and wrathful deities relating to Tantric Buddhism are on display.

Thiksey Gompa - Monasteries of Ladakh
Idea and Creation:
Thiksay Gonpa, 22 Km from Leh is the most beautiful of all monasteries in Ladakh, belongs to the Gelukpa order. The Gonpa was first build at Stakmo by Changsem Sherab Zangpo of Stod. Later the nephew of Sherab Zangpo, Spon Paldan Sherab, founded the Thiksay Gonpa on a hill top to north of Indus river in 1430 AD. There are sacred shrines and many precious objects to be seen there. Two hundredfifty monks are in residence. The successive reincarnations of the Skyabsje Khanpo Rinpoche act as incumbents of the monastery. Sacred dances are held at the time of the Gustor the annual festival, which is performed every year from the 17th to 19th day of the 9th month of Tibetan Calendar. Although there was a very large temple built in ancient times at Thiksay by Rinchen Zangpo, the Translator, now it is in ruins. What remains of the building and walls can be seen at the site of the temple which was called Lakhang Nyerma and which was dedicated to the goddess Dorje Chenmo
