Amazing Split Apple Rock, Abel Tasman National Park Half Day Cruise, NZ South Island Roadtrip 4K
This video is about my trip to Abel Tasman National Park on South Island, New Zealand in Feb, 2016. The park is a wilderness reserve at the north end of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for the Abel Tasman Coast Track, a long trail winding over beaches and across ridges between Marahau in the south and Wainui in the north. The headland at Separation Point is home to New Zealand fur seal colonies. Little blue penguins, bottlenose dolphins and seals inhabit the Tonga Island Marine Reserve. You can also see the amazing Split Apple Rock on the cruise.

We visited Split Apple Rock near the Abel Tasman National Park. It wasn't a tough hike (or track), but we made the mistake of going to the other side during low tide.

SAYING GOODBYE TO THE VAN IN NZ - Kaiteriteri & Split Apple Rock | Vlog #21
After having some bad luck over the last few days with the weather, the sun finally came out and we were in very good spirits. We had a long drive ahead from Franz Josef up the west coast via the beautiful town of Hokitika, towards Nelson at the tip of the South Island. Upon arriving at our best campsite yet, we headed down to the beach where we were met with stunning sand dunes while we relaxed after a long days drive.
The next day we headed off towards Abel Tasman National Park - little did we know we would find the most beautiful beach there and not actually make it to the park! Kaiteriteri was exactly what we needed, as we sat on the beach and decided to take some sea kayaks around the coast and settling on a quiet beach beside the famous Split Apple Rock. The evening that followed involved yet more wine on our beautiful beach watching the sunset around the clouds.
Our final days in the van we didn't film much, but we made our way back up to Auckland via Mount Taranaki and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. The last three weeks had flown by and when it came to giving the van back we were genuinely quite upset! We had made our decision to settle in Queenstown and were to fly down there in two days time.

Split Apple Rock | Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand
Split Apple Rock is a geological rock formation, Located in the turquoise hues of the Tasman Sea in Abel Tasman National Park on the South Island of New Zealand, sits the unique rock formation known as Split Apple Rock. Made of granite, it is in the shape of an apple which has been cut in half. It is a popular tourist attraction in the waters of the Tasman Sea approximately 50 metres off the coast between Kaiteriteri and Marahau. Abel Tasman is the smallest of national parks throughout New Zealand covering an area of approximately 22,530 hectares. A beautiful place to explore full of stunning beaches, granite cliffs, native forests and breathtaking scenery with a mild climate making it an excellent place to visit any time throughout the year.
The rock sits in shallow water at low tide and is accessible by wading. It is also a point of interest for the many tourist boats and pleasure craft which operate along the shores of the Abel Tasman National Park. The cleft to produce two sides of the 'apple' was a natural occurrence. It is unknown when this happened and therefore the cleaving of the rock has attracted mythological explanations. A beautiful place to explore full of stunning beaches, granite cliffs, native forests and breathtaking scenery with a mild climate making it an excellent place to visit any time throughout the year.
