Exploring the 120 Year Old FISH MARKET and GREEN MARKET in Split!
Life in Split would be incomplete without the amazing Fish and Green Farmers Markets that surround the Diocletian's Palace. Check out the fresh finds!
Fish Market:
Alright guys as some of you might have already guessed from our previous videos, Raam and I love exploring markets, especially local fresh markets and now we are actually standing outside the biggest Fish Market in Split. It is absolutely vibrant, bustling and it opens around 6.30 AM in the morning and closes around 2 PM. The very cool thing is that around noon-ish the prices significantly drop. This market is actually 120 years old, you find around 50 different varieties of fish, and you know whats really cool? Unlike any other fish market in the world where you will find a ton of flies and what not, here you actually do not have that problem. The only fish market in the world. The reason is because there are sulphur springs beneath the ground. So it keeps the flies away. As well as that one really interesting fact is that there is a guy dedicated to cleaning the fish and filleting it for only around 2 US dollars, around 1.5 Euros. Super amazing. Let’s go explore!
Green Farmers Market:
Okay guys we’ve just finished checking out the fish market and we’ve walked over to the other side of the Diocletian’s Palace to check out the Green Farmers Market. You’re going to be absolutely amazed by the friendly faces, the vibrant atmosphere and most importantly : the variety! Let’s check it out.

Split, a town on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, is known for its beaches and the fortresslike complex at its center, Diocletian's Palace, erected by the Roman emperor in the 4th century. Once home to thousands, its sprawling remains include more than 200 buildings. Within its white stone walls and under its courtyards are a cathedral and numerous shops, bars, cafes, hotels and houses.
Croatia is an Eastern European country with a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Encompassing more than a thousand islands, it's also crossed by the Dinaric Alps. Its inland capital, Zagreb, is distinguished by its medieval Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and diverse museums. The major coastal city Dubrovnik has massive 16th-century walls encircling an Old Town with Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

Split In Your Pocket - Fish Market (Ribarnica)
Split In Your Pocket editor Kristina Kovac discovers the Ribarnica, Split's colourful fish market. What you can do is check out the hustle and bustle of weighing, cutting, haggling and trading that has been going on at this site since the fish market moved from its original location in the south-eastern part of the palace complex in 1843. The interesting smells emanating from the fish market might be compounded with another distinctive odor wafting through the air, that of sulphur. There's a sulphur spa nearby whose smell frequently mingles with the smell of fish, creating a truly interesting amalgamation of aromas.

The fish market has all the types of fish you could image. The smell is fairly thick but that's the way its always been in fish markets. = ) The walk way is really neat. I will go back in again in the evening so you can see what its like at night. The lights are great. = )
From Wikipedia
Split (Croatian pronunciation: [splît] (listen); see other names) is the second-largest city of Croatia and the largest city of the region of Dalmatia, with about 200,000 people living in its urban area. It lies on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea and is spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings. An intraregional transport hub and popular tourist destination, the city is linked to the Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula.
Home to Diocletian's Palace, built for the Roman emperor in AD 305, the city was founded as the Greek colony of Aspálathos (Aσπάλαθος) in the 3rd or 2nd century BC. It became a prominent settlement around 650 when it succeeded the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, Salona. After the Sack of Salona by the Avars and Slavs, the fortified Palace of Diocletian was settled by the Roman refugees. Split became a Byzantine city, to later gradually drift into the sphere of the Republic of Venice and the Kingdom of Croatia, with the Byzantines retaining nominal suzerainty. For much of the High and Late Middle Ages, Split enjoyed autonomy as a free city, caught in the middle of a struggle between Venice and the King of Hungary for control over the Dalmatian cities.
Venice eventually prevailed and during the early modern period Split remained a Venetian city, a heavily fortified outpost surrounded by Ottoman territory. Its hinterland was won from the Ottomans in the Morean War of 1699, and in 1797, as Venice fell to Napoleon, the Treaty of Campo Formio rendered the city to the Habsburg Monarchy. In 1805, the Peace of Pressburg added it to the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and in 1806 it was included in the French Empire, becoming part of the Illyrian Provinces in 1809. After being occupied in 1813, it was eventually granted to the Austrian Empire following the Congress of Vienna, where the city remained a part of the Austrian Kingdom of Dalmatia until the fall of Austria-Hungary in 1918 and the formation of Yugoslavia. In World War II, the city was annexed by Italy, then liberated by the Partisans after the Italian capitulation in 1943. It was then re-occupied by Germany, which granted it to its puppet Independent State of Croatia. The city was liberated again by the Partisans in 1944, and was included in the post-war Socialist Yugoslavia, as part of its republic of Croatia. In 1991, Croatia seceded from Yugoslavia amid the Croatian War of Independence.

The majority of journalists around the world have chosen to develop their subject on controversial and sensational themes: violence, war, crime. But all these facts represent only 1% of our world and its inhabitants, forgetting the remaining 99% of which we never speak.
I chose to visit every country on the planet and film them to present them in High Definition format but in a raw way, without music, without comment. Simply, reality in all its truth. Thus, you will be able to make your own idea of the world in which you live.
Currently, I have already visited nearly 170 countries and my world tour continues thanks to you who follow me.
