Split Rock Lighthouse State Park + Eagle Mountain (MN Highest Elev.)
Split Rock Lighthouse Stae Park is a quintessential North Shore destination. Split Rock Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouse in the United States. Once you have witnessed the beauty of this landmark with Lake Superior as its backdrop, you will fall under the spell that has enchanted many visitors.
Eagle Mountain is a must-see location. The first two miles of the trail are very moderate, with only the last 1/3 of the hike being more challenging and uphill, but the panoramic view is well worth the effort.

Exploding Waves on Lake Superior: Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
Days of strong winds whipped Lake Superior into a frenzy. Naturally I headed up the North Shore for a day of wild, windy, and wet hiking and photography. As I drove Scenic Hwy 61 through heavy downpours and gusting winds, my anticipation grew each time the shoreline and crashing waves were visible. The waves were exploding out of the Great Lake, crashing into the rugged shoreline, and launching spray far into the air. These may look like ocean scenes, but this is the Great Lake Superior. Words cannot adequately express the humbling feeling of standing on these rugged shores, witnessing the power and grace of this Great Lake. Please share this video with folks who appreciate the power and moods of Lake Superior.
This compilation includes footage captured at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park on Monday, April 25, 2016. The first segments include the iconic lighthouse, followed by Ellingsen Island, and then massive exploding waves along the shore of Split Rock Point. All footage is shown at actual speed. The region was sandwiched between high pressure to the North and low pressure to the South, which drove strong, sustained winds down Lake Superior for several days. The wind muff (dead cat) on the microphone was no match for these winds. The temperature was around 35°F (2°C) and winds ranged from 25 to more than 40 mph (40-64 kph), gusting near 60 mph (96 kph). Wave heights were 10-15 feet (3-5m), but the exploding waves and spray exceeded 100 feet (30m). Although conditions were challenging, the experience was exhilarating.
I have enjoyed the lake's crashing waves from various locations over the years, but had not experienced waves this explosive at Tettegouche or Split Rock. Having filmed the waves of many nor'easters while living in Rhode Island years ago, this looked more like an ocean than a lake. The waves relentlessly exploded as they came ashore. It was spectacular!
We rarely have blooper reels from a shoot, but this day produced a couple -- a camera and tripod being blown over by a sudden gust (and quickly caught), and my reaction to unanticipated rogue wave spray. They add to the memorable experience of documenting Lake Superior's extreme moods. Perhaps Seinfeld's George Costanza said it best, The sea was angry that day, my friends! We hope you enjoy this glimpse of a memorable day along the shores of the great Gitche Gumee. ~Dawn

Living Quarters / Homes at Split Rock Lighthouse
Take a tour through the living quarters at the Split Rock Lighthouse, located in the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park in Two Harbors, MN.
Three identical homes were built for the lighthouse keepers. There was a head keeper and two assistants. The three homes were built identical because there was not enough time to design and build different styles. Each home also had it's own storage shed.
For most of the time the Split Rock Lighthouse was in operation there were no roads. The families would arrive by ship. A ship would come by every so often with more supplies for the lighthouse and food.
