Decline in Florida football leaves high schools struggling to field teams
In Florida, football is king and Tampa Bay has been home to powerhouse programs pumping out top talent, but the I-Team found a significant drop in player participation is leaving some schools struggling to field a team. Story:
US Army Hard Hat Divers Operate on Bottom of Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam - March 17, 1969
Divers - March 17, 1969. From the Michael Sheets Collection of the Vietnam Center and Archive at Texas Tech University.
U. S. Army Hard Hat Divers Operate on Bottom of Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam (Official Department of Defense motion picture film by the U. S. Army under the direction of the MACV Office of Information. Photography by SP6 Sylvia & PH2 Zebrowski: Sound by Lt. Sheets.) Some soldiers in the United States Army, unlike their rifle-carrying brothers, have their principal activity in the water. These are the Army divers, well-schooled in all types of diving apparatus from Scuba to Hard-Hat. The Army Transportation Corps' Marine Maintenance Activity in South Vietnam calls on its Deep Sea Diving Section frequently for maintenance and repair of harbor facilities, vessels and floating craft, and salvage work. This diver, in a recent repair mission at Cam Ranh Bay, used a hard hat rig, allowing him to work at a depth of 120 feet. Preparing the diver for the dive is a complicated task requiring highly proficient tenders. In six minutes the tenders can suit up a man and have him ready to go over the side. When he is ready to go, he is carrying about two hundred pounds, including breastplate and helmet, forty-pound shoes, and 84-pound belt, plus air hose and lifeline. Once he's on the bottom, the diver and diving master are in constant communication. The diver moves up to his position, repairs the fuel line, then signals he is ready to come up. When his mission is completed, he increases his air flow, and the increased buoyancy allows him to float back to the surface.

Sponge Community Biocomplexity, Competition, and Functional Significance in the Florida Keys
Speaker: Knauss Fellow Marla Valentine, International Fisheries Science Specialist, Office of Science and Technology
Abstract: Sponges can have powerful effects on ecosystem processes in shallow, tropical marine ecosystems and are an integral component of the bentho-pelagic cycle of nutrients via filtering of dissolved and particulate organic matter from the water column. This research sought to experimentally establish the baseline effects of Florida Keys sponges and their complex microbiomes, at ecologically relevant biomass levels, on various shallow water ecosystem processes and functions. My work makes clear the implications of a reduction in the natural density and diversity of sponges in terms of significant alterations to the ecosystem’s natural biogeochemical cycles and bentho-pelagic linkages.
About the speaker: Marla Valentine graduated from Louisiana State University in 2013 with a Master of Science degree in Oceanography that centered on deep-sea benthic ecology using ROVs and AUVs following the Deepwater Horizon Incident. Marla defended her doctorate at Old Dominion University in 2018 focusing on biogeochemical cycling of nutrients in coastal marine ecosystems, specifically in the Florida Keys. Between degrees, Marla worked for several marine research labs from Alabama to Delaware to Alaska studying sharks alligators and finfish fisheries, acoustic and satellite telemetry, and aquatic invasive species.

From Jacksonville to Cahokia... Archaeology unearths Native American trading networks
Did you know that Cahokia was the largest population density north of Mexico until Philadelphia in the 1800's? And that trading reached far and wide, all the way to the Mill Cove complex in what is now now Jacksonville Florida? Join Dr. Keith Ashley, University of North Florida Assistant Professor of Archaeology as he shares recent findings unearthed from Northeast Florida in a fascinating tale that can only be told through the intersections of meticulous digging, chemical and physical analyses, history, and collaborative top-notch sleuthing.

SUMMARY
=======
Epiphany ( i-PIF-ə-nee), also Theophany, Denha, Little Christmas, or Three Kings' Day, is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ. In Western Christianity, the feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles. Moreover, the feast of the Epiphany, in some Western Christian denominations, also initiates the liturgical season of Epiphanytide. Eastern Christians, on the other hand, commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God. Qasr el Yahud in the West Bank, and Al-Maghtas in Jordan on the east bank, is considered to be the original site of the baptism of Jesus and the ministry of John the Baptist.The traditional date for the feast is January 6. However, since 1970, the celebration is held in some countries on the Sunday after January 1. Eastern Churches following the Julian calendar observe the feast on what for most countries is January 19 because of the 13-day difference today between that calendar and the generally used Gregorian calendar. In many Western Christian Churches, the eve of the feast is celebrated as Twelfth Night. The Monday after Epiphany is known as Plough Monday.Popular Epiphany customs include Epiphany singing, chalking the door, having one's house blessed, consuming Three Kings Cake, winter swimming, as well as attending church services. It is customary for Christians in many localities to remove their Christmas decorations on Epiphany Eve (Twelfth Night), although those in other Christian countries historically remove them on Candlemas, the conclusion of Epiphanytide. According to the first tradition, those who fail to remember to remove their Christmas decorations on Epiphany Eve must leave them untouched until Candlemas, the second opportunity to remove them; failure to observe this custom is considered inauspicious.
Dr. Dennis HANISAK 01 22 14 : Indian River Lagoon Observatory
The Indian River Lagoon Observatory (IRLO) was initiated to investigate ecological relationships in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and how they are impacted by natural and human-induced stressors. An important component of IRLO is the development of a network of advanced observing stations in the Lagoon. Recently deployed Land/Ocean Biogeochemical Observatory (LOBO) units provide real-time, high-accuracy and high-resolution water quality data through an interactive website. This enables all of us -- scientists, managers, educators, students, and the public -- to better observe long-term ecosystem changes and those driven by events such as freshwater discharges, algal blooms, storms, and droughts.
This lecture will first explore what is water quality, a term that includes a number of physical, chemical, and biological components. Collectively they impact initially the base of the food web (seagrasses and algae) and ultimately the diversity and productivity of the entire ecosystem. Introducing this LOBO network into the IRL will provide scientists of various disciplines from many organizations reliable, continuous observatory data to better quantify and model relationships between environmental factors and biological processes in the IRL.
