Spotted Lake Osoyoos Canada
The Magic of Spotted Lake in Osoyoos
Spotted Lake is a small lake rich in a variety of minerals, including calcium, sodium sulphates and magnesium sulphate. During the hot summer months, much of the water in the lake evaporates, leaving concentrations of these minerals that form the spots visible in the lake. Throughout the summer, the spots shift in size and colour as the minerals within each change with further evaporation. Colours ranging from blue to green to yellow appear, depending on the mineral makeup of each individual spot.
Spotted Lake is known to the First Nations People of the Osoyoos area as Kliluk, and it is a sacred site that has been considered a revered place of healing for centuries. The belief is that each of the different circles holds its own unique medicinal and healing properties. The land surrounding the lake was privately owned for 40 years, but in 2001 the federal government acquired it for the benefit and uses of the Okanagan Nation. This ensures that this historically important land can be protected from development, so that future generations of the Okanagan Nation will continue to benefit, as did their ancestors. It also ensures that future visitors will still be able to view this incredible natural phenomenon. If you are interested in learning more about the Okanagan First Nation, The Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre is a great place to explore and learn more about their rich cultural history.
Osoyoos is known for its warm summers, gorgeous lakes, unique desert wildlife and great outdoor activities. It’s home to the Nk’Mip Desert, Canada’s only true desert environment, and the unique natural formation of Spotted Lake – a huge draw for visitors to the area. This mineral lake is located along Highway 3, northwest of Osoyoos in the Eastern Similkameen Valley.

Spotted Lake in Osoyoos Canada | Our Nature | Hungama Kids
In this series of 'Our Nature', today we will be talking about another jaw-dropping natural phenomenon that will surprise you and thrill you. Let’s take you all to the South Okanagan Grasslands in British Columbia, Canada and show you the natural wonder of Spotted Lake.
Yes, talking a close look at it will make you wonder whether this has been artificially created on computer software! But the fact is that it has been designed by Nature. Its called Klikuk by the locals and this Lake has long held a reputation for being a mystical lake with healing powers. Also, some say that each of the different circles holds its own unique medicinal and healing properties.
However, Science has a different take to it. This lake contains a bunch of highly concentrated minerals including calcium, sodium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate & when the water on the lake evaporates in the summer, all these minerals remain and crystallize to form the otherworldly polka dot pattern. The researchers also found that these spots shift in size and color throughout the summer as the minerals within each change with further evaporation.
Isn't the world of Nature mystical!!. For more such info-taining videos do subscribe to our channel. Do like and share this video.

Spotted Lake Naming and history:
Originally known to the First Nations of the Okanagan Valley as Kliluk, Spotted Lake was for centuries and remains revered as a sacred site thought to provide therapeutic waters.[2]During World War I, the minerals of Spotted Lake were used in manufacturing ammunition.
Later, the area came under the control of the Ernest Smith Family for a term of about 40 years. In 1979, Smith attempted to create interest in a spa at the lake. The First Nations responded with an effort to buy the lake, then in October 2001, struck a deal by purchasing 22 hectares of land for a total of $720,000, and contributed about 20% of the cost. The Indian Affairs Department paid the

Spotted Lake also known as Kliluk lake, is one of the major natural attractions in Canada. It is located about 100 km. east of Vancouver, close to the border with the United States and owes its peculiar aspect to the high concentration of many different materials such as magnesium sulfate, calcium and sodium sulphate minerals. But it is in summer when the sun evaporates water volume of the lake, where it offers its most spectacular image.
A lake sacred to the Native Americans, composed of 365 separate pools of highly concentrated minerals. This strangely-patterned body of water is located between the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys in British Columbia's desert. The lake water is converted into steam leaving these enormous large blobs of minerals. Depending on the mineral composition, these spots may be white, pale ocher and even yellow, green or blue. The mineral crystallizes forming natural walkways that make it easier to access these strange formations.
Native Okanagan Valley Indians call this place Kliluk, the sacred lake. Due to the great cultural significance to this town, the commercial and tourist exploitation of Spotted Lake has generated enormous controversy. Fortunately or unfortunately, therapeutic water quality is known for thousands of years (the Indians still use their sludge to heal pain and manufacture ointments). According to tradition, in a war between tribes a truce was agreed for warriors from both sides could go to the lake to heal from their wounds. Today the lake is surrounded by a fence to prevent people from accessing the lake. An insufficient measure because everyone jumps. If you visit Spotted Lake and want to enjoy the show respect to native Indians and their beliefs, you can get great views at the foot of the road.

Spotted Lake is richly concentrated with various minerals. It contains dense deposits of magnesium sulfate, calcium and sodium sulphates. It also contains high concentrations of eight other minerals and lower amounts of silver and titanium.
Most of the water in the lake evaporates over the summer, revealing colorful mineral deposits. Large “spots” on the lake appear and are colored according to the mineral composition and seasonal amount of precipitation.Magnesium sulfate, which crystallizes in the summer, is a major contributor to spot color. In the summer, remaining minerals in the lake harden to form natural “walkways” around and between the spots.
