Chapel and Spreuer Bridge and the River Reuss, Lucerne
The 160km (100 mile) long River Reuss, a tributary of the Aare River, flows through Lake Lucerne and provides a charming setting for the Swiss city of the same name. Lucerne has two traditional covered footbridges – Chapel Bridge, and this one, Spreuer Bridge. The film shows the city in the vicinity of the bridge, an area of outdoor restaurants and cafes alongside the river, with glimpses of mountains in the background. The inside of Spreuer Bridge is featured with paintings in the apex of the roof, which can also be seen at Chapel Bridge. Created in the 17th century, the 45 surviving paintings form a “totentanz” cycle or “Dance of Death” – a reminder of Man’s mortality.

Kapellbrücke
The oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe stretches across Lake Lucerne, with its structure dating back to the 14th century. The interior of the Kapellbrücke contains artwork from the 17th century depicting important events in Swiss history. Much of the bridge is a modern reconstruction after it was destroyed by a fire in the 90s.

A postcard picturesque city, Lucerne has that German, French and English touch. I checked out this city on my European Discovery Tour with Contiki in October 2016

The Kapellbrücke (literally, Chapel Bridge) is a covered wooden footbridge spanning the River Reuss diagonally in the city of Lucerne in central Switzerland. Named after the nearby St. Peter's Chapel, the bridge is unique in containing a number of interior paintings dating back to the 17th century, although many of them were destroyed along with a larger part of the centuries-old bridge in a 1993 fire. Subsequently restored, the Kapellbrücke is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe, as well as the world's oldest surviving truss bridge. It serves as the city's symbol and as one of Switzerland's main tourist attractions.-Wikipedia

Lucerne (Switzerland) Travel - Chapel Bridge
Said to be the longest covered bridge, Chapel Bridge also depicts Lucerne's history.
Behind me is the Lucerne Kapellbrucke or Chapel Bridge, probably one of the most photographed attractions of Switzerland. Said to be the longest covered bridge in the world, it was originally built in 14th century to act as part of the protective wall around the city. Sadly, a large part of it was burned in a fire in the early 90's but most of it has since been intricately restored. What is really interesting about the bridge is that it is wooden ceiling has various triangular-shaped paintings.
Many of the paintings were destroyed in the fire as well. Some have been repainted but many are lost forever. The main attraction at the end of the bridge is this octagonal tower called The Water Tower. It has served various purposes including that of an archive, treasury, prison, and a torture chamber. And, of course, we are in Lucerne so great views are virtually guaranteed. I am Nadia Migdal showing you Lucerne.
