Spurlock Mummy Part 1
In 1989 the World Heritage Museum (now known as the Spurlock Museum) at the University of Illinois acquired an Egyptian mummy. In 1990, scientists took the mummy to Carle Hospital for CT scans to analyze the mummy without physically disturbing the remains.
In 2011, over two decades later, tehcnology and imaging are more advanced, warranting a return trip to the hospital for the mummy.
A team of scientists led by Dr. Sarah Wisseman of ISAS' Ancient Technologies and Archaeological Materials Program and staff from the Spurlock Museum arranged for the mummy to have another CT scan at Carle Hospital with the original scientists from 1990.

The Meaning of Ramanujan and His Lost Notebook
George E. Andrews
Evan Pugh Professor of Mathematics, The Pennsylvania State University
George Andrews will describe the brief life of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the self-taught Indian mathematical genius whose legacy includes many formulas that were new and surprising and that took many years for others to prove. Andrews will use elementary arithmetic to illustrate Ramanujan's mathematical work. He will also discuss the philosophical issue of whether mathematical truth transcends culture, incorporating ideas of the late Edward Shils who illustrated Ramanujan's work to support the notion of the universal validity of science.

Cosmopolitan, Native, Vernacular: Toward a More Inclusive American Art History; 4/19/2007
Janet Catherine Berlo, George A. Miller Endowment Professor and Distinguished Mellon Scholar in Residence, UIUC and Department of Art and Art History, University of Rochester
While the study of American art has come a long way in terms of embracing diverse realms, Janet Berlo suggests how the study of more works of vernacular and Native American art (historic as well as modern) can help American art history become a more global and inclusive enterprise. Many of the examples will be drawn from the forthcoming American art survey textbook American Encounters(2007), for which the speaker is one of the lead authors.
This talk is in conjunction with the State-of-the-Art Mellon Conference, American Art Histories and Transdisciplinary Practices.

Why is Europe, not China or India, the Second Superpower of the 21st Century?
Andrew Moravcsik
Department of Politics and International Affairs, Princeton University
It is fashionable to view the 21st-century global system as dominated by US, China and India. Andrew Moravcsik disagrees, arguing that Europe is becoming the Quiet Superpower. Indeed, the European Union has emerged as an ambitious and successful international organization, pioneering practices far in advance of anything viewed elsewhere.
This presentation is given in celebration of the inauguration of the University of Illinois Master of Arts in European Union Studies.

Augmented reality, mobile computing, and the museum of the future | Paul Marty | TEDxFSU
Paul F. Marty is an Associate Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies within the College of Communication of Information at Florida State University. He has a background in ancient history and computer science engineering, and his Ph.D. is from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 1996 to 2002, he was Director of Information Technology at the Spurlock Museum. Dr. Marty's research and teaching interests include museum informatics, information behavior, and user-centered design. He specializes in the study of museums as sociotechnical systems, and is particularly interested in the social implications of introducing new technologies into the museum environment. His current research focuses on the evolution of sociotechnical systems and collaborative work practices, digital convergence and the evolving roles of information professionals, and involving users in the co-construction of digital knowledge.
About the Talk:
New advances in ubiquitous computing technologies have revolutionized the ability of museums and other cultural heritage organizations to interact with their visitors. Anytime, anywhere access to digital information resources offers new avenues for building stronger relationships and provides unprecedented opportunities for learning and exploration, in the museum and online. These changes have profoundly affected how individuals interact with digital and physical museum resources, and museum professionals have responded to these developments by shifting from a focus on the role of the visitor in the life of the museum, to the role of the museum in the life of the visitor. This talk explores how mobile computing and augmented reality technologies are changing the way we interact with 21st century museums in our everyday lives, and examines what the future holds for museums and their visitors.

What's New About the New Immigrants?
Nancy Foner
Department of Sociology, Hunter College, City University of New York
A hundred years ago a massive wave of immigration dramatically changed the United States. Today, a similar influx is again transforming the nation. In what ways is history being repeated? And what — and how much-- is different from the past? The talk will explore both parallels and contrasts between immigration then and now as well as ways that the legacy of the past has helped to shape the immigrant experience --and reaction to immigration--today.

=======
The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (also known as U of I, Illinois, or colloquially as the University of Illinois or UIUC) is a public research university in Illinois and the flagship institution of the University of Illinois System. Founded in 1867 as a land-grant institution, its campus is located in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana.
The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified as a R1 Doctoral Research University under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, which denotes the highest research activity. In fiscal year 2017, research expenditures at Illinois totaled $642 million. The campus library system possesses the second-largest university library in the United States by holdings after Harvard University. The university also hosts the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and is home to the fastest supercomputer on a university campus. The university contains 16 schools and colleges and offers more than 150 undergraduate and over 100 graduate programs of study. The university holds 651 buildings on 6,370 acres (2,578 ha) and its annual operating budget in 2016 was over $2 billion. The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign also operates a Research Park home to innovation centers for over 90 start-up companies and multinational corporations, including Abbott, AbbVie, Caterpillar, Capital One, Dow, State Farm, and Yahoo, among others. As of October 2018, 30 Nobel laureates, 2 Turing Award winners, and 1 Fields medalist have been affiliated with the university as alumni, faculty members, or researchers.
Searching for Unconventional Superconductors: A Quantum Map-Quest
Dale J Van Harlingen
CAS Professor of Physics
Superconductivity is one of the most remarkable and potentially useful phenomena ever discovered — the ability of a material to carry electrical current without any loss of energy by heating was an amazing and unexpected observation first made almost 100 years ago. The mysterious behavior of superconductors was finally explained 50 years ago by researchers at the University of Illinois, led by two-time Nobel Laureate John Bardeen.
However, in the last few decades several new classes of superconductors have been discovered that exhibit even more exotic properties and even greater potential for technological impact.? These unconventional superconductors are once again challenging our understanding of condensed matter physics and the quantum world and may revolutionize our lives through energy transmission, secure communication, medical imaging, and quantum computing.
In this talk, Professor Van Harlingen will describe the quest to characterize the extraordinary and puzzling properties of the new superconductors and zoom in to the quantum world that holds the key to understanding and exploiting them.
