Srebana Nature Reserve - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Srebana Nature Reserve is an interesting and important UNESCO World Heritage site in Bulgaria. As a nature reserve, it's an important resting stop for migratory birds, and a key point for bird nesting as well. Unfortunately for us, the viewing points weren't up to much so we saw basically no birds!

Srebarna Nature Reserve
The Srebarna Nature Reserve is so rich that many named it the other Danube Delta, which is much smaller but with a breathtaking biodiversity. It has an area of approx. 600 hectares and is located on one of the main bird migration routes. Here's why it hosts about 200 species of birds. Pelicans, egrets, white storks, or hawks live here in great numbers. They are joined by the 45 species of mammals, 22 species of amphibians and reptiles, 20 species of fish and over 300 species of plants, some of them a rarity in Europe. The lake has been called a natural reserve since 1948 for the abundance of plants, birds and animals to be protected.

Srebarna Biosphere Reserve
The Srebarna Nature Reserve is a freshwater lake adjacent to the Danube and extending over 600 ha. It is the breeding ground of almost 100 species of birds, many of which are rare or endangered. Some 80 other bird species migrate and seek refuge there every winter. Among the most interesting bird species are the Dalmatian pelican, the great egret, the night heron, the purple heron, the glossy ibis and the white spoonbill.

The Srebarna Nature Reserve (Природен резерват Сребърна, Priroden rezervat Srebarna) is a nature reserve in
northeastern Bulgaria (Southern Dobruja), near the village of the same name, 18 km west of Silistra and 2 km
south of the Danube. It comprises Lake Srebarna and its surroundings (extending over 600 ha) and is located on
the Via Pontica, a bird migration route between Europe and Africa.
There are several legends about the origin of the lake's name. The one is about a khan named Srebrist, who died
in the neighbourhood whilst engaging in an unequal battle with the Pechenegs. A second one tells about a boat
full of silver (srebro in Bulgarian) along the shores of the lake. According to a third one, which is regarded as
most plausible, the name comes from the silvery reflections on the lake's surface during full moon.
The freshwater lake's depth varies from 1 to 3 m.
There are hydrophyte species such as reed in and around the lake. The reserve is home to 139 plant species, 11 of
them are in danger of extinction outside the territory of Srebarna.
The natural habitat favours the growth of a wide variety of animal and plant species. 39 mammal, 21 reptile and
amphibian and 10 fish species inhabit the reserve. Of great interest are the 160 species of birds, 90 of which
nest and breed here. 'Sreburna' is a stopping place for many migratory birds and the best European colony with
over 200 Dalmatian pelicans. Present are Red-necked and Black-necked Grebes, Great and Pygmy Cormorants, Egrets,
Night Herons and a few Glossy Ibis and Spoonbill. Other breeders are Ferruginous Duck, Crakes and Marsh terns,
Roller, Bee-eater and Penduline Tit. The lake and the surrounding area are famous for the large numbers of
wintering geese, mainly White-fronted but also Greylag and Red-breasted Geese present.
The greatest treasure of Srebarna reserve is the nesting colony of Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus). There
is a lot of information about the breeding of Dalmatian Pelican in the reserve.
In the beggining of breeding period in 2008 the pelican colony settled on their tradition place (northern
reedbeds approximatly to the central open area). The first pelicans arrived in the reserve in 06.02.2008. There
were 70-80 pairs. Unfortunatly in the middle of March the colony again was attacked from the wild boars and this
time the negative effect was very strong - they eat all the eggs in the colony. In the result the birds moved in
the sothern reedbeds of the lake and established a little colony there - 30-40 pairs. In the end of June the
reserves` guards found that the pelicans again abandoned the colony but in the end of breeding period the guards
of the reserve counted around 30-40 young pelicans in the lake.
The area was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1948.
The Srebarna Lake was designated as a Monument of World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1983), UNESCO biosphere
reserve (1977), Ramsar site (1975) and Important Bird Area (1990) because of its extremely rich ornithofauna and
mainly because of the breeding of globally threatened species Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Pygmy
Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus) and Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca).
This record was made in first half of September 2008.

Fishing heritage in Vetren and Srebarna
MEMOFISH - Memory and Future. Stories about the Danube Civilization
The swamps around Vetren and Srebarna create one of the oldest fishing communities on the Danube. Vasil Nikolov tells about the fish burbot, which disappeared for only a few years, and its long wait before that. Veliko Ivanov reveals the secret how a trap is thrown out. Memories from the past are shared by Dimitra Stoyanova and Enyo Stoyanov.
#MEMOFISH presents the natural beauty of Srebarna: nature reserve on the UNESCO world heritage list.
