14 ELEPHANTS assembled at TEMPLE FESTIVAL ???? || Thiruvangad Sree Rama Swami Temple
Along with a large population of wild elephants, Kerala has more than seven hundred domesticated elephants. Most of them are owned by temples and individuals. They are used for religious ceremonies in and around the temples, and some churches and mosques also, and a few elephants work at timber yards. As the State Animal, the elephant is featured on the emblem of the Government of Kerala state.
Almost all of the local festivals in Kerala include at least one elephant. Elephants carry the deity during annual festival processions and ceremonial circumnambulations in the Hindu temples. The temple elephants are decorated with gold plated caparisons (nettipattam), bells, and necklaces. People mounted on the elephants hold tinselled silk parasols (muttukuda) up high, swaying white tufts (vencamaram) and peacock feather fans (alavattam) to the rhythm of the orchestra.

The temple is truly ancient and brims with legends and has a hoary past spanning centuries. It is believed to be the oldest among the four main temples in Kerala dedicated to Lord Rama (other three being Thriprayaar, Kadalur and Thiruvilwamala). It houses exquisite, wooden sculptures which rank among the best in Kerala. The temple sits on nearly seven acres of land including the temple tank (“chira”) which measures about two and a half acres.
The main yearly festival (Vishu Mahotsavam) starts on the day of Meta Samkramam (last day of Malayalam month of Meenam) with the ceremonial flag-hoisting. Festival lasts eight days. On festival days, every evening, a ceremonial idol of Sri Rama (Perumaal) is taken on elephant back in a procession (“Ezhunnallethu”) around the temple in royal regalia and splendor along with flag-bearers, decorated silk umbrellas, and infantry soldiers with bows, arrows, swords and shields to the accompaniment of Panchavadyam and Pandimelam. After the ezhunnallethu, the idol is kept in the Kazhakappura in the northeast part of the chuttambalam, where on the last two days of the festival, a special ceremony called “Mothiram-Vechu-Thozhal” is held. This involves devotees placing a gold ring on a piece of banana leaf in front of the idol and praying for favors. This is reminiscent of Hanuman presenting Seetha’s “Anguleeyam” to Sri Rama. Performing this pooja is said to be very auspicious. On the sixth night of the festival, Pallivetta (ceremonial royal hunt) is held at Perumporkkalam (Perumkalam) to the east of the temple. This is indeed the place where Tipu Sultan had camped while attacking the temple. Aaratt (ritual immersion of the idol of the deity) is held at the temple tank. Chaakyaar- Kooth is held daily. Kathakali and Ottamthullal are also staged during the festival.“Pattathanam” is another important celebration on Thiruvonam day in the month of Makaram. This is believed to be the day when the deity was consecrated.

Panchari Melam in Thiruvangad Temple Thalassery | പഞ്ചാരിമേളം
Panchari Melam in Thiruvangad Temple Thalassery - Panchari Melam is a percussion ensemble, performed during temple festivals in Kerala, India. Panchari Melam (or, simply, panchari), is one of the major forms of chenda melam (ethnic drum ensemble), and is the best-known and most popular kshetram vadyam (temple percussion) genre. Panchari melam, comprising instruments like chenda, ilathalam, kombu and kuzhal, is performed during virtually every temple festival in central Kerala, where it is arguably presented in the most classical manner. Panchari, however, is also traditionally performed, with a touch of subtle regional difference, in north (Malabar) and south-central Kerala. Of late, its charm has led to its performance even in deep-south Kerala temples.
