The Wine Town of Sremski Karlovci, Serbia
►Read the blog:
In this episode, David takes us on a day trip 11 kilometers from Novi Sad, Serbia to the charming wine town of Sremski Karlovci in the Vojvodina Province. The best part about this place is that it's easy to explore by foot as you go from one wine tasting to another. There are several wineries and rakia producers here, many of which are family-owned and operated. The town has a long history in winemaking - Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius planted the first vines here in the year 273 A.D.
Without further ado, David starts on his wine-tastic journey through Sremski Karlovci, plus takes us to a great lookout point and a delicious cake shop.
First stop is the Benišek-Veselinović Wine Cellar and Matchbox Museum to taste some amazing fruit and nut-flavored rakias. Owner Yovanna cooked a traditional Serbian breakfast to accompany the rakia samplings, which you could reserve too for approximately 500 Serbian dinar ($5) per person. Buying a bottle to take home makes for a special and inexpensive memento (10 euro). Perhaps, like David, your favorite will be the walnut-flavored rakia. As you taste test, feel free to walk around and admire the hundreds of vintage matchboxes - a collection that Yovanna's stepmother started many years ago.
The second stop of the day is to the famous Beekeeping Museum and the Wine House Živanović (86b Mitropolita Stratimirovića Street, +381(0)21882849; +381(0)62521061) to sample delicious wines, organic honey and check out the onsite Beekeeping Museum. Of their many wines, the red Probus, white Tamjanika, and red Bermet varieties are David's top picks.
After working up a little buzz, David heads into the main square to taste traditional Kuglof cake - bundt cakes that originated in 17th century Germany. They make fantastic housewarming gifts and souvenirs (if you can refrain from eating the whole thing before you get home). The Kuglof cakes in Sremski Karlovci are made with the strong Bermet wine (17% alcohol). David enters Musej Geas Kuglof to see the Kuglof cake being made by local baker, Gia. A few simple ingredients, good quality chocolate and local Bermet wine combine to give Gia's Kuglof cake a delicate and rich flavor.
The best way to end a day in Sremski Karlovci is by heading up to the Panorama spot for a bird's eye view of the town and the Danube River. Remember if you would like to reserve a wine tasting at any of the wineries, you can do that by emailing them directly, or if you're in town, take a moment to stop into the Sremski Karlovci Municipal Tourist Organization (7 Branka Radicevica Street, Tel: +381 21 882 127, 883 855) located in the main square.

Enjoy the guided tour of town of Sremski Karlovci in Vojvodina, Serbia...
Sremski Karlovci (Сремски Карловци), is a town and municipality in Serbia, in the autonomous province of Vojvodina, situated on the bank of the river Danube, 8 kilometres (5 miles) from Novi Sad. The population in 2011 was 8,722. The town has traditionally been known as the seat of Serbian Orthodox Church in the Hapsburg Monarchy, as well as political and cultural capital of Serbian Vojvodina after the May Assembly and during the Revolution in 1848.
In Serbian, the town is known as Sremski Karlovci (Сремски Карловци), in Croatian as Srijemski Karlovci, in German as Karlowitz or Carlowitz, in Hungarian as Karlóca, in Polish as Karłowice, in Romanian as Carloviț and in Turkish as Karlofça.
In ancient times, a small Roman fortress existed at this location. The town was first mentioned in historical documents in 1308 with the name Karom. The fortress of Karom was built on the ruins of the ancient Roman one. Until 1521, the Karom was a possession of the Hungarian noble families, of which the most well known were Báthory and Morović.Turkish military commander Bali-beg conquered Karom in 1521, and in the next 170 years, the town was part of the Ottoman Empire. The Slavic name for the town - Karlovci, was first recorded in 1532/33. During the Ottoman rule, the town was mostly populated by Serbs, with the smaller part of population composed of Muslims. According to the Ottoman defterler from 1545, the population of Karlovci numbered 547 Christian (Serb) houses, thus it was the largest city with a Serb majority in the whole Ottoman Empire. The city also had three Orthodox churches and a monastery.
Between 1980 and 1989, Sremski Karlovci was one of the seven municipalities of Novi Sad City. Today, the municipality is not part of Novi Sad City, but a separate administrative unit of South Bačka District. Most recently, the government of Serbia announced its decision to move the Constitutional Court of Serbia to this town as part of the national strategy for decentralization. Furthermore, the government decided to make this move because of the historic importance of this town in Serbian history as well because of its relative proximity to the capital, Belgrade.

My 10km Walk From Novi Sad to Sremski Karlovci
My Saturday ritual continues! I love to get up early on Saturday mornings and get a good job in. This past Saturday, I decided i'd throw on some music and walk the 10kilometers to the beautiful town of Sremski Karlovci.
Exploring Sremski Karlovci town of wine, spirituality and culture |near Novi Sad and Belgrade Serbia
This video is about Sremski Karlovci, the town you can see when you are in Novi Sad or Belgrade or anywhere else near Vojvodina and Serbia. Sremski Karlovci is situated on the bank of the river Danube, 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Novi Sad. We start from Novi Sad, pass through Petrovaradin and explore the center of Sremski Karlovci, the Royal garden, the monastery and more.
In ancient times, a small Roman fortress existed at this location. The town itself was first mentioned in 1308, under the name of Karom. Its Serbian name, Karlovci was first recorded in 1532/3. The town has traditionally been known as the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Habsburg Monarchy, as well as the political and cultural capital of Serbian Vojvodina after the May Assembly and during the Revolution in 1848.
We start from Novi Sad, pass Petrovaradin old and new town and Petrovaradin fortress. In Sremski Karlovci we start from Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary monastery. The church of the Presentation, commonly called Upper Church due to its position on top of a smaller hill in town, was completed in 1764.
The second stop is the awesome Royal garden. The complex of the Royal Garden is situated in the town, 500 m away from the town center. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in our country. It consists of two levels: sports and recreational facilities are situated on the upper level and walking lanes in the lower one.
Then, we go to the center and the first building is Karlovci Theological Seminary. Orthodox Theological Seminary in Karlovci was founded in 1794, the second one in the world (Kievan Seminary being the first).
Patriarch's Court is one of the most monumental XIX-century buildings of Vojvodina. It was completed in 1895 and it served as the residence of the Patriarch of Karlovci, and later as the summer residence of the Patriarch of Serbia after the reunification of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1920. The Court today houses the Museum of Serbian Orthodox Church, and it is also the current residence of the Orthodox bishop of the Eparchy of Srem.
Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas dedicated to the Translation of Relics of Saint Nicholas (22 May), was erected in 1762. It is considered to be one of the masterpieces of Serbian baroque.
Located right next to the Orthodox Cathedral Church, the Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1768. Its portal is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of baroque portals in Serbia.
Karlovci High School is the oldest Serbian high school was founded in Karlovci in 1791. The building houses an impressive library with many books of great importance to the history of Serbs in Austria-Hungary.
The Magistrate of Sremski Karlovci (town hall) is one of the most historical buildings in town. It was completed in 1811 in the neo-classicist style, and for most of its history, it served as the seat of the Town and Municipal Assembly.
What you can buy? My suggestion is Bermet wine as here is the only place on the Earth where Bermet wine is produced. It is a traditional desert aromatic wine that has been produced in this region for centuries. At first, it was used as a remedy. However, with the passing of time, due to its exceptional taste, it was made for pleasure as well. Vienna Court was buying Bermet from the local winemakers in advance and at high prices. From the middle of the 19th century, it was being exported regularly, even to America. Bermet is a sweet red wine with a high percentage of alcohol (16% - 17%). However, it is the superb taste that distinguishes this wine from the others. The taste is derived from medicinal herbs, spices and dry fruit that are added to it during the process of production. The Ministry of Agriculture declared Bermet from Fruška Gora as a new protected brand of Serbia in 2007.

Five Foreigners Exploring Sremski Karlovci, Serbia
One of my buddies is a Norwegian med student here in Novi Sad. He called me and asked me to join him, his brother, brother's girlfriend and a Serb from Wales on their trip to Sremski Karlovci. I had heard all about the little town of nearly 10k, but hadn't taken the time to visit yet. I'm so happy that I did. I will now rank it in the top three most beautiful cities/towns in Serbia.
Sremski Karlovci - Srbija u kadru
Sremski Karlovci, grad pun historije

Not only Sremski Karlovci was the centre of art, politics, religion and culture but nowadays its youth is trying to make it centre of ecology in Vojvodina. I met Sara who is from this little town, she kindly showed me around from the main square up to the Peace Chapel passing by the town's own Eco-Center where she is actively involved.

Serbia at Its Finest: Food and Live Music in Sremski Karlovci
Hotel Dunav is where we decided to eat on our little excursion to Sremski Karlovci. We were seated right along the Danube River on the outdoor terrace. We had some wine, cheese/meat tray, two platters of mixed meats, desserts and live music. What a great way to spend a Sunday.
