Shree Chandreshwar Bhootnath Temple, Goa
Located at Paroda Parvat. A narrow driveway up the hill reaches a table spot from where about 400 steps take you to the temple on the hill top. Quite an isolated place as it looks most of time thru the year; Shivratri of each month and annual Mahashivratri witness a heavy rush.

Location
The ancient Chandreshwar Temple, also known as the Chandranath Temple is situated on the road to Quepem, about 14 Km from Margao.
It is located on the Chandranath Parvat, a heavily wooded hill on Paroda Parvat
One can reach the Chandreshwar Temple by the granite stone steps from the hill’s base or by a drive up over a metalled road.
The Temple is situated 350 meters above the Chandranath Hill.
And, the whole place is strangely infested by small rock crabs.
Bhootnath
Next door, a smaller temple is dedicated to Chandreshwar’s attendant deity, Bhootnath who is the Lord of ghosts.
The temple’s chariot is well known for the wood carvings.
A procession of the deity is held every Monday evening, wherein food is offered to the devotees.
History
According to an ancient Sanskrit inscription, the Temple has stood on this magical spot for nearly 2500 years.
However, the present building, dedicated to Shiva, is comparatively modern, dating from the late 1600s.
The only part of the shrine that is definitely a vestige of the Vedic age is its cavernous inner sanctum, hollowed from a hug back boulder, around which the site’s 17th domed sanctuary tower.
The Temple is associated with the Bhoja dynasty, who were the rulers of the region till the 8th century.
Description
Pilgrims arrive at the main entrance for darshan or ritual viewing of God.
A wild-eyed golden Chandreshwar deity, Shiva as “Lord of Moon”, stares out from an ornately decorated sanctum, wrapped in brocaded silk.
The presiding deity of the temple is Shri Bhootnath or Chandreshwar whom the Bhoja Kings regarded as the titular deity.
The Bhoja Kings ruled South Goa before the Portuguese, till the middle of the 8th century. And, in fact, they named their capital Chandrapur after the deity.
In the Shree Chandranath Temple at Quepem in Goa, you will find the Shiva Lingaa carved out from the rock.
The most surprising and most amazing fact is that on full moon night, water oozes out from the Shiva Lingaa whenever moonlight falls on it and the temple is so designed that Shiva Lingaa receives moonlight on every moon.
Festivals
The main festival here is the five-day Hanuman Jayanti, along with Dussehra and Mahashivaratri.
Parvathi and elephant-headed Ganesh respectively, sculpted in stone – are housed in small niches to the rear of the shrine.
The passage, which has to be walked around in clockwise direction, hugs the base of the boulder that forms the temple’s heart.
A small Nandi Bull lies among there from which the view west out to sea and south across the Assolna estuary to the Cabo De Rama headland can be seen.

Rumdamol Temple Controversy
Lack of co-ordination between government departments led to the Rumdamol temple imbroglio as the Deputy Director of Panchayat issued the directive to the Rumdamol Davorlim panchayat to take action against the illegally constructed temple in government property.
This temple has been constructed on land which according to the Land Survey Records belongs to the Goa housing board. However, it has been gifted to the Rumdamol Davorlim panchayat by the housing board as one of the many open spaces it had to leave after it developed a housing society there.

The Shri Ganesh temple also known as the Shri Gopal Ganapati temple is situated amidst beautiful natural surroundings at Farmagudi in Ponda at about 26 kms from Panjim.
It is known that in October, 1683 the fort of Ponda was attacked by the Portuguese Viceroy who due to the sudden appearance of the Maratha King Sambhaji with a large army, had to beat a hasty retreat. This event is commemorated in Farmagudi.
While grazing cattle near the hill the Gopal Ganapati stone image was discovered by herdsmen who later installed it in a small shrine with a thatched roof. In April 24, 1966 the first Chief Minister of Goa , late Shri Dayanand Bandodkar who built the temple had the idol made of metal alloy and consecrated.
The Shri Ganesh temple synthesizes both ancirnt and modern architecture and is a fine example of Indian temple architecture.
