A visit to the Krishna temple at Udupi
Located between the Arabian Sea and the Western ghats, Udupi in Karnataka was founded by the 13th century philosopher saint Madhavacharya. The Krishna temple here has many legends. One says that Madhva saved a ship from capsizing at sea. The grateful captain gave him a gopi chandana or sandalwood clump. Inside it was the idol.

Jagannath Puri in Odisha is the abode of Lord Jagannath (the Lord of the Universe) and is also known as Purushottama Kshetra. It is one of the four holy kshetras of India. Vidwan Sri Bannanje Govindacharya had given a lecture in Kannada on Madhwacharya moola yati shishya mahime at Puthige Mutt, Basavanagudi, Bangalore, on January 20 Sunday .There are many misconceptions on this topic. Sri Govindacharya, the best authority on the issue, will present the correct picture.
Sri Bannanje Govindacharya gave a lecture on direct disciples of Sri Madhwacharya at a programme organised by Taulava Madhwa Okkoota, Bangalore and Puthige Mutt, at Govardhana kshetra on January 20. It was Acharya at his brilliant best, outspoken, no qualms attached in breaking myths, and giving the right picture. Excerpts:
Sri Madhwa did not establish any moola mutt. He just installed the idol of Lord Krishna at Udupi and stayed there with his disciples including eight sanyasis of the present eight mutts and Padmanabha Theertha. He asked them to spread Tattvavada. Life was simple and austere, devoted to lessons and pooja. Monks were supposed to seek bhiksha at three, five or seven houses, offer the food prepared by housewives to the Lord and eat it. Food was prepared in accordance with shastras those days.
As householders became lax in achara vichara in the following years, this practice stopped and male staff started preparing naivedhya. Mutts came to be established. Nothing wrong in these institutions as long as they spread siddhanta and did not indulge in wrong activities.
Studying at the feet of Sri Madhwa was the ultimate privilege and nobody bothered to concentrate on writing independent works. There was no need. Of course Sri Vishnu Theertha and Sri Padmanabha Theertha did write but studying was the primary sadhana. Sri Madhwa gave idols to his sanyasi sishyas according to their upasana capacity and inclination. Highest among them was Vishnu Theertha and so Varaha idol and omkara naada upasana. Next was Rama Theertha of the present Kaniyur Mutt with Narasimha idol and 'ma' kaara upasana. Hrishikesha Theertha and Padmanabha Theertha next with Ramachandra idols and 'u' kaara upasana. The rest were given Krishna, Vittala idols and they did 'a' kaara upasana. Great souls because Acharya would not have given sanyasa deeksha to ordinary folks.
Hrishikesha Theertha did splendid job: writing down sarvamoola. The manuscripts were preserved only in his Palimar Mutt. Over the centuries some portions of them were eaten by moths. What was left was preserved luckily, with Raghuvarya Theertha taking copies of some of them. The manuscripts were preserved in a box and pooja was performed to them. None bothered to read them and decipher them. The challenging job was given to Sri Bannanje as willed by the Lord. He was allowed to take the manuscripts to his house in Ambalpady and study them. Many objected to the violation of 'madi' rules and 'loss' of Sarvamoola but Palimar Swamiji dismissed the objections and trusted Bannanje. He delivered. He spent days and nights pouring over them and bringing out the right meanings and suffered a lot in the process, healthwise, but did not mind because it was a seva to the Lord. Some rubbished his efforts but he did not mind.
Colossal loss
Sri Govindacharya said he has seen a manuscript titled Vishnu Theertha Vijaya. It probably contained the life history of Sri Madhwa's brother and achievements. But before he could lay his hands on it and study it, it disappeared. Either somebody lost it or deliberately destroyed it. Dark forces at work.
Sri Madhwa trusted Trivikrama Pandita and asked him to write Tattvapradeepa. The writings of Trivikrama Pandita and Hrishikesha Theertha matched, showing the same opinions. Satya Theertha was given an important task by Sri Madhwa because he was qualified. One should have read Vedas three times to qualify as sanyasi and he was qualified. He continued the Achyutaprajna lineage at Bhandarkere. Entire Barkur town belonged to Bhandarkere Mutt those days but all is lost now.
Narayana Pandita has clearly said in Bhavaprakashika that Narahari Theertha is none other than Narasimha Theertha, a fact which missed the attention of Sri B.N.K. Sharma and many others. Narahari is the original name and he was the first swamiji of Admar Mutt. He later joined hands with Padmanabha Theertha and spread Tattvavada. He built a Narasimha temple at Srikurmam and so was also called Narasimha Theertha.

ಈ ಚಿಂತನೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವು ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯಲೆಂದು ಜ್ಞಾನಗಮ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸರಣಗೊಳಿಸಲು ಬಯಸಿದ ಕುತ್ಪಾಡಿ ಆಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೂ ಅನುಮೋದಿಸಿದ ಬನ್ನಂಜೆ ಆಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೂ ಒಪ್ಪಿದ ತೌಳವ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟಕ್ಕೂ ಅಭಿನಂದನೆಗಳು – ಜ್ಞಾನಗಮ್ಯ ಪ್ರಸರಣ.

Origin of Hemmaragala – as a Name
There is No perfect evidence for the existence of the name Hemmaragala, but there are ancient stories for the name to exist.
1. Once upon a time this region ruled by a feudal lord by name Bheemappanaika. He had 16 Daughters and wished for a male child but his wife delivered again a female. So she prayed Sri Venugopaala swamy and left of the baby infront of the god. By the time Bheemappanaika came to temple the child had turned in to male. The face facing towards became Hedathale and the legs towards became Hemmaragala( Heamapuri).
2. Once Koundinya Maharshi visited to Hemapuri village which was almost a lake. He closes this place for meditation and blessed the place to grow and develop like the Trees surrounding the lake which was huge in size. So the name as Hemmaragala.( Hemmara means big Tree in vernacular language.)
3. Once a Demon existed in this village, he was Killed by a saint and his head was parted from his body . The Place where the head was fallen called as Headathale and the place where body was fallen is known Hemapuri and it became as Hemmaragala.
Like this there are many stories giving evidence to origin of name Hemmaragala. As Sri Venugopalaswamy was statued by Sri Koundinya Maharshi, it is Also called as “Koundinya Maharshi Kshetra ”.
Holycows ( Kaamadhenu) are there on either sides of Sri Venugopala, with Adishesha on head, hence it is also called by the name of “Govardhana Kshetra”.

The third rulers of Hoysala Veeraballaala were the commander of this region . Bheemappanaika, Manchedanayaka and Perumaladevanatyaka were the subsidiary ruler of Hoysala. They were responsible to conduct daily rituals of the lord. For this in 1298 A.D. they donated their land for the construction of the temple.
The Chola King who one ruled this region had 12 Female children and wished for a male child in the lord Venugopala then the lord appeared in the dream of king. The next day queen again gives birth to baby girl. This makes the king very angry and he criticizes the queen badly , bitterly moved by this the queen promises infront of the god to commit suicide if the baby girl born would not turn into boy the next day.
As a miracle the next day in the brahmi lagnam the child turns into male. Witnessing this the queen with love and devotion calls the god “Huchhu Gopala”. For this as thanks giving the Chola Maharaja ( King)made the stone floaring to the Kalyaani.
It is said that Huchhu Gopala is the folk pronounciation of “Utsaca Gopala” .
The King of Yaduvamsha of Mysore, Sri Kantirava Narasimha Raja Wodeyar, who need a male child for his succession prayed here in front of the lord and had a male birth. Rejoicing this he named his son after the lords name as Sri Mummadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar. This Shows the lords divinity everywhere.
When Sri mummadi KrishnaRaja Wodeyar came into power, he came to the holy place in 1810 and had the darshana of lard , he took the utsava murthy ( movable Idol)
to the Mysore Palace. Even today we can his statue in the temple . for the daily rituals and ceremonical processions
