A lot of the items – including ancient documents, rare artefacts, and art from ancient India inside Shri Pratap Singh Museum, Kashmir.
Kashmir has been historically known as one of the oldest habitations in Asia, having a distinction of a recorded and documented history of over 5000 years. Towards the end of the 19th century the historical sites, habitations and artifacts became recognized as the representatives of cultural resources of this civilization and in recognition of this, in the later part of the 19th century a memorandum was submitted to the then Dogra ruler of the Jammu and Kashmir State, Maharaja Pratap Singh for setting up of a museum in Srinagar that would exhibit the cultural and archaeological collections from the regions stretching from Jammu, Kashmir, Baltistan and Gilgit.
The Museum set up by; and named after the ruling maharaja as Shri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum is located outside the old Srinagar city in an upcoming suburban Lal Mandi area which was becoming increasing popular with the city elite for house-building during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Centuries old artistic shawls put on display in Srinagar
To promote the heritage tourism, Shri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum in Srinagar displayed centuries old shawls. The exhibition is organised by the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology and Museums. Kashmir valley has more than thousand years old rich cultural history. This valley of Sufi and saint’s produced number of artisans whose unique hand work in Papier-mache, wood carving and especially in shawl. Shawl works in the state have no comparison all over the world. Despite modernisation, authorities have preserved some rare and centuries old items including Kashmiri handmade shawls.

The Deptt. of Archives, Archaeology and Museums with its primary mandate to preserve the tangible heritage of Jammu and Kashmir is looking after 2-museums, 48-State protected monuments, 3-Archives repositories, 2-Museums.
The department has its establishments in 3-divisions of the State. The department has the distinction of possessing one of the oldest Archival Repositories in the sub-continent with record holdings dating back to Mughal period (1724 AD). There are two multipurpose museums one each at Jammu and Srinagar. Both the Museums are known for their collection world over.

Towards the end of the 19th century the historical sites, habitations and artifacts became recognized as the representatives of cultural resources of this civilization and in recognition of this, in the later part of the 19th century a memorandum was submitted to the then Dogra ruler of the Jammu and Kashmir State, Maharaja Pratap Singh for setting up of a museum in Srinagar that would exhibit the cultural and archaeological collections from the regions stretching from Jammu, Kashmir, Baltistan and Gilgit.
The Museum set up by; and named after the ruling maharaja as Shri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum is located outside the old Srinagar city in an upcoming suburban Lal Mandi area which was becoming increasing popular with the city elite for house-building during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The collections currently displayed in the museum fall under the following categories:
Numismatic
Manuscripts
Miniature paintings
Weapons and armoury
Utensils
Musical Instruments
Furniture and decorative items
Textiles and carpets
Items of leather, grass and willow work
Sculptures and other excavated objects
