Thanjavur Temple Tour Video Travelogue - Part 1/4
After my 12th Standard board exams finished in March, 2007, mom, dad and me undertook a tour of more than 30-40 temples in and around Thanjavur and Thiruvarur districts, Tamilnadu, India. This hour-long video, one in a series of four, is a compilation of what we were able to capture using a Sony handycam, during the tour. So, this is a Temple Tour Video Travelogue of sorts.
Swamimalai, one of the six Holy Sites for Lord Subrahmanya, gets a special mention, and festivals such as Soora Samhaaram, Theppa Kulam and Golden Chariot are captured, since that is where the three of us ended up staying for the next two years.
Also noteworthy of mention is that this tour covered all the nine Navagraha temples - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Kethu.
We have also covered all three Great Living Chola Temples - Thanjavur, Dharasuram and Gangai Konda Cholapuram, all three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

108 Shiva Temple Papanasam
108 Shiva Temple Papanasam(Ramalingeswarar Temple - 108 Sivalayam) is located in Papnasam town dedicated to Lord Shiva situated at a distance of 16 km from Kumbakonam. This temple was built by Lord Rama and the 108 Shiva Lingams were installed and workshipped by him.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama prayed to Shiva in order to be rid of the sin of killing Kara and Dooshna in the war against Ravana and installed 108 Shivalingas in penance at the particular spot. While 107 Shivalingas were made by him, the remaining one was brought from Varanasi by Hanuman.
The shrine faces west in violation of the Hindu canon of temple architecture. The Shivalingas, too, face west. There are shrines to Nandi, Kamadhenu, Murugan and his consorts Valli and Deivayanai, Shanisvara, Annapoorni, and Kasi Visalakshi.
There is a beautiful sculpture(located at the entrance of 108 Lingams)depicting the Shiva Pooja performed by Lord Rama, Sri Lakshmana, Mother Sita, and Sri Anjaneya.

Ramalinga adigal :a mystic saint of tamilnadu Arutprakasa Vallalar Chidambaram Ramalingam (Tamil: அருட்பிரகாச வள்ளலார் சிதம்பரம் இராமலிங்க அடிகள்) (5 October 1823 -- 30 January 1874), whose pre-monastic name was Ramalingam, is commonly known in India and across the world as Vallalar (Tamil: வள்ளலார்). He was one of the most famous Tamil Saints and also one of the greatest Tamil poets of the 19th century and belongs to a line of Tamil saints known as gnana siddhars (gnana means higher wisdom). The Suddha Sanmarga Sangam was spread and passed on by him not only in theory but mainly in practice by his own way of living which was itself inspiration for his followers. Through the notion of Suddha Sanmarga Sangam, the saint endeavored to eliminate the menace of caste. According to Suddha Sanmarga, the prime aspects of human life should be love connected with charity and divine practice leading to achievement of pure knowledge. He made an indelible mark in the religious history of India when he came out openly against its caste system and the negative impact it had on society. In an attempt to redress the situation he established the `Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga Satya Sangam in 1865, which means `Society for pure truth in universal self-hood'. He had also by this time shifted to a place called Karunguzhi from Chennai. His next step in establishing a practical approach to religion was the setting up of a free eating house called The Sathya Dharma Salai in a place called Vadalur in 1867, where all could eat without any distinctions whatsoever. Ramalinga Vallalar abhorred non-Vegetarianism. It is significant that the land on which this eating house was built was donated by a few landowners. The registered document is available for inspection even today and the service of providing free food also continues to this day. Ramalinga Adigal opened, the Sathya Gnana Sabha (Hall of True Knowledge) at Vadalur on January 25, 1872. One of the primary teaching of valallar is Service to mankind is path of moksha. He declared that death is not natural that our life's first priority should be to fight death. He declared religion in itself is a darkness. He laid a very great emphasis on being vegetarian. He said God is Arul Perum Jothi who is personification of mercy and knowledge. He said the path of compassion and mercy are only path to God. This place is not a temple as no offerings of fruits or flowers could be made, and no blessings were given. It was open to people of all castes except those who ate meat, who were only allowed to worship from the outside. The oil lamp lit by him is kept perpetually burning. He said that our soul is blinded by 7 seven veils.[10] There are seven cotton fabric screens, representing the seven factors that prevent a soul from realizing its true nature. The entire complex is bound by a chain with 21,600 links, said to represent 21,600 inhalations by a normal human being. He said intelligence we possess is Maya intelligence which is not true and final intelligence. Path of final intelligence is Jeeva Karunyam. He advocated a casteless society. Vallalar was opposed to superstitions and rituals. He forbade killing animals for the sake of food. He advocated feeding the poor as the highest form of worship. He condemned inequality based on birth. Ramalinga Adigal's disappearance on January 30, 1874 Ramalingar raised the flag of Brotherhood on his one room residence Siddhi Valakam in Mettukuppam on October 22. He gave his last and most famous lecture, entreating his audience to undertake a spiritual quest and look into the nature of the powers that lie beyond us and move us, and asking them to meditate on the lighted lamp from his room, which he placed outside. Adigal on January 30, 1874, entered the room and locked himself and told his followers not to open it. He said that even if they did open it they would find nothing. His seclusion spurred many rumors, and the Government finally forced the doors open in May. The room was empty, with no clues. The Madras District Gazetteer published by the South Arcot District in 1906 records his disappearance. Vallalar disappeared from the world on January 30, 1874 at age 51

Vallalar Ramalinga Adigal was born in South Arcot district, at a village called Maruthur, located near Chidambaram. His father Ramaiah Pillai was a village Munsif, and his mother was Chinnamayar. He was born on 5th october 1823 as a 5th child to this noble couple.
Childhood:
When Ramalinga was 5 months baby, his parents took him to Lord Nataraja's temple in Chidambaram. The 5 month old Ramalingam laughed towards Lord Siva and waved his hands towards the deity. The temple priest assured the parents that the baby was a sacred child of Lord Nataraja. In 1824, the very next month, his father Ramiah Pillai died. His sudden death forced a helpless Chinnamaiar to shift to the residence of her eldest son Sabhapati and his wife Parvathi at Chennai.
Education:
Ramalingam, at the age of 5, was put into school. But Ramalingam gave very poor attendance to school and uninterested in academic progress.. His sister-in-law, Pappathy burst into tears and requested Ramalingam to put an end to all this and live the life of a good regular student. Ramalingam promised her that he would prove to be a deityful student from theron. He also requested her to allot a room upstairs for his private lonely study. In his room upstairs, oneday Ramalingam had a spectaculr view of Lord Muruga in the mirror.
His elder brother Sabhapati was a upanyasaka. It so happened that once Ramalingam had to substitute for his brother at anupanyasam session. His brilliant exposition and uninterrupted flow of words while enunciating a verse from the `Periyapuranam', an epic poem by Sekkizhar narrating the episodes connected with the 63 Nayanars, amazed onlookers. Later his brother also graciously acknowledged the mental and spiritual superiority of his brother. In 1850, Ramalingam was married to his sister's daughter dhana kosthi merely to satisfy his family members. But the wedding night was spent by Ramalingam in a strange way.
Achievements :
He attained a state of blissfulness of immorality. He tried his level best to put an end to the vaidik domination in the temple of Chidambaram. The vaidik priests of the temple did not allow him to putforth.
1. Samarasa Sudha Sanmarga Sathya Sangam: His physical body was transformed into divine light. Vallalar cured the diseases of the tow wives of vettavalam zamindar. The zamindar and the people in and around vadalur offered their lands for the construction of Samarasa Sudha Sanmarga Sathya Sangam at vadalur in 1865.
2. Dharmasaalai and Gana Sabhai: He constructed Dharmasaalai -- house for feeding the poor and ganasabai -- the temple of true wisdom. On 23rd may 1867, Dharmasaalai was inaugurated and the Gana Sabhai was dedicated to the public on 25th January 1872 with the star poosam representing the day.
3. Water poured in a lamp kept it burning for the whole night: Vallalar lit the lamp with the help of water in venkat reddiar's house in karunguzhi while reddiar's wife forget to keep oil for the lamp in his room. On 18th april 1872, in mettukuppam, he wrote Arutperum joythi Agaval in a single day. It explains about his whole transformation.
4. First sanmarga flag hoisted: The first sanmarga flag was hoisted at mettukuppam on 22nd October 1873 and offered perupadesam on the same day at mettukuppam -- sidhivalagam.
5. Sidhivalagam: On 30th January 1874, Friday at midnight vallalar locked himself inside the room at mettukuppam -- sidhivalagam and offered his disciples not to open the door until they get the next message. If the door was opened before with the pressure of govt, there will be seen nothing. Later, the govt ordered to open the door. When it was opened, there was seen nothing except Arutperum Joythi. It clearly indicates that vallalar had transformed into grace light!
Ramalinga Adigals literary works:
As a musician and poet, he composed 5818 poems breathing universal love and peace, compiled into 6 TirumuraigaL, which are all available today as a single book called Thiruvarutpa (holy book of grace). Another work of his is the Manumurai Kanda Vaasagam describing the life of Manu Needhi Cholan.
Festivals:
Vallalar started the Jyoti Darshan (Lamp darshan) on Thai Poosam (January-February) in the year 1872. This festival is very devotionally celebrated since that day. The Jyoti darshan can be had by the devotees on this day only, after removing all the seven curtains in the Gnana Sabha -- Wisdom Hall. The seven curtains will be removed that day at 6.30 a.m., 10.00 a.m., 1.00 p.m., 7.00 p.m. 10.00 p.m. and 5.30 a.m. the next morning. During the Poosam star days, three such darshans are shown at 8.00 p.m. removing only six curtains.
