It-Torri l-Ahmar, as it's known in Maltese, is situated on the north coast of the island of Malta, overlooking Ghadira Bay and the Gozo Channel.

Breath taking views with no abstractions once you are on top of St. Agatha's Tower. An important building in the history of Malta which has been restored about two decades ago by Din L-Art Helwa for the public to appreciate.
St Agatha's Tower, also known as the Red Tower (Torri l-Ahmar), was designed by architect Antonio Garsin. The tower is a large bastioned watchtower in Mellieħa, Malta, built between 1647 and 1649, as the sixth of the Lascaris towers. St. Agatha's Tower was the last large bastioned tower to be built in Malta. It was the Knights' primary stronghold in the west of Malta, and was manned by a garrison of 30 men, with ammunition and supplies to withstand a siege of 40 days. The ammunition of other fortifications in the north of Malta, was also stored in this tower.
The tower is situated in a commanding position on the crest of Marfa Ridge at the north west end of Malta, overlooking the natural harbour and potential enemy landing site of Mellieħa Bay, with clear views over to Comino and Gozo, and also eastward to the line of watchtowers along the north shore of Malta that linked it with the Knights headquarters in Valletta.
The structure consists of a square tower with four corner towers. Cannon ports in the turrets gave interlocking fields of fire commanding the base of the walls and the gateway, with other large cannon ports in the faces of the main tower. The outer walls are approximately four metres thick at the base. The corner turrets are surmounted by very characteristic fish tail crenelations. The interior of the tower is enclosed by a barrel vaulted roof. A chapel was also located within the tower.
By the close of the 20th century St. Agatha's Tower was in poor repair, with one turret completely missing and another turret severely damaged. The tower was gradually restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, starting in 1999 and completed in 2001.
As part of the restoration work, the damaged turrets were replaced, the walls and roof were rebuilt, eroded stone facing was replaced, interior walls were scraped and painted, the original floor was uncovered, and the interior staircase to the roof was rebuilt. Due to the extreme unevenness of the floor, this was recently covered by a wooden surface with glass apertures through which one can view the original slabs.

St Agatha's Tower - Malta 2019
I purchased a Mavic Air before my hols this year to Malta. Took it with me, and this is the first of a series of videos of some of the footage I got with this amazing drone.
I was using the default settings on the controller so footage is a bit jerky, especially with the camera. In future videos you will see that I modified the settings and the shots are a lot smoother.
This is a great addition to my arsenal of film gear.

A trip to the North of Malta will take us to Mistra Bay, Selmun Palace, the St Agatha or Red Tower, L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha or Rdum tal-Madonna.
We also visit the Ghadira Nature Reserve and finally we go to the beautiful Anchor Bay and see the Popeye Village. This is the same set up which was used to film Popeye. Today, it's a theme Park.

Trekking Malta - Ras il-Qammieħ
A walk along the cliffs at Ras il-Qammieħ, past the Red Tower (St. Agatha's Tower) that overlooks Għadira Bay, north of Mellieħa. We then descend to the fossil-ridden golden globigerina limestone shore beneath the cliffs and continue onward to the boulder scree that lies beneath the blue-clay slopes at the edge of this promontory. We return through the Foresta 2000 reforestation site.
