England - St. Albans - Tour to St Albans Cathedral
St Albans Cathedral, formally the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban, and referred to locally as the Abbey, is a Church of England cathedral in St Albans, England. Much of its architecture dates from Norman times. It ceased to be an abbey in the 16th century and became a cathedral in 1877. Although legally a cathedral church, it differs in certain particulars from most other cathedrals in England: it is also used as a parish church, of which the dean is rector with the same powers, responsibilities and duties as that of any other parish.[3]
Probably founded in the 8th century, the present building is Norman or Romanesque architecture of the 11th century, with Gothic and 19th-century additions.

England 2019 Episode 01: St Albans
St Albans Cathedral was built in 1077 on the site of a Saxon abbey founded in the 8th century, which in turn supplanted an earlier church constructed in the 4th c., making this the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in England. The massive bell tower is the oldest of its kind still standing in England. From the 12th - 14th centuries, the Abbot of St Albans was the second most important church official in England, outranked only by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The nave incorporates extremely rare 12th - 16th c. wall paintings. Behind the altar, the richly carved Wallingford Screen was originally created in 1484, destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries, and restored in the 19th century.
Alban was a Roman soldier who was converted to the Christian faith circa 300 through the efforts of a local evangelist monk. In a ruse designed to protect the monk from his persecutors, Alban disguised himself as the monk. As a result, Alban was beheaded in place of the monk, making him England's first Christian martyr. His body was buried on the site where the church now stands, and was later reinterred inside the cathedral in the Shrine of St Alban. From the oak Watching Loft (circa 1400) medieval monks kept watch over the shrine. Sadly, the shrine was destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries, but the broken pieces were discovered and reassembled in the 19th century.
Back outside, the Gateway building leading into the abbey grounds was constructed in 1365. Now part of St Albans School, it is the only monastic building other than the church itself to survive the dissolution.
The medieval belfry in the town center was completed in 1412 and boasts an even earlier curfew bell from 1335. We enjoyed some time at the town's traditional street market before heading to Cambridge.

St ALBANS HERTFORDSHIRE UK 1960s
The St Albans area has a long history of settlement. The Celtic Catuvellauni tribe had a settlement at Prae Hill a mile or so to the west. The Roman town of Verulamium, second-largest town in Roman Britain after Londinium, was built alongside this in the valley of the River Ver a little nearer to the present town centre.
After the Roman withdrawal, and prior to becoming known as St Albans, the town was called Verlamchester or Wæclingacaester by the Mercian Angles.
The mediaeval town grew up on the hill to the east of this around the Benedictine foundation of St Albans Abbey. This is the spot where tradition has it that St Alban, the first British Christian martyr, was beheaded sometime before AD 324. It was, at one time, the principal abbey in England and the first draft of Magna Carta was drawn up there, reflecting its political importance. The Abbey Church, now St Albans Cathedral (formally the Cathedral & Abbey Church of St Alban but still known locally as The Abbey) became the parish church when it was bought by the local people in 1553, soon after the priory was dissolved in 1539. It was made a cathedral in 1877 when the City Charter was granted. There is evidence that the original site was somewhat higher up the hill than the present building and there had certainly been successive abbeys before the current building was started in 1077
