09 Leader Road to Waiau 2016 on a Boom Mustang
Today’s ride takes us 126km north of Christchurch, through some small North Canterbury towns such as Amberley, Cheviot and Parnassus. There is a small stop at St Annes Lagoon, a pretty picnic spot just 4km north of Cheviot.
Then onward to Parnassus, turning off State Highway 1, and onto Leader Road. Leader Road is a 32km stretch of road that is a joy to discover.
At times the road follows the river, with wide sweeping corners and up over the ranges to be rewarded with epic views of the snow covered mountains. This trip was at the end of Winter. Spring has only just begun. There is plenty of ice grit on the road, making the journey a little slower, but still wonderfully scenic.
Leader Road meanders through to Waiau, another small Canterbury farming town. If you are passing this way, be sure to stop at the Waiau Pub and take a walk around some the historic buildings adjacent the town park.
