Saint Augustine: Apostle of England (Trailer)
In the year 597AD on the island of Thanet in Kent, a landing took place which would change the course of English history. It was the coming of a holy man, a saint, a man of learning and faith. His name was Augustine. He brought the Christian gospel from Rome for the new peoples of this island, the Anglo-Saxons. The conversion of their local king Ethelbert would inaugurate a new era, not only of faith, but of culture, art, literature and ultimately the beginning of what we call England today.
Fr Marcus Holden is parish priest and custodian of the newly established Shrine of Augustine in Ramsgate. In this exciting DVD presentation, he guides you on a tour of the story of Augustine, his mission, his legacy and relevance today.
St. Augustine's Cross.
This 19th-century cross of Saxon design marks what is traditionally thought to have been the site of St Augustine's landing on the shores of England in AD 597. Accompanied by 30 followers, Augustine is said to have held a mass here before moving on.

St Augustine’s Abbey, Ramsgate was one of the Benedictine monasteries in Great Britain forming the English Province of the international Benedictine Congregation of Subiaco. The Abbey was founded as a result of the invitation made by Bishop Thomas Grant, the first Bishop of Southwark, to the Italian abbot Dom Pietro Casaretto, to send monks from St Benedict’s own monastery at Subiaco to undertake a mission at Ramsgate. By 1856 arrangements between Bishop Grant and Abbot Casaretto were concluded and the first monk, Dom Wilfrid Alcock, arrived to take charge at the Ramsgate mission which had been made possible thanks to the building of a Gothic church by the famous Gothic Revivalist architect Augustus Welby Pugin, which was donated to the Diocese of Southwark before his premature death in 1852.
St. Augustine's Cross near Cliffsend
In the years 1860-61, with the help of Mr Alfred Luck, a wealthy and devout benefactor, the monastery of St Augustine of Canterbury was built, the first Benedictine monastery to be built in England since the Reformation. Shortly afterwards a full monastic observance was established. The monastery gained independence from Subiaco in 1876, becoming a Priory in 1881 and was raised to the status of an Abbey by Pope Blessed Pius IX in 1896. A school was established for in 1865, which grew to provide to a Catholic education for boys for well over 130 years, finally closing in 1995.

Should you visit St Giles' Church, Pugin's Gem, Cheadle?
The year is 1841 and you are John Talbot, 16th Earl Of Shrewsbury, 16th Earl Of Waterford, Lord High Steward of Ireland based in Alton and the greatest Catholic in the land. Queen Victoria has just started her long reign. Britain is the most powerful country the globe had ever seen.
So you hire Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, the greatest living devout Catholic to build you the most perfect church. He has just completed the church that was to be St Chads Cathedral in Birmingham. He has just completed your house in Alton. He designed the interior of the houses of parliament. Your motives are many but you wish to encourage the catholic faith by building a perfect church. And over 5 years Pugin does just that – magnificently so.
So the question is now should you visit the church which is St Giles in Cheadle – known far and wide as Pugin’s Gem.
St Giles Church is near the centre of Cheadle and to get to it you cross the road and approach the doors adorned with the Talbot arms lion. But they are locked. You go around the church until the real entrance appears and walk in.
All is sumptuous ornament, with every ornament having significance and a depth of multiple meanings. This is a church based on a Christian vision overlaid with deep reverence based on a deep understanding of Christian ritual and history.
We take a tour of the 14 stations of the cross, each identified and surrounded by ornament and stained glass.
Then we look at the lady chapel and pulpit before stepping back to admire the Rood Screen with it’s painting called Doom high in the roof vault.
Beyond the screen lies the chancel, the priests area. It is even more richly decorated evoking a spiritual vision of the middle ages in some fantasy of devout perfection. We see the Easter Sepulchre, the Sedilia and most magnificent of all the high altar.
This is a place of religious devotion with a deep spirituality laid in a jewel box of gothic extravagance only made possible by the vastly over performing Pugin.
To keep the film down in length much has been omitted and there is much more for you to explore and enjoy at whatever level you seek.
When we were there a deep silence ruled, but for the purposes of this film I have added copyright free music I feel appropriate.
Part of a series of videos I make because I can. Enjoy
