This study looks at the art & architecture of seven historic churches in the south east of Norfolk: Hellington, St. John the Baptist; Heckingham, St. Gregory; Hales, St. Margaret; Moulton, St. Mary; Buckenham, St. Nicholas; Frenze, St. Andrew; Shimpling, St. George.

My first attempt at a 4k video. Not Oscar winning, but, I am quite pleased as a first effort. Unfortunately the weather was horrid that day: dull, flat, low light - just another typical Autumnal day in England when you cannot choose the days you go out and do this! But, I hope you enjoy as it is a lovely little isolated church in a rather unique setting, and dates back to the early 13th Century following Thomas a Becket's murder in 1170. It has been re-built since then, but, it is a very cute, quaint little place.

The Cathedral of the Marsh
Here I take a look around All Saints' Church Lydd.
Lydd lies in the middle of Romney Marsh between Dungeness and Appledore .
Originally on the coast it was a famous port and fishing town lying on an island on the opposite side of the estuary of the river Rother to New Romney . Lydd was founded on an island in the marshes by the Saxons and was known as Hylda .
Edward I in the Cinque Ports charter gave the rights to Lydd so that it shared taxes with New Romney on the catches of fish landed in the area.
The stonework of All Saints church was started by the Saxons, and some of this original stonework is still visible by the font. The wealth of Lydd enabled the church to be enlarged until it is now the largest of the churches on the Romney Marsh and is known as the Cathedral of the Marshes . The church tower was raised to 132ft high by Cardinal Wolsey in the 15th century.
In 1287 the Great Storm hit the channel and blocked the mouth of the Rother, changing its course to run south from Appledore to Rye . This change turned the harbour at Lydd into farmland and marsh, and destroyed its main claim to fame.
As the land grew around the island so the fishermen moved with it to the sea, today at Lydd on Sea about 3 miles south.

The Saddest Scene - St James Church Yard, Cooling, Hoo Peninsula, Rochester, Kent. ???? Yesterday, Isle of Hoo, Kent, about 30 minutes outside of Bromley. One of the saddest things I’ve seen. Within St James Church yard, village of Cooling, on The Hoo Peninsula, Rochester, Kent. From the 18th century, the tombs of many baby siblings lost to a family. Infant mortality at that time was very high so though these numbers were many even for that time, the situation would not have been completely unusual. These baby tombs, brothers and sisters, all lined up side by side made a sobering vision in that ancient old churchyard, and it isn’t surprising to learn that this same scene was where Charles Dickens got his inspiration for the famous scene in Great Expectations. In the book the hero Pip looks at the graves of his parents and his many dead brothers and sisters and where he meets the convict Magwitch. #kenthistory #charlesdickens #greatexpectations

St John the Evangelist Church, Wooton, Surrey
Here I take a look around the charming parish church of St John the Evangelist. St. John's is situated in the hamlet of Wotton standing at the end of Church Lane overlooking the North Downs. This is one of my favourite places to visit along the old A25.
The church dates back to Saxon times although only a few of the original footings now remain to the west of the Norman tower. Much of the church was, out of necessity, restored in Victorian times. The church also contains the Evelyn Chapel where there are some magnificent monuments and the tomb of John Evelyn, the diarist.
