St Blane's Church and Monastery, Isle of Bute
Beautifully located early Christian site in south Bute. Ruined church with upper and lower burial-grounds. Some very old grave-stones. Objects documented include: Celtic cross, plinth or base of cross showing socket, basin or font, Romanesque doorway, piscina and aumbry. Note similarities of design of piscina and aumbry to those of St. Mary's medieval church on Bute.

St. Mary's medieval chapel, Isle of Bute.This was apparently the chancel of the medieval parish chapel originally, according to CANMORE. The ruins have been fairly recently re-roofed providing protection for the already weathered tombs inside. Remains of the holy well is to be seen across the road.

During the 1200s the whole of the Isle of Bute formed a single parish served by St Blane's Church near the southern end of the island. But in the early 1300s a second parish was formed, covering the north of the island and the increasingly important settlement of Rothesay. This was served by St Mary's Church, Rothesay.
The lady's tomb is thought to have formed an integral part of the chancel when the original church was built in the years following 1300. The identity of the lady entombed here is not certain, though some have said that she is Alice, the first wife of Walter Stewart, the 6th High Steward of Scotland, and father (by his second wife) of Robert II.
The knight's tomb was built into the existing wall of the chancel some time at the end of the 1300s. It may have been built by Robert II as his intended resting place: if so it ended up being occupied by someone else, for he is interred at Scone. Investigations in the early 1800s found the remains of three skeletons in the tomb.

Prince Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor) arrives in Rothesay Harbour on a small naval barge. He is wearing a kilt and other Scottish dress. He is greeted on the harbour by several local dignitaries. He walks from the docks followed by the dignitaries. The route is lined by crowds and the Prince stops to chat with people (mainly war veterans). The Prince gets into an open car and is driven away.

This is footage of St. Blane's Church on the Southern end of the Isle of Bute, filmed on 26th August 2011 whilst on a walk with my Dad around the Kilchattan Bay/Glencallum Bay/St. Blane's area. It was a long 3 hour walk, and we passed this fascinating point of interest towards the end of our walk. This is just a quick video walking around the entire ruins of the church, which date from the 1100's.

Bute's hidden gem and just up the road from The Glenburn and Bay View! We visited in late September in the rain so spent more time in the greenhouses than we planned. The birds were somewhat subdued too.

Monk's Well, St. Andrews
Ancient holy well or spring located in cemetery adjoining St. Andrews Cathedral grounds. The water inside the interesting structure is stagnant and full of litter and debris. CANMORE, citing Morris and Morris (1982) refer to the well as Monk's Well. They add that St. Cainnech [Kenneth] is associated with it, having supposedly built up a small community there, possibly because it was a holy spot in pre-Christian days. A later well, also derelict, is situated close by, against the wall.
