Arundel, a historic market town in West Sussex, England
A slideshow of my visit to the beautiful town of Arundel in West Sussex, England. This historic market town is situated on the River Arun and boasts some breathtaking views as you approach it from the surrounding countryside, taking in its famous castle, cathedral and parish church of St Nicholas. I visited the town with my grandad in June last year, (one of many visits I have made during my 36 years). We started by trekking up the very, very steep hill to St Nicholas' church, a favourite place of mine to always visit. It was built in 1380 and looks out over the town. The churchyard is much like any other English country churchyard, excepting the rather emotive sight of a statue of Christ on the cross with the dramatic backdrop of Arundel Castle in the background.
Then onto Arundel Castle, where we lunched in the grounds before entering the Fitzalan Chapel, which can be seen from the interior of St Nicholas' church, but accessed from the castle grounds (hence a long walk!). The chapel is very fine with exquisite carvings, engravings and brasses. It has a quiet and eerie atmosphere, as befitting its age and function. Oliver Cromwell is said to have stabled his horses in the chapel during the English Civil War, when the Arundel Castle changed hands 3 times. Then we looked around the newly opened Earl's gardens, which were full of delights for keen gardeners like myself and my grandad (that's where I get it from.) There were some lovely views looking towards the Cathdral (built 1873) and the aforementioned church. The castle itself was our last port of call, sadly no cameras were permitted inside. I find it hard to get excited about portraits and silver spoons in glass cabinets, so this was the dullest part of the visit for me, excepting the reputed bedroom of Queen Matilda, a great but tragic figure of English history. Best thing of all was time spent with my grandad :-)
Arundel's other great attraction is of course the Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, a place I visit often, but not on this day (not enough time).

Walton & Frinton Lifeboat - Potted History in Pictures
We have a great affinity for the local lifeboat station and are constantly amazed at their selfless commitment to assist others in difficulties.
At a recent open evening in the town earlier this year this presentation has been prepared from images taken from a book detailing the history of the towns lifeboat and crews. Many historical and more recent photographs set to some evocative music illustrate the dedication and bravery of the volunteers that have served this part of the coast for over 125 years.

PARNELLITES, MARK 11 : Seamus Breathnach : James JOYCE IV
Come, Gather Round Me , Parnellites...
A Ballad To Be Sung With Much Drink
Born in Braintree, Essex, in January 1846, Katharine Wood was well connected. She first met Charles Stewart Parnell in 1880. She had been married to Captain William O'Shea , but to a avoid a life of unhappiness they were separated or in the process of such a separation. Parnell loved Katharine O' Shea deeply. The couple had three children.
Although accounts differ as to how Captain O'Shea felt about his wife's intrigue , he vacillated between challinging Parnell to a duel in 1881 to remaining publicly silent about it until he filed for divorce in 1889.
In any event the love- affair brought down Parnell, who had agitated for Irish freedom so successfully, that he became known as the 'uncrowned king of Ireland'.
One of his devoted supporters was John Stanislaus Joyce, father of James Joyce. Honourable though the affair was, it was used by the moralists of the day on both sides of the Irish sea to retard the Irish Home Rule movement and, of course, destroy the secular Irish leader. it also had a negative efffect on Stanislaus Joyce. It made him virtually 'berufsverboten' or unemployable. Stanislaus' loyalty to Parnell meant challenging the Irish Catholic bishops and their endless supply of unforgiving liege zealots.
James Joyce, who watched the effects of the secular failure of Parnell against both Victoran morality and Roman Catholic conservatism, never forgot how easy it was for the religious in Ireland to control the people.
But in this Ballad , it is William Butler Yeats who rounds most effectively on the Irish bishops. Yeats, a conservative, did not like the RCC's dishonourable interference in Irish political life -- and in his poem addressed to the suppressed 'drinking classes', he makes his feelings clear.
(If we contrast RCC 'values' a century later , we find that the Catholic Bishops are as protective of widespread clerical pedophelia as they had been denunciatory of Parnell's very natural proclivities).
In 1914 Katharine O' Shea published a biography of Parnell as Katharine O'Shea (Mrs Charles Stewart Parnell). To her friends she was known as Katie O'Shea. Parnell's righteous enemies, however, called her 'Kitty O'Shea'. According to Wikipedia, this was a name used to damage both him and her personally, ' because at that time kitty, as well as being an Hiberno-English version of Catherine/Katherine/Katharine, was also a slang term for a prostitute. She lived the rest of her life in relative obscurity, and is buried in Littlehampton, Sussex, England.'

SUMMARY
=======
The Third Order of Saint Francis, historically known as the Order of Penance of Saint Francis, is a third order within the Franciscan movement of the Catholic Church. It includes both congregations of vowed men and women, and fraternities of men and women living standard lives in the world, married most of the time.
It has been believed that the Third Order of Saint Francis was the oldest of all third orders, but historical evidence does not support this. Similar institutions are found in documentation of some monastic orders in the 12th century. In addition, a third order has been found among the Humiliati, confirmed together with its rule by Pope Innocent III in 1201.In 1978, the Third Order of Saint Francis was reorganised and given a new Rule of Life by Pope Paul VI. With the new rule, the name used by the secular branch of the order was changed to the Secular Franciscan Order.
