Places to see in ( Oban - UK )
Oban is a resort town within the Argyll and Bute council area of Scotland. Despite its small size, Oban is the largest town between Helensburgh and Fort William. During the tourist season, the town of Oban can play host to up to 25,000 people.
Oban occupies a setting in the Firth of Lorn. The bay is a near perfect horseshoe, protected by the island of Kerrera; and beyond Kerrera, the Isle of Mull. To the north, is the long low island of Lismore, and the mountains of Morvern and Ardgour.
The area around Oban is rich with attractions for tourists, from the dramatic scenery of the coast and mountains to the fascinating histories of the local castles and ancient religious sites. There are also many activities available for families and those interested in more active pursuits. The Oban and Lorn tourist information website has detailed information for visitors. The Oban Visitor Information Centre, operated by VisitScotland, is located in the Columba Buildings on the North Pier.
Oban lies at the western end of the A85 road. It also has a railway station from where a number of Abellio ScotRail trains run to and from Glasgow Queen Street daily. The town is also an important ferry port: it is Caledonian MacBrayne's busiest terminal. Oban is known as the Gateway to the Isles, with ferries sailing to the islands of Lismore, Colonsay, Islay, Coll, Tiree, to Craignure on Mull, to Castlebay on Barra and to Lochboisdale on South Uist. In 2005, a new ferry terminal was opened, and in 2007 a second linkspan opened, allowing two vessels to load/unload at the same time.

Scottish Islands Legends + St Mary Magdalene buried on Iona + St Columba
Furthermore, according to Christine Hartley, in her classic work The Western Mystery Tradition (1968): “There is a legend too that Mary Magdalene lies buried in Iona.” Writing about Mary Magdalene’s legendary association with Scotland, Hartley further says, “Wandering the hills of Scotland, she came to Knoydart.” Knoydart is a peninsula located on the west coast of Scotland adjacent to the Isle of Skye which, as we have seen, has a possible association with Jesus. Some ten miles or so, south of Knoydart, can be found another west coast peninsula named Moidart where, on old maps, can be seen the placename Essa Hill, which may relate to the presence of Jesus/Isa there. Pertinently, during the 1st century A. D. Jesus was known in the Egyptian Christian Coptic Church as Essa, which is the phonetic pronunciation of Isa. It is intriguing to note that legends and placenames appear to link both Jesus and Mary Magdalene to the hebridean western isles and the west coast of Scotland.
It is likely that Christine Hartley’s source for this intriguing legend was the Scottish writer William Sharp who, in his essay on Iona, remarks: “A Tiree man, whom I met some time ago on the boat that was taking us both to the west, told me there’s a story that Mary Magdalene lies in a cave in Iona.. Perhaps an islesman had heard a strange legend about Mary Magdalene.. In Mingulay, one of the south isles of the Hebrides, in South Uist, and in Iona, I have heard a practically identical tale told with striking variations.” This would suggest there was an oral tradition current among the western isles of Scotland which placed Mary Magdalene there.

King Arthur In Scotland - Arthurs O'on Round Table - Battle of Cammlan - Camelon Falkirk
Music - The Egyptian by Clanadonia
The strongest candidate, however, is Camelon, near Falkirk, on the south side of the River Forth. In 1522, Hector Boece associated Colania with King Cruthneus Camelon of the Picts. In 1695, Gibson recorded that the old Roman Fort of Colania at Camelon, on the outskirts of Falkirk, was: “A little ancient city, where the common people believe there was formerly a road for ships. They call it Camelot. It may be gathered from history that this was the Palace of the Picts.” If it was indeed a “palace of the Picts”, it becomes a logical site for a battle between the Picts and the Gododdin. Camelon is connected to a place called “Arthur’s O’on”, a structure that stood until 1743, when it was demolished. “Arthur’s Oven” has been put forward as the site of the “Round Table”, because as if it were the circular baking-place, it could be the location where food was prepared for the Knights of the Round Table. And let us note that it was apparently also known as Camelot. Camelon, once a Roman temple, is recorded in Bowert’s Scotichronicon as having been erected by Julius Caesar. Caesar came to the River Forth and had the temple erected to sleep in, apparently its stones being carried around with him. When he heard of trouble in Gaul from ships sailing into the Firth of Forth, Caesar immediately departed, leaving the temple behind. But that is not all; the story continues that Arthur liked to come to this site “by way of recreation”. Nennius does tell us that Carausius built, on the banks of the Carron, a roundhouse of polished stone as a triumphal arch in memory of his victory. Centuries later, Hector Boece stated that it was raised by Vespasian, in honour of his predecessor Claudius, and that it covers the ashes of the distinguished officer Aulus Plautius. It suggests that though Bower might have overlaboured the point by linking it with Julius Caesar, it was a place where the Romans honoured their military leaders. If Arthur was a Roman warrior, where better to come to “by way of recreation”; what better description of Camelot and the home of its twelve most valiant knights: the Knights of the Round Table?.

‘The archaeology of Charles Thomas on Iona’- Adrian Maldonado
‘The archaeology of Charles Thomas on Iona: activating the potential of museum and archive collections’
Abstract: The recent Iona Research Group excavations on the island of Iona, Argyll & Bute have attracted national news and international interest. The current archaeological project, ongoing since 2015, was originally tasked with writing up the unpublished excavations of Charles Thomas on the famous early Christian monastery in 1956-63, funded by Historic Environment Scotland. The archive of these excavations was in a good enough state that it was possible to relocate finds and reconstruct the stratigraphy from notes, photographs and drawings. The result of this work merited a limited amount of re-excavation to obtain more contextual and dating material in 2017. While this is now growing into a much larger field project and reassessment of a critical site in the history of Britain and Ireland, we see this as just one high-profile instance of the power of museum archives and legacy data. It will be argued that more funding should be diverted toward activating such legacy data, which have the potential to add value to existing collections in various underrepresented communities, as a form of sustainable local heritage practice.

The King Of Love My Shepherd Is - Jess Turner, Eltham High School Symphonic Band
Eltham High School Symphonic Band, Conducted by Rick Plummer. Recorded at Mid Year Concert on June 22 2017
“The King of Love, My Shepherd Is” is a an old Irish hymn tune with a lovely text by Henry W. Baker. The Text paraphrases Psalm 23. “The King of Love, My Shepherd Is” has found some recent fame as a result of being sung at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997. This particular arrangement was originally conceived for choir by Dan Forrest, a prominent choral composer, and Transcribed for band by Jess Langton Turner.
Eltham High School Symphonic Band:
The Music Program at Eltham High School is internationally renowned for its excellence and is recognised as one of the finest school instrumental programs in Australia. The Symphonic Band is the most senior of four wind ensembles at the School.
Over many years the band has built a prestigious reputation both locally and internationally. Highlights include performing at the Midwest Clinic in 1997 and 2014. The Symphonic Band have been awarded first place in the Premier Wind Ensemble section at the Royal South Street Eisteddfod 4 out of the past 5 years.
The Symphonic Band have been fortunate to work with many great Conductors and Composers over the years, including Frank Ticheli, Prof. Mark Camphouse, Dr. John Lynch, Dr. Steven Davis and Dr. Stephen Peterson, just to name a few.
Through their repertoire, the Symphonic Band reflects on life and sources of inspiration. For many their inspiration is family, friends, life experiences and each other. Each year Eltham High School commissions various composers to write for the ensemble, to add to the depth of Australian repertoire available. The thought provoking themes of the repertoire that these gifted composers have provided the ensemble ensure that the journey is rich and connected to the young musician’s lives.
In 2014 they toured the USA. As part of this tour they had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s greatest composers and educators, as well as performing in concerts with the United States Air Force Band and the Brooklyn Wind Symphony. The Band also presented at the Midwest Clinic assisting Dr. Ingrid Martin & Jodie Blackshaw with their repertoire and education clinics.
