Ukrainian Winter Holidays (Canada, 1942) / Українські зимові свята (Канада, 1942)
Ukrainian communities of the Canadian prairies still follow the Julian calendar and celebrate Christmas on the seventh of January. Traditional foods are prepared for the holy Christmas Eve supper, eaten when the first star of the evening appears. Then traditional carols and light-hearted dances in gay costume continue the festivities. In striking contrast, on Christmas Day the Ukrainians gather at the Greek Orthodox church to worship in a solemn service with ancient ritual.

Ukraine: Moscow Patriarchate worshippers protest religious bills outside the Rada
Around 1,000 representatives and activists of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC MP) protested outside the Ukrainian parliament (Rada) in Kiev, Thursday, against the passing of a law on the 'special status' of their church.
Representatives of the UOC MP urged deputies not to vote for bill No. 4511 'On the special status of religious organisations whose governing centres are located in a state recognised as an aggressor.' Another bill would require the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to coordinate all appointments of top and middle management positions with the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
Protesters see the laws as designed to diminish the UOC MP in Ukraine.
Believers held placards with slogans such as 'God is with us' and 'Bills 4511 and 4128 - state persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.' Participants of the rally also read prayers.

(Part 1) St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church 100th Hram Celebration 2019 -Shell Valley, Manitoba
[See Chapter links and credits below]
This video documents a special moment in the history of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church and the Shell Valley, Manitoba community: the 100th Hram, patron Saint day, service celebrated there.
The church was founded by Romanian and Ukrainian settlers from the province of Bucovina. Their faith and religion was important to them individually and collectively as a spiritual and social support to their fulfilling but often demanding and isolated lives on the Canadian prairies. Change happened quickly from the time of their arrival in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The modernisation of farming practices and the rise of the consumer economy emptied the countryside of the members of families that had broken the land of the buffalo and territories of the first nations peoples only a generation or two before.
The St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church 100th Hram Celebration is a testament to the committed investment of current church members to keeping the faith and culture alive. The beautiful sounds of the choir, the rituals of the service and the unique material culture of the place capture a significant historical moment.
This service is a coming together of people near and far, the diaspora, to connect with the spiritual roots of our ancestors on an isolated corner of Manitoba parkland.

Russian Patriarch did not attend funeral service of his Ukrainian friend
Russian Patriarch Kirill did not attend the funeral service for Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev. The spiritual leader of Ukrainian Orthodox believers died on July 5th at age 78. He was buried at the cemetery of the Kiev Monastery of the Caves.
Earlier, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church was warned of possible consequences in case of his visit to the Ukrainian land. Patriarch Kirill was promised not to receive a warm welcome.
Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk went to attend the service instead of Patriarch Kirill, to avoid possible provocations by radicals. Metropolitan Vladimir was buried on July 7th.
