George Peponis - Hellenic Museum - Through a Child's Eyes Exhibition
Hellenic Museum - Hellenic.org.au
Through a Child's Eyes is an audio-visual exhibition examining the lives of those who came to Australia as children during the period of mass assisted migration post 1952. By choosing 12 subjects representing different fields of endeavor including Education, Sport, Politics, the Arts, Medicine, Business and Law, the inter-active exhibition provides an insight into the struggles, dreams, aspirations and achievements of these child migrants.
St. George City Spotlight
Although settlers came to Washington County as early as 1852, St. George was settled in 1861. Mormon leader Brigham Young sent a group of pioneers to the far reaching corner of the Territory of Utah to grow cotton and wine grapes and harvest silk for export to the Civil War-torn northern states. Today the cotton fields are gone, the wineries are closed and the silk industry has given way to modern, more prosperous businesses.
St. George, the county's largest city, lies along interstate 15 with a host of smaller communities that make up Utah's Dixie. The advantages of the county's position along one of the nation's key north-south routes between California and places such as Salt Lake City, Denver and Albuquerque is making Washington County one of the nation's fastest growing communities. The scenic area not only provides easy access to major markets of the western United States, it has become a destination point for countless people and businesses looking for a better way of life and more fruitful atmosphere for growth and prosperity.
From 1990 to 1995, Washington County grew a staggering 50 percent and St. George grew 61 percent, while the rest of the state tallied up a total growth rate of 16 percent. The tiny farming community of St. George had grown up and surrounding cities followed suit.
By the end of the decade, the St. George - Zion National Park areas of Washington County were rated among the best communities in the country to retire by Rand McNalley, Prentice Hall, Money and the American Association of Retired People. As a result there was a large amount of construction of new homes in the Washington County area.
The unprecedented growth experienced in the county has not been limited to retirees, however. Young working families joined the migration to Utah's Dixie to establish one of the most stable and reliable work forces in the nation. They came for the climate, the scenic beauty, the family atmosphere and explosive job opportunities. Much of the growth is due to the area's competitive construction rates and low crime.

Tourist In Your Own Town #45 - National Lighthouse Museum
The National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island is a reminder of how lighthouses played an important role in the security and well being of New York and the United States. The museum is located in one of the buildings of the former lighthouse depot complex that dates back to 1862. The organization offers special events, lectures and occasional boat tours to nearby lighthouses.
The complex includes the landmarked 1868-69 Office Administration Building. It is the only remaining Alfred B. Mullett designed building in New York City. Mullett was the supervising architect of the U.S. Treasury and designed the old New York General Post Office that once stood in City Hall Park.
Plan your Visit.
The museum is located just south of the St. George (Staten Island) Ferry Terminal, about a five-minute walk. Check the website for hours & fees; they are closed on Mondays.

Saint Louis Art Museum | Self-Taught Genius
Self-Taught Genius explores American folk art through the concept of a self-taught genius, an enduring term that has changed dramatically over time. Framed within a context of seven principles from which people are compelled to create—achievers, encoders, messengers, improvement, reformers, ingenuity, and guides—this exhibition highlights more than 100 remarkable works by self-taught artists.
The exhibition considers the shifting implications of self-taught and outsider art in the United States, from an established movement of self-education to artists working outside traditional frameworks who defy our understanding of what is normal. Yet these artists have managed to establish lively artistic traditions and influence younger generations to create. Self-Taught Genius features a variety of objects including textiles and needlework, ceramics, sculptural and carved figures, drawings, paintings, decorated furniture, and more, dating from the 18th century to the present.
Organized by the American Folk Art Museum, Self-Taught Genius was brought to the Saint Louis Art Museum by Melissa Wolfe, curator of American art.
