St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland
*Sorry about the shakiness in the beginning and my lil Dr. Who joke towards the end ;)
Recently Joe and I went to St. Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. The architecture is amazing and incredibly detailed. Entry is free, but the recommended donation is £3. If you’d like to take photographs or video you need to obtain a £2 photo permit. (Note that this doesn’t apply to Weddings. Wedding photography is only allowed if you got married in the Cathedral).
Fun Fact: the “Cathedral” is actually a church since no Bishop sits there anymore.
The St. Giles Cathedral was named after St. Giles the patron saint of Edinburgh, cripples, and lepers. It was founded in the 12th century, but the Thistle Chapel was added in 1911 for Knights by order of the Queen. The gorgeous stained glass was added in the late 19th century to replace the leaded windows. There are tombs within the Cathedral for the Marquis of Argyll and the Marquis of Montrose. You can also do a rooftop tour for views of the Royal Mile for £6 per person with a group of up to 4 people.
The Cathedral is open all year round for visitors except for around New Years and Christmas. During Summer (May through September) the hours are Monday through Friday 9 am -7 pm, Saturday 9 am-5 pm and Sunday for services. Winter hours are Monday through Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday for services. During the week they also have a 10 minute service at noon daily.
St. Giles Cathedral also has a gift shop and café. For more information please check out their website.

Thistle Chapel St Giles Cathedral Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland video of The Thistle Chapel in St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Thistle Chapel is the chapel of The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Scotland's foremost Order of Chivalry. The chapel was built in 1911 to designs by Robert Lorimer, at the south-east corner of the church. It is a small, but exquisite, chapel with carved and painted fittings of extraordinary detail. The Order, which was founded by James VII in 1687, consists of the monarch and 16 knights. The knights are the personal appointment of the crown, and are normally Scots who have made a significant contribution to national or international affairs.

An Ohio Choir Brings Edinburgh’s St. Giles’ Cathedral to Life
Hello from Edinburgh! I’m in Scotland’s most important church: St. Giles’ Cathedral. This place is filled with Scottish history and pride — and today, it’s also filled with the sounds of a visiting choir from America (Capriccio Columbus, from Ohio).
Edinburgh is packed with tourists who all seem to stick to the touristy zones. This clip illustrates how to fill your days with fun travel memories. You just need to take a few steps away from the crowds, know the context of what you’re looking at, and take advantage of local information — so you’re there when the choir sings (or for whatever is slated to happen).

Drive Through The City All The Way To St Giles' Cathedral Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of a cloudy morning road trip drive through the City all the way to St Giles' Cathedral on ancestry visit to Edinburgh. St Giles' Cathedral, on the Royal Mile, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is the principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh. The church has been one of Edinburgh's religious focal points for approximately 900 years. The present church dates from the late 14th century, though it was extensively restored in the 19th century. Today it is sometimes regarded as the Mother Church of Presbyterianism. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Giles, who is the patron saint of Edinburgh, as well as of cripples and lepers, and was a very popular saint in the Middle Ages. It is the Church of Scotland parish church for part of Edinburgh's Old Town.
