Striking St Giles Church at Tetsworth, Oxfordshire
The detached rocket-like Bell Tower make the exterior view very striking. Once you pass the through the Bell Tower entrance the actual interior is also very striking but in a way difficult to describe it seems much too utilitarian and solid. You' should see it for yourself.
St. Giles was originally Saxon. Much of the previous building was largely rebuilt in the 12th century and further additions were made in the 13th and 15th centuries. In 1855 John Peers controversially demolished the old Church (drawing exists) which had considerable historical interest and had it rebuilt. The architecture is very solid (Pevnser called it clumsy). Tetsworth itself is built on a hill with very windy narrow streets a little reminiscent of a Devon village. Unfortunately the M40 passes very close to village. Access the village via the old A40.
