Prison Island | Noogoon | Saint Helena Island Queensland Australia
Saint Helena is located in Moreton Bay just out from Brisbane Queensland. The Cat O Nine Tails tour sets off from Manly Queensland. In the 19th century St Helena Island was a quarantine station which became one of the most profitable prisons in Queensland history. The island was used to house prisoners and staff for 65 years. Many of those involved in the 1891 Australian shearers' strike were imprisoned there along with murderers and bushrangers.

The Escape - David McIntyre + Henry Craig (Birdcage of the Bay: St Helena Island Prison)
One of the biggest escape panics during the years St Helena Prison was operational was when two prisoners, Henry Craig and David McIntyre escaped from the hospital.
Repeat offenders Henry Craig and David McIntyre understood prison systems and planned their escape well. Arranging to be in the less secure hospital, they broke out at 4am and hid in the Tailor's Shop roof. For 11 days they ‘suffered greatly’ from heat and thirst while all of Australia was on alert. Finally they crept out at night to the boatshed, where neither boat was able to be launched. Defeated, they turned themselves in having never left the island.

The St Helena Stockade contains so many incredible stories from the prisoners and the warders who lived and worked there. Birdcage of the Bay: St Helena Island Prison invites guests to step into the 'Birdcage', the name given to the visitor box on the island, to experience stockade and life on the island.
Birdcage of the Bay: St Helena Island Prison is a free exhibition at Queensland State Archives, on display until September 2019.

The Wild Scotchman - James McPherson (Birdcage of the Bay: St Helena Island Prison)
A Queensland bushranger – ‘The Wild Scotchman.’
There were many sides to James McPherson. Known also as ‘The Wild Scotchman,’ and ‘Alpin McPherson,’ he began his Queensland bushranging career in violent fashion towards Richard Willis in March 1864, where he:
“feloniously did make an assault, and put him in bodily fear of his life; and three cabbage tree hats, two pairs of riding pants, one pair of boots, one gun, one crimean shirt, one bottle of whisky, and fourteen pounds of flour … did steal, take, and carry away. “
Whilst held on a boat for the upcoming trial, he wriggled out of the handcuffs and escaped, heading towards Gayndah. From November 1865 he went on a spree, robbing 6 mail coaches and 4 individuals.
Despite this, he was known during mail robberies to considerately fold up personal letters that contained no money and return them to their envelopes, was polite and ‘always kept his word.’ His humour was shown when he posted useless cheques amounting to £1700 back to His Excellency Sir George Bowen. He was finally captured on the 30th March 1866.
