PAHIYAS FESTIVAL 2019, LUCBAN QUEZON
The Season of Festivals is celebrated on the merry month of May. One extravagant festival that everyone is excited to see is the Pahiyas Festival in Quezon Province, which is celebrated on the 15th of May. Quezon, formerly known as Tayabas, is the second largest province in the Southern Tagalog region. The Pahiyas festival is simultaneously celebrated in the towns of Tayabas and Sariaya? Nevertheless, people go to Lucban because of its extravagant preparations which by tradition started during the 16th century as a way of thanksgiving for the peoples bountiful harvest. ????
The Pahiyas festival transforms the small towns of Quezon province from ordinary to exquisite sight. Originally a pagan harvest festival, it is now commemorated in honor of San Isidro Labrador the patron saint of farmers, peasants, laborers used to be a farmer in Madrid. According to legend, white oxen magically plowed his fields whenever he went to church. After being colonized by Spain, the legend was passed on to the Philippines. On the other hand, he was the venerated patron saint of agriculture in Mexico who was called upon by people to ensure the abundant supply of water and fertility of the land.????
Pahiyas is a festival that takes a long time to prepare and celebrated only for a short period. One of the much anticipated sights to see is the colorful decoration of houses made from different fruits, vegetables, and kipings. The people of Quezon believed that the practice started when farmers offered foods at the foot of Mount Banahaw. The ritual changed over time and the food offerings was brought to the church. In the old times, farmers brought all their harvest to the church for blessing. They believed that this ritual was essential because they were told that failure to do so could bring deprivation, dearth and misfortune to the town. Later on, the farmers received more blessings and their harvests were bountiful. The Lucban church, known to be the oldest church in the town, soon became the place where the pahiyas festival was held.???????????????? #pahiyasfestival2019 #lucbanquezon #morningride #motorcycle #longride #sanisidrolabrador #sidetrip
St. Louis Bishop of Toulouse Parish Church, Lucban, Quezon
The bucolic town of Lucban, Quezon, at the foot of the mystical Mt. Banahaw, has long been known for its cool breeze; its pilgrimage destination, Kamay ni Hesus Shrine; its native food, such as longganisa, Pansit Lukban, hardinera, embotido, among others; its colorful Pahiyas, a harvest festival in May in honor of St. Isidore, patron saint of farmers and laborers, and; its annual crowd-drawer, the San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish Church.
But the 419-year old parish church, which stands along La Purisima Concepcion St. in the Poblacion area, is more than just the venue where the Pahiyas Festival starts.
A Roman Catholic parish church that is under the Diocese of Lucena, it goes way back to the 1500s. Two Franciscan priests, Fr. Juan Portocarrero de Plasencia and Fr. Diego de Oropesa de San Jose, who are also known as the Apostles of Laguna and Tayabas, established the visita of Lucban in 1578.
But it does not take a History major to perceive the years this parish church has been through; one only has to look at its beautifully aged and faded walls, the weeds growing in its niches, its arched doors and stained-glass windows, and its three-tiered bell tower topped with a weather vane.
Only in the Philippines will you find churches jampacked on Sundays and important feasts. Many cathedrals in Europe which were once deserted museum pieces are now filled by Filipino OFWs. We are church-bound from womb to tomb.
If you are planning a visit, you can ride a bus going to Lucena Grand Terminal from Pasay City. From there, you can ride a bus or a jeepney to Lucban, Quezon. Just tell the driver to drop you off the nearest place to reach the church. You can also reach them through (042) 540-3040 at the Parochial Office or (042) 540-2870 at the Rectory.

PHILIPPINES: SAINT SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR CELEBRATIONS
Tagalog/Nat
In the Bulacan province in the Philippines the population celebrated the day of their patron saint in a very unique way on Thursday.
In a town where farming is the main source of livelihood, carabaos - otherwise known as the water buffalo - were the main attraction at the celebrations.
The animal is important to the farming community and for generations has been paraded through the streets to pay homage to Saint San Isidro Labrador.
The people of Pulilan village gathered outside the local church on Thursday to celebrate the day of their patron Saint San Isidro Labrador.
Every year hundreds of carabaos are paraded through the streets to the village church.
To pay their respects to the patron saint, the carabaos are made to kneel when they approach the church premises.
This year, the day has a special meaning to the farmers and their carabaos.
The El Nino weather phenomenon has left the region without rain.
But on the day of Saint San Isidro de Labrador, the rains miraculously came, just before the celebrations began.
Far from deterring the celebrations the rain brought the public out onto the streets.
The kneeling of the carabaos in front of the church has been a tradition that has lived from generation to generation.
SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog)
Almost fifty percent of the carabaos that are brought here are kneeling to honor our patron saint San Isidro Labrador in front of the church. It is a sign of respect similar to us Christians that when we pass by a church, we do a sign of the cross, so it's the same for the carabaos.
SUPER CAPTION: Leonardo Javier, Hermano Mayor, Pulilan Kneeling Carabao Festival
Carabao owners take their time to prepare the animals for this event.
They make sure they eat properly and get a good wash in the river several days before the parade to ensure the animals look their best on the big day.
