Song for Greenock
I was born in Chilbolton, which is in the county of Hampshire England. My Dad was royal navy and was stationed up in the Inverclyde area when he met my mum at a dance. Nine or ten months later I arrived, and the rest is History.
I spent the first five years of my life in Greenock and never knew my English Grandparents. Apart from my Dad being English, all I’ve ever known is my Scottish heritage. And, so it’s the songs and heritage of Scotland that I grew up with.
We emigrated to New Zealand when I was five, and then my Mothers Parents joined us.
My Nana has been a huge influence in my life. She was always a “God-fearing” woman, and she did impart her faith to me, and, a desire to know and be right with God.
I grew up listening to Scottish music; “the Alexander Brothers”, “Andy Stewart”, and of course, Billy Connolly.
There were also the rebellious songs of the Orange Lodge and the telling of the stories of conflict between the orange and the green that my Grandfather always embellished with humorous antics, being a protestant, and, growing up in that environment, I suppose it's what they were exposed to. But, that aside, My Scottish Mother married an Englishman and now all is well.
So, in 2019, My Wife and I returned to Scotland and visited Edinburgh and Inverness (to look for Nessie) but most importantly, Greenock, the home-town of my Mother and Grandparents.
I walked the street that my Grandmother talked of (Lynedoch Street), and her vivid memories of the German Bombers flying low overhead up that street to bomb the Tait & Lyal sugar refinery on Drumfrochar Road.
I visited the dock-yards and tried to imagine my Grandfather’s daily work-life as a fitter and turner at John Hasties & Co, where they made steering gear for the shipping industry in Inverclyde and Port Glasgow.
On my return to New Zealand, I realized that Scotland and Greenock were a significant part of who I am as a person, and a fresh approach to my music was birthed.
• The Song for Greenock is an acknowledgement of Greenock’s former economic success, its deep historical connectedness with God and a message of hope for it’s future, despite having suffered major economic down-sizing over the past few decades.

Scottish Government Reception for Catholic Schools at Edinburgh Castle
Last night the Catholic Church in Scotland was honoured to be invited to a reception organised by the Scottish Government at a windy Edinburgh Castle.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney MSP led tributes to Catholic Education on behalf of the Scottish Government as well as words from Archbishop Tartaglia and the Papal Nuncio to Great Britain Archbishop Edward Adams.
The highlight of the night for many was the wonderful musical
performances from St Ambrose HS Coatbridge and Notre Dame HS Greenock.

Pre-1837, George Washington Coffin established a bell foundry in Cincinnati to cast bells and other brass & bronze items. The main foundry was called G.W. Coffin Co., and the bell portion of the foundry was called The Buckeye Bell Foundry. This foundry may have been the successor to the Riga Furnace in Salisbury, Connecticut founded by Holley & Coffin in 1810.
Around 1856, his son, C.A. Coffin operated the foundry. CA Coffin specialized in riverboat bells for the Ohio River boats. The CA Coffin Bell Foundry bells were very ornate with elaborately decorated mounting hardware. Most Mississippi River paddle wheel boats sported a CA Coffin bell. Rumor was that CA Coffin used a metal mix of silver and copper for riverboat bells. (Normal bronze is 20% tin and 80% copper.)
The Buckeye Foundry Bells cast by the CA Coffin Bell Foundry were primarily supplied to churches. In 1865, The Buckeye Bell Foundry was purchased by E.W.Vanduzen and C.T. Tift, and moved to 164 East Second Street. The foundry operated under their control from 1865 to 1891. Under their leadership, the foundry was very prolific. Vanduzen & Tift engineered their bell mounting in a very unique design: A 4” to 5” opening was made in the top of the bell. A pair of cast iron disks gripped this opening, forming the hanging method & yoke connection. The bell profile was modified from that used by C.A. Coffin, thus improving the musical quality.
In 1894, E.W. Vanduzen bought out his partner, changing the incorpated name to The E.W. Vanduzen Co., Inc.; The Buckeye Bell Foundry. The foundry officially closed in 1950. (All bell foundries were forced to close for WWII in 1939, and never reopened.)
The 1984 catalog claims only pure copper & East India tin are “combined with proper acoustic proportions in the shape of the Bell, guarantees a good, full, and clear tone.”
The Buckeye Bell Foundry operated, under various ownership from pre-1837 to 1950.
