St Mary's Parish Anglican Church Tombs Graves Watford Hertfordshire Heritage

St Mary’s Church is Grade I listed and is the oldest building in the Borough of Watford in the Church Street, Watford, WD18 0EG



It is an ancient and architecturally interesting building, some parts of it dating back to around 1230, with several extensions built and refurbishments completed since then. Today there is also an adjoining Church Centre, constructed in the late 1970s, which provides accommodation for some of our church activities.

Watford Borough Council was awarded a grant of £80,300 by the Heritage Lottery Fund towards a project to help restore a number of chest tombs in St Mary’s Churchyard.

The tombs that have been restored date from between 1725, the Isaac Finch Tomb and 1867 when John Dyson was buried in the Dyson Tomb.

GEORGE EDWARD DONEY GRAVESTONE
This grave is of national significance, and represents a notable aspect of the social history of the town. The headstone marks the grave of a black man who was born in Gambia in West Africa. He was sold into slavery in Virginia, USA before starting work as a servant to the Earls of Essex on the Cassiobury Estate, for whom he worked for 44 years.

He was buried in the St Mary’s Church Graveyard in 1809 and we know from the parish registers that he had also been christened at St Mary’s Church 35 years earlier, in 1774.

At first worship took place in a building which later became the Church hall when the fine new Church was largely completed in 1913.
Two people of vision and energy were mainly responsible for this initiative. Canon Walter Littlebury was charged, as a young man, with the job of starting this new Christian Community. This he did, and stayed to consolidate this work until almost the time of his retirement in the 1940′s. Alice (“Mildred”) Schreiber, a well-to-do, socially minded lady was enthusiastic that a new Church be built, and, with her forceful personality, encouraged others to set up Christian work in West Watford.

There's me minding my own business on a Saturday evening, watching TV, and I see 4 lights ahead of me in the sky after a thunderstorm. I run over to the window and grab my iPhone and start recording. I believe this is the first ever capture of 4 lightning balls on video in one shot! The picture quality isn't great, but you can just make out the tree line in the background! Pretty cool for the UK, unless you believe in UFO's of course....

Funeral of Bradley John in Aberavon and Margam Crematorium, Wales, UK

Queen guitarist Brian May joined mourners at the funeral of a Bradley John, who killed himself after being bullied St John Lloyd Roman Catholic school in Llanelli, south Wales.
The young horse rider was found hanged in the school toilets at by his younger sister Danielle
Their father, Byron John, 53, asked the local riding community to wear their smart hunting gear at Bradley's funeral which took place at Aberavon Beach Hotel and then at Margam Crematorium in south Wales, UK.
Mr John said: 'I wanted to give him the best send off I could.
The rock star had become friendly with the hunting-mad family and gone on cruelty-free hunts with them.
