The History Of The Mysterious Hanging Cages Of This Medieval Church
The history of the mysterious hanging cages of this medieval church. We take a look at why there are cages hanging above this medieval church.
In Germany is a church called the St. Lambert’s and if you happen to look towards the top of it, you will see something that looks out of place. Here there is three large cages big enough to hold people in. Although some people are aware they are there, many don't know the history behind them.
The story of these cages goes back to the 16th century...

St. Lambert's church in Münster was built between 1375 and 1450. It is best known for of three iron cages in which the bodies of Anabaptist leader Jan Matthys and his lieutenants were exhibited in 1535 after their torture and execution. This was the last episode of so-called Münster Rebellion.
Jan Matthys was a charismatic Anabaptist leader in Haarlem. In 1534, an Anabaptist insurrection took control of Münster, the capital city of the Holy Roman Empire's Prince-Bishopric of Münster. John of Leiden, a Dutch Anabaptist, and a group of local merchants, summoned Matthys to come. Matthys identified Münster as the 'New Jerusalem', and on January 5, 1534, a number of his disciples entered the city and introduced adult baptism. Reformer Bernhard Rothmann apparently accepted 'rebaptism' that day, and well over 1000 adults were soon baptized.
They declared war on Franz von Waldeck, its expelled prince-bishop, who besieged the fortified town. In April 1534 on Easter Sunday, Matthys, who had prophesied God's judgment to come on the wicked on that day, made a sally forth with twelve followers, under the idea that he was a second Gideon, and was cut off with his entire band. He was killed, dismembered and his head stuck on a pike. Later that evening, his genitals were nailed to the city door.
The 25-year old John of Leiden was subsequently recognized as Matthys' religious and political successor, justifying his authority and actions by the receipt of visions from heaven. His authority grew, eventually proclaiming himself to be the successor of David and adopting royal regalia, honors and absolute power in the new 'Zion'. Meanwhile, most of the residents of Münster were starving as a result of the year-long siege.
After lengthy resistance, the city was taken by the besiegers on June 24, 1535 and John of Leiden and several other prominent Anabaptist leaders were captured and imprisoned. In January 1536 John of Leiden, Bernhard Knipperdolling and one more prominent follower, Bernhard Krechting, were tortured and executed in the marketplace of Münster. Their bodies were exhibited in cages, which hung from the steeple of St. Lambert's Church. The bones were removed later, but the cages hang there still.

Münster is a city in western Germany. It’s known for the 13th-century St. Paulus Dom cathedral, built in the Gothic and Romanesque styles. Prinzipalmarkt square is framed by gabled houses, the Gothic city hall and late medieval St. Lamberti Church. The gardens of baroque Schloss Münster palace include greenhouses of the Botanical Garden. The Pablo Picasso Art Museum features a collection of the painter’s lithographs.
There are some 500,000 bicycles in Münster – and that's just one example of the exuberance found in this captivating city, one of the most appealing between Cologne and Hamburg. It's historical centre was rebuilt after WWII and features many architectural gems. Yet Münster is not mired in nostalgia. Its 50,000 students keep the cobwebs out and civic pride is great – the town's main cultural treasures have enjoyed ambitious renovations and enhancements. Sampling the slew of lively pubs and restaurants alone warrants at least an overnight stop here.
A historic university city, Münster is the capital of Westphalia and has a skyline shaped by the Romanesque and Gothic towers of its medieval churches. For hundreds of years up to 1801 the city was ruled by a Catholic Prince-Bishopric. This dominion was only briefly interrupted by an Anabaptist rebellion, which was crushed in brutal fashion by a siege and grisly execution of its leaders who were left to rot in cages over the Prinzipalmarkt square.
The Old Town suffered during the Second World War, but its limestone Renaissance and Gothic facades were meticulously reconstructed afterwards. Many of these buildings resonate with world-changing history, like the Historical City Hall where the Peace of Westphalia was signed in 1648, redrawing the map of Western Europe.
Münster is situated on the river Aa, approximately 15 kilometres (9 miles) south of its confluence with the Ems in the Westphalian Bight, a landscape studded with dispersed settlements and farms, the so-called Münsterland. The Wolstonian sediments of the mountain ridge called Münsterländer Kiessandzug cross the city from north to south. The highest elevation is the Mühlenberg in the northwest of Münster, 97 metres above sea level. The lowest elevation is at the Ems with 44 m above sea level. The city centre is 60 m above sea level, measured at the Prinzipalmarkt in front of the historic city hall.
The centre can be subdivided into historically evolved city districts whose borders are not always strictly defined, such as

Kreuzviertel

Dom zu Münster (2/10/11)
The Münster Cathedral. In the 1530's, after the Anabaptist Rebellion, the leaders were captured and tortured to death. Their bodies were displayed in the cages you see at 0:33.
This was the highlight of Münster. I wasn't too impressed with the city, as this was the highlight. Might have something to do with the city being the bicycle capital of Germany, and the entire city seems to be built around that aspect.

Catholic History: The Munster Rebellion (1533-1534)
In 1533 the city of Munster in Germany is taken over by Anabaptists or Fifth Monarchy Men. They destroyed anything reminiscent of the Roman Catholic Church. They authorized polygamy and rape and orgies became commonplace in the streets of the city. This is that story.

Prophets of the Munster Rebellion - Disasters and Tragedies - One Minute History
In the wake of Martin Luther’s Reformation, a ‘prophet’ named Jan Matthijs calls on members of the Anabaptist movement to flock to Munster for the second coming of Christ.
After failing to get rid of the cultists, the Catholic prince bishop returns to lay siege to the city. God tells Jan Matthijs that he would not be harmed, so he rides out to face the army. The ‘prophet’s’ head is put on a spike and his genitals are nailed to the city gate. Soon after, his disciple Jan van Leiden proclaims himself the ‘real prophet’, restoring the town’s faith and leading them into further peril. Van Leiden mandates polygamy, kills his challengers and abolishes the right to own property. Under siege for over a year, famine breaks out and many die of starvation. When the Prince Bishop retakes Munster, leaders of the rebellion are captured, tortured and killed, with their corpses placed in iron cages for all to see for 50 years. The cages still hang to this day.

5 WORST Executions in History
A brief history of Münster ,Germany
We look at its founding in the late 8th century to present day.
Places to see in ( Muenster - Germany ) Muenster Cathedral
Places to see in ( Muenster - Germany ) Muenster Cathedral
Münster Cathedral or St.-Paulus-Dom is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Münster in Germany, and is dedicated to St Paul. It is counted among the most significant church buildings in Münster and, along with the City Hall, is one of the symbols of the city.
The cathedral stands in the heart of the city, on a small hill called Horsteberg, which is encircled by the Roggenmarkt, Prinzipalmarkt und Rothenburg streets and by the Münstersche Aa river. This area, which also contains the Domplatz and surrounding buildings, was the old Domburg. Today the cathedral is the parish church for this area. West of the cathedral lies the bishop's palace and part of the old curia complex along with the current cathedral chapter.
The cathedral had two predecessors. The first cathedral (called the Ludgerus Dom, 805-1377) stood to the north of the current cathedral; the second cathedral was built in the tenth or eleventh century and was demolished during the construction of the third and current cathedral between 1225 and 1264. The imposing westwerk with its nearly identical towers was built as part of the second cathedral around 1192 and was incorporated into the current building. As a result, the cathedral is a mixture of styles, combining the Romanesque westwerk, old choir and west towers with the Gothic nave, transepts, high choir and ring of chapels.
Each of the cathedral buildings served as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Munster, but each also had additional functions, at least at times. The original Carolingian cathedral was also the Collegiate church for a cloister founded by Liudger, with the monks living under the rule of Chrodegang. Each cathedral served as a parish church, originally for the whole of Munster. As a result of the foundation of further parish churches, the parish district of the cathedral was reduced to the Old Domburg and Domimmunität in 1090. In the first half of the thirteenth century, the Church of St Jacobi was built on the Domplatz. With the completion of this church, the cathedral, which was then under construction, lost its function as a parish church entirely. Since the demolition of St Jacobi in 1812, the cathedral regained its role as parish church for the Old Domburg and Domimmunität.
The cathedral contains the tomb of the former Bishop of Munster, Clemens August Graf von Galen who became a Cardinal shortly before his death in 1946 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005.
