Lyvennet Cafe
Visit the new Lyvennet Cafe @ Maulds Meaburn Village Institute
Summer Sundays from 17 May to 6 September.
10.30am to 2.30pm
Hearty breakfasts, light lunches, coffee and cake are all on the menu at the new summer Sunday café at Maulds Meaburn Village Institute.
Launching on 17 May, the Lyvennet Café will serve up homemade food using Cumbrian produce every Sunday until early September.
“The idea behind the café is to bring people together to enjoy a relaxing Sunday, while raising funds towards the Institute’s running costs,” said MMVI chairman John Wood. “The café will also cater for the many cyclists and walkers who pass through Maulds Meaburn, and will hopefully encourage others to come and discover this picturesque village.”
Opt for a full English breakfast or enjoy baguettes, rolls, omelettes, quiches and salads.
One of the highlights on the menu will be volunteer chef Tim Smith’s burgers in a homemade brioche roll with thrice-cooked chips. The café’s cakes and ice cream are all homemade, too, and a selection of wines and beers will be on offer. There’ll be packed lunches available for any walkers and cyclists who are keen to keep moving.
The Institute has invested in new café-style tables and chairs so that customers have the option to dine outdoors when the weather allows, looking over the heart of Maulds Meaburn, which author and journalist Hunter Davies reputedly described as “one of the most beautiful villages in the country”.
“We’re very grateful to Eden District Council for a grant to help us get the café up and running, through the Eden Community Fund,” John said. “We want to see the Institute used to its full potential as a hub for the community, and we’ve been steadily expanding our programme of activities. Food events have always proved popular, and that inspired us to trial the Lyvennet Café this summer.”
The Institute is also serving up a helping of local art for customers to enjoy and perhaps even buy.
“We’ve teamed up with a few artists from our area to display their work, which will hopefully help them reach new audiences while showcasing for visitors the talent we have locally,” John said.

ANZAC Day 2015. Wreath laying at the statue of John Simpson Kirkpatrick, 'The Man with the Donkey'. Jack was born and went to school in South Shields and left its harbour in 1909 after his father's death. He ended up in Australia and when WWI broke out in August 1914 he joined the Australian Army which he thought would enable him to return to his family in England. His detachment of the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance was sent to Gallipoli and he saved many soldier's lives over a 21 day period. He commandeered a donkey and used it to transport injured soldiers from the front to the casualty clearing stations, He undertook tasks over and above the duty of a stretcher bearer to save his comrades. He was killed by a sniper on the 19th May 1915 and was buried in Beach Cemetery with full military honours. Jack became an Australian legend, but is still remembered in his home town of South Shields. A service is held annually at his statue and is attended by many of the town's people and children from local schools.
