Places of England: Bridgnorth (Season 2: Episode 7)
For this 7th episode of the 2nd season of the 'Places of England' series, we will be looking at the big town of Bridgnorth in central Shropshire. I will take a look at its special landmarks, such as Bridgnorth Castle, St. Leonard's church, St. Mary Magdalene church, Severn Valley Railway, etc. along with looking at its generic buildings too.
England 2002 Part 5 - Bridgnorth
We leave the ferry at Holyhead and travel to Bridgnorth so that Wendy can research her ancestors. We stay at the Parlors Hall Hotel. I visit Iron Bridge, the home of the Industrial Revolution. I then spend the day at Bridgnorth, visiting the Funicular, St Leonard's Church and the Severn River Railway.

Places to see in ( Bridgnorth - UK )
Bridgnorth is a town in Shropshire, England. The Severn Valley splits it into a High Town and Low Town, the upper town on the right bank and the lower on the left bank of the River Severn. Bridgnorth is named after a bridge over the River Severn, that was built further north than an earlier bridge at Quatford.
Bridgnorth's town walls were initially constructed in timber between 1216 and 1223; murage grants allowed them to be upgraded to stone between the 13th and 15th centuries. By the 16th century, the antiquarian John Leland reported them in ruins and of the five gates, only one survives today.
Bridgnorth is home to a funicular railway that links the high and low towns, the Castle Hill Railway, which is the steepest and only inland railway of its type in England. Additionally, within the High Town is Bridgnorth railway station on the Severn Valley Railway, which runs southwards to Kidderminster. The ruins of Bridgnorth Castle, built in 1101, are present in the town. Due to damage caused during the English Civil War, the castle is inclined at an angle of 15 degrees.
High Town is dominated by two Church of England churches. St. Mary's Church, a church built in the classic style of the late 18th century, was designed by Thomas Telford; and is still used for worship. St. Leonard's was formerly collegiate, and Bridgnorth was a Royal Peculiar until 1856. It was subsequently largely rebuilt but is no longer used for regular worship. It has many community uses and is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
Bishop Percy's House on the Cartway was built in 1580 by Richard Forster and has been a Grade 1 listed building since 18 July 1949. It was one of the few properties of its type to survive the great fire of Bridgnorth in April 1646, and was the birthplace of Thomas Percy (Bishop of Dromore), author of ‘Reliques of Ancient English Poetry’. Other notable buildings in the town are the 17th century Bridgnorth Town Hall, a half-timbered building, and a surviving town gate the Northgate which houses the museum. Daniel's Mill, a well known watermill is situated a short distance along the River Severn from Bridgnorth.
Bridgnorth today is closely related to the towns of Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury. It is a traditional market town which retains its distinct position as a lively weekend trading settlement. Bridgnorth grew initially as a market town at the centre of a system of local radial roads linking it with more rural, smaller settlements. Many of these roads crossed Bridgnorth at the same point on the High Street as where the town hall now stands. Bridgnorth is connected to Shrewsbury by the A458 road, to Telford by the A442 road and Wolverhampton via the A454 road.
Bridgnorth has a bypass road, construction of which was started in 1982, and which now serves to relieve the town centre of the congestion it was once plagued by. Currently the closest towns with active railway stations on the National Rail network are Telford and Wolverhampton. However, Bridgnorth does still have a station on an active heritage line, the Severn Valley Railway. Bridgnorth station was not the northern terminus of this line when built, but the main intermediate station, being 18¼ miles from Hartlebury and 22½ miles from Shrewsbury.
The Bridgnorth Cliff Railway (also known as the Bridgnorth Funicular Railway or Castle Hill Railway), is a funicular railway which has operated in Bridgnorth for over 100 years. The line links the lower part of High Town to the upper part. The bottom entrance is adjacent to the River Severn while the top is adjacent to the ruins of Bridgnorth Castle.

Wartime Childhood
Produced as part of the `Conflict & Memory` animated films project which took place in five Shropshire schools, England, from January to April 2006. Wartime Childhood was made by pupils at three Primary Schools in Shropshire, England. St. Lawrences C E Primary School, Church Stretton; St. Leonards Primary School, Bridgnorth; Coleham Primary School, Shrewsbury. The project aimed for WWII veterans and young people to meet and share memories and thoughts concerning the conflict, utilising Shropshire war memorials to explore some of the issues surrounding conflict and local history. The Making Of Conflict & Memory
Conflict and Memory, which took place from January April 2006, has been a very exciting and rewarding collaboration between artist film maker Dave Brunskill, Shropshire County Council Arts Service, Shropshire Archives, five schools in the county and some local veterans of WWII.
The project aimed for WWII veterans and young people to meet and share memories and thoughts concerning the conflict, utilising Shropshire war memorials to explore some of the issues surrounding conflict and local history. Inspirational monuments in Shropshire include:
• Severn Valley Railway train which operated in Persia and Egypt with the Corps of Royal Engineers, dedicated in 1986 to the memory of all British military railwaymen who gave their lives on active service
• unusual memorial in Ruyton-XI-Towns in the form of a cave cut into solid rock, recently listed by English Heritage
• clay figure of a soldier in Stokesay churchyard; and the statue of a soldier throwing a grenade in Castle Gardens in Bridgnorth.
Other memorials include hospital beds, a bridge at Coalport, crosses, lych gates, memorial tablets in town and village halls, and pubs and clubs all over the county. The majority of these relate to the First World War and are tangible examples of what has been described as the biggest public art project in history, where thousands of war memorials were erected throughout the country.
Schools worked with internationally renowned artist film maker Dave Brunskill to create a series of animated films. Due to Daves unique skills and experience the project grew from being quite open ended in terms of artistic outcome at the planning stage, into a unique, contemporary digital memorial of Shropshires War, made by Shropshire school pupils themselves. The schools involved were
• St. Lawrences C E Primary School, Church Stretton
• Bridgnorth Endowned School
• St. Leonards Primary School, Bridgnorth
• Coleham Primary School, Shrewsbury
• Wakeman School, Shrewsbury
The pupils have been involved in learning a whole range of skills during the making of these films, including extensive research into the subject, talking to
friends, relatives, looking at websites, visiting museums, war memorials and other sites, script writing, storyboard design, soundtrack recording, artwork production, stop frame animation, camerawork and documentary making.
A range of exciting visits was arranged including RAF Cosford, Port Sunlight, to see the remarkable village war memorial, Brignorths memorial next to the castle and the Severn Valley Railway, to see the train dedicated as a war memorial

Walks in England: The Crowhurst Yew in Sussex
I am out with the lovely Julia in search of another tree. This time it is the other Crowhurst Yew, the one in East Sussex. Incredibly, this yew is in the church yard of a church with the same name and in a village with the same name as the one in Surrey.

Loamhole Dingle Nature Walk at Ironbridge - Part One
Continuing my exploration with Lee Proudfoot of Coalbrookdale and the early Iron masters at Ironbridge in Shropshire, today I take a delightful nature walk.
The circular trail takes you from Upper Furnace Pool through the beautiful woodland of Loamhole Dingle returning along the historic Ropewalk where industry once mixed with nature.
Loamhole Dingle is a wet, ancient semi-natural woodland consisting of mainly ash, alder, silver birch and hazel and a range of wild flowers
