Beckets Level Crossing
Two Class 171s in Southern livery cross this unnamed road heading to Rye and Appledore respectively. This crossing is just before the Kent/East Sussex border and is in the hamlet of Fairfield. I say hamlet with exaggeration. The name comes from the nearby Becket's Church and bridge although that name has three different spellings. The bridge is called Becket's, the farm is called Beckets, and this crossing is called Becketts. One of the barriers is slower than the other when raising. Because of the quiet nature of the location, the electrical equipment boxes next to the crossing on one side can be heard ticking when the amber light goes out and the barriers start to raise. The road up to it is dramatically raised in the middle on one side, which is due to bad road building, and the hedges are lined here with many different types of fruit. Although the line here is completely straight and has no visible faults at all, there are piles of gleaming rails on one side next to the tracks. There was a light drizzle at the time. Bloody drizzle.

Teen dies after fight outside middle school
A 13-year old girl from Attucks Middle School ended up on life support at Texas Children's Hospital two days after a fight off campus.
Kashala Francis' mother, Mamie Jackson, says her daughter told her she was attacked by two girls after school on Thursday, and that another girl later jumped in and kicked her in the head.
Jackson says when her daughter returned home Thursday afternoon, she had a bruise on her face, but insisted she was okay.
Saints Academy In Pre Season
SAINTS Academy are deep into their preparations for the new season and according to most it is the hardest ever.
Under the guidance of first team Strength and Conditioning Coach Matt Daniels, they have been hard at it since mid-November following a short break from the Australia Tour.
As usual the staff have mixed in some alternative sessions to the players' training schedules with visits to Sherdley Park and the annual sand dunes session just before Christmas.
And, as you can see from our video, the weather was certainly the worst for the long time with the full range of wind, sun, hail and torrential rain throughout the epic session.
Alongside the strength and conditioning work, the coaching team of Derek Traynor, Eric Chisnall, Paul Molyneux and Ste Leonard have been assisted by first team coaches Jamahl Lolesi and Kieron Cunningham in developing the young players' skills and tactical awareness.
Derek Traynor, Academy Head Coach, said: Pre-season has gone very well so far and the players have soaked up the valuable tips and advice from our colleagues in the first team.
In fact several of them are well placed to have a big season to push for future full time positions.
The next few weeks are vital in finalising our preparations for a successful season. We have a tough start with Warrington away but it will be exciting.

44871 - Black 5 - What a disaster !
Another day that didn’t quite go to plan...
I set off this morning to video the West Coast Railway Companies charter to York, headed up by black 5 steam loco 44871. Rather than visit my usual haunts I drove up to Holmegreen level crossing.
Just as I pulled up and got out of the car I could hear something coming that was under power. I knew that the 657H Langley Redlands train often ran on a Sunday, but wasn’t due to pass for another 5 minutes or so if it was actually running. Sure enough it was running and running 6 minutes early! – I just managed to get the camera powered up and running as it approached the crossing.
A few moments later 365534 leads the 1P17 Peterborough to London Kings Cross service with 91119 passing at the head of 1S10 Kings Cross to Edinburgh a few moments later. I was then set to record the 1Z42 charter to York.
In the distance you could see the smoke as it rounded the bend after passing through Arlesey station. A Grand Central 180, 1A81 Bradford to Kings Cross service sped through and this is when things went pare shaped! I wasn’t comfortable with my position, especially as some other guy also seemed to want my spot, so I pressed the record button to stop the camera just after the 180 passed, whilst I repositioned myself. Now either the button didn’t work, or I didn’t press it hard enough, but for whatever reason the camera continued to record whilst I sorted myself out. So then with the Black 5 coming into view I pressed the record button to start recording, which you guessed it, stopped the recording. I got a lovely slow zoom out, and pan as the Black five passed the crossing, and then pressed the record button once again to stop the recording... which actually started recording again, giving me nice images of the ground, my feet and railings! It wasn’t until I got to the car to take a look of the results that I realised it was still recording! – Gutted to say the least

Storm Ophelia unearths ancient human skeleton in Ireland
Storm Ophelia has unearthed what appears to be ancient human skeleton with some of its skin still intact after the ex-hurricane battered an Irish coastal walkway with huge waves. The remains could be up to a thousand years old and were discovered by a walker after ferocious seas eroded the coastal soil.Ophelia's 75mph (120 kph) winds lashed at the walkway for hours on Tuesday, eventually revealing what appears to be an ancient burial site.State Pathologist Marie Cassidy arrived at the scene yesterday and carried out an initial examination, suggesting the remains could be from the Iron Age, which began around 1,000 years ago.The body has now been taken to Dublin for a forensic investigation into how the person died and how old the remains are.The bones will be donated to Ireland's National Museum in Dublin once the investigation concludes.Archaeologist Maeve Sikora, an expert at the National Museum who helped to excavate the remains, told MailOnline: 'From where it was found, we can tell it clearly wasn't a recent burial.'The body was probably laid to rest in a stone-lined grave that was destroyed by erosion over the years.'It would have been a formal burial, with the arms placed by the side, which we can tell from the position the body was found in.'It could be up to a thousand years old but it is difficult to tell. We can't say with any certainty how old it is until we get a radiocarbon date.'The skeleton, which reportedly still has some skin attached, was found at Kilmore Quay in Wexford, Ireland, on Tuesday afternoon.County councillor Jim Moore said: 'People out walking discovered the remains on Tuesday afternoon. The area has been sealed off since then. 'It appears to be a grave, so in other words it is not a body that washed ashore.'The spot where the skeleton was found is named Forlorn Point. Mr Moore said: 'It is the closest point to the sea.It is very remote and it now throws up the question whether there are more burial grounds in the area.'The force of the storm sped up the rate of coastal erosion, revealing the body for the first time in what could be centuries.Mr Moore added: 'It is a very tidal area. Erosion is the reason this was found. It left the site exposed and that's how it was spotted.'A police spokesperson confirmed: 'At approximately 4.45pm on Tuesday people out walking at Forlorn Point, Kilmore Quay discovered skeletal remains.'Gardai were called and the services of the State Pathologists Office and a Forensic anthropologist were sought.'It was established that the remains were historical maybe from the Iron Age. The National Museum will take custody of the remains.'Storm Ophelia has swept across Britain and Ireland this week, bringing wind gusts of more than 75mph (120 kph).Three people died in Ireland Tuesday as it was hit by hurricane-force winds and 330,000 people were left without power overnight.Roofs were ripped off buildings and flights were forced to turn around. Scotland has faced 77mph (124kph) gusts and parts of its west coast are under flood warnings, while in England several trees were blocking the train line between Halifax and Bradford Interchange in West Yorkshire.

New Deal
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The New Deal was a series of programs, public work projects, financial reforms and regulations enacted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the United States between 1933 and 1936. It responded to needs for relief, reform and recovery from the Great Depression. Major federal programs included the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Civil Works Administration (CWA), the Farm Security Administration (FSA), the National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933 (NIRA) and the Social Security Administration (SSA). They provided support for farmers, the unemployed, youth and the elderly. The New Deal included new constraints and safeguards on the banking industry and efforts to re-inflate the economy after prices had fallen sharply. New Deal programs included both laws passed by Congress as well as presidential executive orders during the first term of the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The programs focused on what historians refer to as the 3 Rs: relief for the unemployed and poor, recovery of the economy back to normal levels and reform of the financial system to prevent a repeat depression. The New Deal produced a political realignment, making the Democratic Party the majority (as well as the party that held the White House for seven out of the nine presidential terms from 1933 to 1969) with its base in liberal ideas, the South, traditional Democrats, big city machines and the newly empowered labor unions and ethnic minorities. The Republicans were split, with conservatives opposing the entire New Deal as hostile to business and economic growth and liberals in support. The realignment crystallized into the New Deal coalition that dominated presidential elections into the 1960s while the opposing conservative coalition largely controlled Congress in domestic affairs from 1937 to 1964.
Peak District - Lathkill Dale & Magpie Mine Via Monyash
Ok - so this is my 4th attempt at a video and shot with the minimal of equipment.
In this video I thought I would try out a time-lapse whilst I walk a section of Lathkill Dale. Probably about 1200 pics in thisclip. Again, I mixed in some shots which kind of stabilises the overall video effect as I don’t have a tripod yet.
The GoPro (under £90 version!) is great in bright conditions but is not so good in poor light as well as this version cannot utilise a mike extension and the mike is not that cool unless you shout in the back of it. I think a great addition would be a Sony RX100 to get some non GoPro video and stills input, as well as some focus-pull effects which I think would work with the style I seem to be developing.. What I learn is that you cannot have enough pockets as well as you need to allow more time whist stopping to take shots and learn some history along the way!
In this video I used 2 new music tracks I created and the Magpie Mine section track (PeakSheepz) was created specifically with that mine in mind with the mix & B&W clips. It’s a rather doleful piece but I kind of like it now as it does fit the mine. As always - best listened to in HD on headphones with the sound turned up – preferably with good bass!
The walk
Another round trip of about 12 miles walk in which I discover the lead mine, Magpie Mine and I discover a little about its 300 year history. Some gruesome competitive tales lurked underground as miners tried to smoke each other out while nearby mine competitors were found hacking though the same vein - causing several deaths in the early 1800's.
The remains of Magpie Mine are probably the best example in the UK of a 19th. Century lead mine. The area's mining has a fascinating history spanning almost 300 years.
Continuing on through the village of Monyash, which is steeped in history itself dating back to the 11th century ~ the parish church of St Leonard’s dates back to the 12th century.
Monyash was an important lead mining centre for the High Peak and even had had its own Barmote Court, which sat at the Bull’s Head at Easter to settle mining disputes and to hear complaints of theft, trespass and grievances of lead miners. Judgements were made based on custom and precedent handed down over the years.
Moving on, I discover the most beautiful Lathkill Dale and its brilliant short but crystal clear Lathkill River. The source of this river would normally be from the Lathkill Head cave but in dryer conditions first appears further down the Dale starting from a tiny spring out of the ground and soon turns into a river complete with torrents and weirs along the way.
Then its back to Over Haddon car park via the tolling of the 1880 St Ann church bells - as heard in the video. The views from the graveyard are fantastic. The most famous gravestone ihere s that of Sir Maurice Oldfield, a former head of the MI6 and the sundial on the south wall is a must see.
