Edward Lloyd “Come, Margarita, Come Sullivan's The Martyr Of Antioch Come, Margarita, come
Edward Lloyd (1845-1927) sings “Come, Margarita, Come from Sir Arthur Sullivan's The Martyr Of Antioch. Margarita is the daughter of Callias. The soprano who created the role of Margarita was Emma Albani. Lloyd created the role of Olybius.
Sullivan's work is based on the 1822 epic poem by Henry Hart Milman, Dean of St. Paul's, about the martyrdom of St. Margaret of Antioch in the 3rd century.
We may be tempted to call this Gilbert and Sullivan since the libretto was adapted for the occasion by W. S. Gilbert. The Pirates of Penzance had premiered in London earlier in 1880.
To show appreciation, Sullivan gave Gilbert a silver cup inscribed W.S. Gilbert from his friend Arthur Sullivan. Leeds Festival 1880. The Martyr of Antioch.
Described as A Sacred Musical Drama, The Martyr of Antioch was composed for the Leeds Triennial Music Festival of 1880 and performed there for the first time on October 15, forming the first half of the program. It was followed by a performance of Beethoven's Mass in C and Schubert's Song of Miriam.
The aria is sung by Olybius. These lines precede the aria: Where is the crown and palm-like grace of all, / The sacred virgin Priestess, Margarita?
Come, Margarita, come, Come in thy zoneless grace, Take thine appointed place, And strike thy holy lyre of silver string. Come, Margarita, come. For this delay of thine, Thou wilt the fairer shine, Even as a late long-looked-for flower in Spring. Come, Margarita, come. For when her living lyre out sings, The shamed birds do fold their wings, And all upon whose ear it falls, Stand breathless as the listening walls, That, as they tower in space above, Themselves seem touched to light and love. Come, Margarita, come, Come, Margarita, come!
Edward Lloyd was one of the most celebrated tenors of his day. He rose to prominence following his performance in Bach’s St Matthew Passion at the 1871 Gloucester Three Choirs Festival, becoming the natural successor to Sims Reeves (1821-1900). Lloyd created the rôles of Olybius in Sullivan’s The Martyr of Antioch (Leeds, 1880) and Prince Henry in The Golden Legend (Leeds, 1886), also participating in Sullivan’s Philharmonic Society concerts on 22nd April 1885, 9th June 1887 and 25th June 1887. He later sang in the first performances of Parry’s Judith (Birmingham, 1888) and King Saul (Birmingham, 1894), Stanford’s Requiem (Birmingham, 1897) and Elgar’s The Light of Life (Worcester, 1896), King Olaf (Hanley, 1896), Caractacus (Leeds, 1898) and The Dream of Gerontius (Birmingham, 1900). Lloyd made many recordings between 1904 and 1911, including Come, Margherita, come from The Martyr of Antioch.

Story of St Margaret
11/3/2018 - Live Performance
My father was a sailor, I've been told
Crossed the ocean on a steamer, pulling lines and kicking coal
Pouring shovel after shovel to that Hades of the hold
And it fed his soul
And it fired in his soul
My mother was betrothed to a local man
His posture fair and simple, a worker of the land
But the unexpected visit from a tall American
Helped her understand
It made her understand
And a flower sprouted slowly where there was none before
That's the Story of St Margaret
It was a February evening, he was at the door
With a note of introduction from a distant shore
And news of friends and family in the second ward
And nothing more
Maybe something more
He carried golden stories of the overseas
After dinner speaking softly, hands folded on his knees
Sipping homemade spirits from the fruit of local trees
And the birds and the bees
The birds and the bees
And a flower found the sunlight where there was none before
That's the story of St Margaret
Now, the crater of the mountain cast a glare
And legends of the ancients hung heavy in the air
The promise of escaping was more than she could bear
It called her over there
It drew her over there
Was it for love, was it for freedom; I think you know
When she took my father's offer on the promise of a glow
And they married in the village, and again on banker's row
And a love grows
And a story grows
And a flower blooms in glory where there was none before
That's the story of St Margaret
That's the story of St Margaret

Lyrics:
Take my hand on a winter's day
Warm me up from the cold and gray
Take my veil when I try to hide
Tell me it's gonna be alright
It'll be alright
'Cause it's always been you
Always been you
To turn the tables like nobody else can do
It's always been you
Always been you
To turn the tables like nobody else can do
When you find that the shades are drawn
Give me light for the coming dawn
When I'm caught in a valley low
Give me wings so I can go
So I can go
'Cause it's always been you
Always been you
To turn the tables like nobody else can do
It's always been you
Always been you
To turn the tables like nobody else can do
It's always been you turning the tables...
