Amazing Grace in Buncrana Ireland
AMAZING GRACE PRE-SCREENING IN BUNCRANA
Monday March 5, 2007
Over 250 people attended the pre-screening of Amazing Grace in Buncrana, County Donegal on Monday March 5.
Hosted by the Mayor of Buncrana, Cllr Joe Doherty the event united politicians, church leaders, members of the business community and community leaders from Donegal and across the border in Northern Ireland.
One highlight came when Irish singer Moya Brennan sang the well-loved hymn, accompanied on the guitar by Mayor Doherty.
Amazing Grace is the story of Williberforce and his battle to abolish the trans-atlantic slave trade. The film also shows the vital role that John Newton played in encouraging Wilberforce to use his political influence for good.
As the first screening of film in the Republic of Ireland came to an end in St Mary's Cinema, Buncrana, there was a spontaneous round of applause. Enjoying the story, many also recognised the vital message of the film both within Ireland and across the world.
May-Lynn Chang, Director of Strategic Marketing for film makers Walden Media shared why she wanted the film to be shown in the North West of Ireland, What struck me was the heart of reconciliation. There is an opportunity here to work cross boundary, cross faith, cross border, cross political party and that is also the spirit of Wilberforce in terms of really wanting to make change.
Many of you come from different walks of life but what drives you is the hope for a future, the hope for a change. Ireland is very much a country that understands freedom and longs for peace.
Mike Mullins, Director of OM Ireland added, My dream, is that people from all over the world will come here to reflect on what it means to know amazing grace and that the Lake of Shadows (Lough Swilly) would be known as a place of hope, even a place of salvation for a wretch who found Christ.
Amazing Grace goes on general release across Ireland and the UK on March 23.

A City Stunned in Silence by musicbyjmck
An Audio / Visual piece, in memory of Ruth, Jodie-Lee, Sean, Mark & Evan.
Like many, I was deeply saddened by the tragedy which unfolded on Sunday the 20th of March, when a family of five lost their lives whilst at Buncrana Pier in Co. Donegal. I felt a sincere urge to try and help in some way. On Thursday, I felt honoured to play violin at the funeral service. It was there that I listened to Louise read aloud a beautiful poem, with words that resonated so very deep within me. After the service, I drove to Buncrana Pier to spend some time alone, reflecting on recent events. Whilst there, I witnessed a man and woman, with two young children, drop daffodils into the sea. I sat a little longer, watched the clouds begin to darken, said a prayer and then left.
Having made arrangements to meet my cousin in Co. Tyrone later that evening, I decided to have a quick go on the computer before leaving my home in Derry. Whilst browsing on social media, I noticed a picture of the poem that Louise had read earlier. As I sat reading, instantly, in my head I could hear a melody fit with the words. I began to sing aloud, which I then recorded. I had a very strong sense of urgency with this song. I wanted to have it ready before the end of the day, as a way of paying homage to Ruth, Jodie-Lee, Sean, Mark and Evan, as a 'final farewell' on the day they were buried.
'A City Stunned in Silence' does not have the silky smooth sound, such as that of a track professionally recorded in a 'proper studio', but I tried my very best to capture the message and emotion I felt compelled to create. I decided to embellish the song by adding my own 'Vocal Whistle' and Harmonies.
Next day I received an email from Karina Smith, the author of the poem. I also learned the poem was actually called Rest In Peace. I thanked her for her inspirational words. Karina has expressed an interest in my new group, the PRAYformers, so I hope to finally meet-up at St. Columbs Church, 32 Chapel Road, Derry City on Sunday the 3rd of April.
I decided to create this visual composition with the pictures from recent days. I sincerely hope this helps a City, stunned, in silence, to come to terms with such heartache and loss.
All proceeds from A City Stunned in Silence go towards Louise and baby Rionaghac-Ann

Buncrana Main Street, Inishowen Peninsula, Donegal
We have arrived at Buncrana on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way and also noted because this is 'Amazing Grace' country. We are out for a short exploratory walk along the main street. We have never visited before. Unfortuantely we do not have a lot of time. It would be great to come back here for longer as I know that we have missed a lot of things like churches beaches shoreline and sculptures.
Buncrana (/ˈbʌn.krænə/; Irish: Bun Cranncha, meaning foot of the (River) Crana) is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. It is beside Lough Swilly on the Inishowen peninsula, 23 kilometres (14 mi) northwest of Derry and 43 kilometres (27 mi) north of Letterkenny. In the 2016 census, the population was 6,785[1] making it the second most populous town in County Donegal, after Letterkenny, and the largest in Inishowen.
Buncrana is the historic home of the O'Doherty clan and originally developed around the defensive tower known as O'Doherty's Keep at the mouth of the River Crana. The town moved to its present location just south of the River Crana when George Vaughan built the main street in 1718.
The town was a major centre for the textile industry in County Donegal from the 19th century until the mid-2000s (decade).
Buncrana has strong connections to the O'Doherty clan, John Newtown, George Vaughan and Wolfe Tone.
When John Newton and his shipmates on The Greyhound found a haven in Lough Swilly on 8 April 1748 after a devastating Atlantic storm, he saw his survival as divine intervention, the answer to prayer. The refuge of the Swilly and Buncrana area laid a spiritual foundation for a reformed later life. In 1764 he became a Church of England clergyman and subsequently, as curate at Olney in Buckinghamshire, an anti-slavery activist and renowned hymnist famous for writing “Amazing Grace”.
We need to come back for a longer stay! So much to see!
In October 1905, Buncrana was the first town in County Donegal to receive electricity. It was generated at Swan Mill which continued to provide electricity for the town until September 1954 when Buncrana was brought under the ESB Rural Electrification Scheme

Stragill, Buncrana, County Donegal
Stunning location
Rarely can home owners boast of having a sandy beach at the bottom of their garden but this is exactly what’s on offer at this stunning front line property at Stragill outside Buncrana. Locals will understand the extreme beauty this long sandy beach provides and so can anyone else who want to call this property home. Whilst it’s accepted the 5 bedroom bungalow requires renovation, the large 1.8 acre plot really is a show stopper and provides a unique base in which to create something magical. Strongly recommended.

Silent Night being sang at Carol Service in Buncrana Donegal.
An Independent New Voice
My name is Paul Ferguson. I am a candidate in the 2014 Donegal county council elections. I feel people do not have a voice. I want to bring about change so that people will step out of the shadows to fight in others corners. I see a Donegal that is failing from the top, we need to get back to basics, get back to the fundamental foundation of our society. I want to see Donegal as a powerhouse of Ireland and Ireland a powerhouse of Europe. Those who say it cannot be done are sitting back watching others achieve it. I have lived in Buncrana most of my life from 1985 -- 2007, then I immigrated to America, like 50,000 other Irish natives, I was undocumented. I spent 4 years in San Francisco, until 2011 when I was subsequently returned back to Ireland. Upon my return I received a ten-year bar and I left behind a six-week-old son. I am not allowed to visit my child, and I don't get to watch him grow up. I have been asked is my candidacy solely about getting to my son and the answer is NO. Dylan was instrumental in my decision to run for the county council. I have become aware of how many lost voices do not get heard from our communities. Through my experience I will bring a change for a new structure of communication to give our people a voice.
