Billingshurst is a village and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. The village lies 8 miles south-west of Horsham, and 5.6 miles north-east of Pulborough. Billingshurst is located on the A29 road (the Roman Stane Street), at a point where the A272 road forms a crossroads with it. The civil parish has a land area of 7,952 acres (3,219 hectares). In the 2001 census 6,531 people lived in 2,677 households, of whom 3,451 were economically active. At the 2011 Census the population had increased to 8,232. The village's name probably came from Anglo-Saxon Billinges hyrst = Billa's son's wooded hill.
The village has a secondary school and a sixth form college, known together as The Weald School. Billingshurst Primary School (formerly two separate infant and junior schools, until a decision was taken in 2009 and implemented in 2010 to combine them into one) is situated near to The Weald.
The Weald School site contains a leisure centre with swimming pool and gym which is open to the public. A new sports area, Jubilee Fields, contains football pitches, two cricket pitches and pavilion, a fishing lake, and an exercise (trim trail) path. In the last year a new skatepark has also been added. Other facilities in the village include a tennis club and a lawn bowling club.
Billingshurst lies on the junction of the A29 and the A272 which are routes to Petworth, Petersfield, Haywards Heath, Pulborough and Bognor Regis. Billingshurst railway station, located on Station Rd. in Billingshurst, is on the main line from London Victoria to Bognor Regis and Chichester. It would take about 20 minutes to get to Crawley by train.
The village is near the Wey and Arun Canal, which waterway has not been fully navigable since the 1890s. Approximate travelling times by car from the larger towns and cities near Billingshurst are 35 minutes to Guildford, 30 minutes to Crawley and Chichester, 25 minutes to Haslemere and 35 minutes to Haywards Heath.
Billingshurst has five churches. St Mary's Church (Church of England) is the largest, with a mix of service styles, ranging from Book of Common Prayer communion services to informal family worship. Other churches are St Gabriel's Church (Catholic), Billingshurst Family Church (Evangelical; part of the Newfrontiers family of churches) and Trinity Church (United Reformed). Billingshurst Unitarian Chapel, set back behind the High Street, was founded in 1754 and is one of southeast England's oldest Nonconformist places of worship.

FORMER DANCER TURNED NUN TEACHES HOLY DANCE IN CONVENT
(10 Jun 2012) LEADIN
A former nightclub performer turned nun is literally following the Lord of the Dance.
Sister Anna Nobili has shunned the stage for prayer, but is using her passion for song and dance to encourage dance behind the convent walls.
STORYLINE:
Sister Anna Nobili praying with her dancers before a performance.
Since turning her back on Italy's nightclub scene no one in the sleepy village of Palestrina has been surprised to hear thumping house-tunes echoing from the local convent walls.
Every afternoon the convent's former wine cellar is home to an unusual dance school.
At the Holy Dance academy, students of all ages learn how to express their worship of the Lord by moving their bodies to the rhythms of hip-hop, rap, rock and house music.
The founder of the unconventional school is 42-year-old Sister Anna Nobili.
Her passion for dance emerged long before she took her vows.
In her early twenties, Anna Nobili worked as a show-girl on Italian television, and danced on the podia of Milan's trendiest night clubs.
For me this became a double-edged sword, because it involved the body. Dance was a means to be at the centre of attention and, through this art, to cover up a lack of love that I had inside me.
She says her mother had tried to convince her to go to church for a long time. When she finally went along to mass, everything changed.
Anna Nobili opted for a radical lifestyle change.
She left show business and after a few years took her vows to become a nun at the order of the Working Lady Nuns of Nazareth House.
At the beginning of her novitiate, Sister Anna stopped dancing.
When I started to meet Jesus and I left show business, I decided to give up dancing because I thought that dance didn't have anything to do with my spiritual life, with God. So I told the Lord: 'I will stop dancing, for you. And when you want, I will dance again'.
However, soon her fellow sisters convinced her to use her talent.
Sister Anna created her own style - the Holy Dance, prayers in movement.
While she has encountered some resistance from traditional church-goers against dancing during mass, her plans to spread the art of praying through dance were supported by the local Catholic hierarchy.
It was the bishop of Palestrina, Don Domenico Sigalini, who asked her to hold a course at the Carmelite convent four years ago.
The Holy Dance academy took flight immediately - at the first lesson only two children showed up. A month later, Sister Anna had thirty students.
Currently 90 students rehearse during the 20 hours the school opens its doors every week.
Every rehearsal starts with a shared prayer. Lessons include modern and jazz dance, hip hop, break, but also classical dance.
Students are between four and 50-years-old and from all walks of life.
Alessio Duranti is a warehouseman who has never danced before in his life, until he joined the Holy Dance academy three years ago. He says he told all of his colleagues about his new passion.
At the beginning not everybody understood what I was doing. Because, you know, the dancing nun. They saw it a bit the wrong way. But then I told them what I do and what I don't do here and eventually they started to understand. They even came to see the shows. That was very satisfactory,.
Sister Anna and her students also open up to the public performing shows inspired by stories from the bible, like the book of Ruth.
Margherita Zichella, who impersonates Ruth, the protagonist from this story about love, friendship and the welcoming of strangers, said that she feels very close to the main character.
More than 400 people attended the captivating show conceived by Sister Anna.
