You may notice that the full title St Chads with St Mary's is sometimes used. When St Mary's was made redundant in 1987, the Churches Conservation Trust took on responsibility for the care and preservation of the building. It is the vicar of St Chads who has spiritual over-sight of the church of St Mary which does host a few services a year. Hence the addition of St Mary to the name of St Chad. St Mary's also hosts many interesting exhibitions and is well worth a visit.
St Mary's is only a ten-minute walk from St Chads and has quality work from the 12th century to the present day. St Mary's most famous treasure is the wonderful collection of stained glass, with examples of different styles from the 14th to the 19th centuries, all of the highest quality. No other church in the country has a collection to equal it. Most of the glass was brought from elsewhere, much of it from Europe, and installed in St Mary's during the 18th and 19th centuries. Most spectacular is the huge 14th century east window depicting the Tree of Jesse, and filled with figures of Old Testament kings and prophets, in brilliantly vibrant colours. Warmth and richness is also provided by superb Victorian coloured tiles on the floor. And lifting your eyes upwards, you will see the wonderful 15th century carved oak ceiling of the nave, with a profusion of animals, birds and angels.
In March 2007 St Mary's famous collection of stained glass panels, was loaned to the prestigious Museum Schnütgen of Cologne for their international exhibition on 16th century German stained glass. Exact replicas were carefully installed to cover the six month period of the exhibition.

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, England. Shrewsbury is a market town whose centre has a largely unaltered medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. The town has historically been a centre for the wool trade and brewing. Horticulture remains popular, and the Shrewsbury Flower Show is one of the largest horticultural events in England.
Located 9 miles (14 km) east of the Welsh border, Shrewsbury serves as the commercial centre for Shropshire and mid-Wales, with a retail output of over £299 million per year and light industry and distribution centres, such as Battlefield Enterprise Park, on the outskirts. The A5 and A49 trunk roads cross near to the town, and five railway lines meet at Shrewsbury railway station.
Shrewsbury is about 14 miles (23 km) west of Telford, 43 miles (69 km) west of Birmingham and the West Midlands Conurbation, and about 153 miles (246 km) north-west of the capital, London. More locally, the town is to the east of Welshpool, with Bridgnorth and Kidderminster to the south-east. The border with Wales is 9 miles (14 km) to the west. The town centre is partially built on a hill whose elevation is, at its highest, 246 feet (75 m) above sea level. The longest river in the UK, the River Severn, flows through the town, forming a meander around its centre.
Shrewsbury is the county's public transport hub and has road and rail links to the rest of the county and country. Five railway lines connect the town to most corners of Shropshire and the region, and the town is known as the Gateway to Wales. Shrewsbury railway station is served by Arriva Trains Wales and London Midland with trains running north to Chester, Manchester, Crewe and Wrexham, south to Hereford and Cardiff, west to Aberystwyth, and east to Birmingham via Telford, Shifnal, and Wolverhampton.

Exploring The Church of St Chads in Shrewsbury
Today I am telling the story of one church and two buildings. The church of St Chad had been standing in Shrewsbury for a long time. Thomas Telford surveyed it and made his recommendations, but they were ignored. There were terrible consequences.

St.Mary's Church,Henley On Thames,Oxon,Uk(History In Description).
The exact origin of St. Mary’s is unknown, but is likely to be around 1000 – Aumericus de Harcourt is the first recorded priest, in 1204. The present structure was almost certainly pre-dated by earlier buildings, but the first recorded reference is a charter of 1272 granting an indulgence “to all contributors to the building or the repairing of the church at Henley”. St. Mary’s is basically a 13th century building, but was enlarged and remodelled in the 15th century and again in the 19th century, so the building history is hard to decipher. The 13th century church consisted of a sanctuary (chancel), nave, aisles and probably transepts. Externally there is no remnant of this church, and the Early English style of the west doorway is, in fact, Victorian.
It is also the resting place of the famous Dusty Springfield..located slighty to the side of the church tower.

England 2019 Episode 27: Shrewsbury
St Mary’s Church is the only complete medieval church in Shrewsbury. It dates from Saxon times with additions from the 12th c. onward. The spire is one of the tallest in England and has dominated the skyline for over 500 years. Inside, the soaring stone arches give way to the church's great treasure, its elaborate stained glass, including the world-famous 14th c. Jesse Window depicting Old Testament kings and prophets. The three-paneled Saint Bernard Window to the left of the Jesse Window is a 16th c. piece from Altenberg Abbey near Köln, Germany, purchased by St. Mary's in 1845 to complement the Jesse Window which, until that point, had been the only colored glass in the church.
A few blocks away, Shrewsbury's town square has a handsome 16th c. market hall. In front of the hall is a statue of Clive of India, a Shrewsbury native who distinguished himself as a British officer in Bengal and Calcutta. He was later the town's mayor and served as its representative in Parliament in the 1760s and 70s. Nearby, we stopped for a pint at the Hole in the Wall Pub.
On the west side of town, St Chad's Church, dating to 1790, is defined by its unusual circular nave. Inside, the church has some fine Victorian stained glass. The sanctuary window, created in 1840, is a copy in stained glass of a triptych in Antwerp Cathedral by Rubens.
Across the street from the church is the stunningly beautiful Quarry Park, also known as Dingle Gardens. A stone quarry had occupied the site since 1324, but since the quarry frequently flooded, it was converted to a park in 1719, with the quarry pit turned into a landscaped sunken garden in the 1870s. The fountain and statue of the goddess Sabrina was added in 1879. In the final shot, you can see the spire of St Chad's rising above the gardens.
The 11th c. Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Paul stands across the river, just outside of town. This is the monastery where the fictional BBC character Cadfael was a monk. Although most of the abbey was destroyed in the 16th c., the nave of the abbey church has survived as the local parish church. In the park adjoining the abbey is a 14th c. stone pulpit, the only other remnant of the former priory.

One Minute Vacation Video #41: The Jesse Window
St Mary’s Church in Shrewsbury dates from Saxon times. The spire is one of the tallest in England and has dominated the skyline for over 500 years. But the church's greatest treasure is the elaborate stained-glass Jesse Window, dating to the 14th century. It depicts the family tree of Jesus as described in the Book of Isaiah, tracing his lineage back to Jesse, the father of David.
ANOTHER TID-BIT: a few blocks away, Shrewsbury's town square has a handsome 16th c. market hall, and nearby, the Hole in the Wall Pub, where we stopped for a pint.
