Graves of Nancy, Unity & Diana Mitford at St Mary's Church, Swinbrook
There is a Mole on Nancy's Grave which was apparently the family's emblem. The three sisters are re-united after so much turmoil & strife. The nearby Swan Pub is dedicated to the Mitford Family. Today 24 Sep 14 Debo the youngest sister has sadly also passed away. Swinford is net to the River Windrush and is really in the most beautiful location with many circular walks possible. Pamela is also buried in the graveyard but I didn't know her headstone is separate.
On Unity's headstone 'Say not the struggle naught availeth.'
Swinbrook St Mary Part One
Swinbrook is a delightful village within walking distance of Burford. It was the childhood home of the Mitford sisters, parodied in Nancy Mitford's 'The Pursuit of Love'. Nancy, Unity and Diana are buried to the west of the church. The church has work of c1200 but the exterior is Decorated and Perpendicular with a western bell tower added in 1822. It is famous for the Fettiplace monuments, six generations of whom recline on shelves on the north wall of the chancel. A path through the churchyard leads to St. Oswald's church lost in the river meadows along the banks of the Windrush. The Windrush runs through a ford in the middle of village which seems remote and timeless. There is a wonderful pub which was once a water mill and is owned by the Duchess of Devonshire, nee Deborah Mitford and a picturesque cricket ground.

Rosemary's wedding
The wedding of Rosemary Anne Lowe to James Peter Milson at St Mary's Church, Tenbury Wells Worcestershire on 29th April 1967
Asthall Manor, Asthall, The Mitfords Beloved First House
Curiously The Mitfords did not go to Asthall Church but rather the one in Swinbrook as Lord Redesdale their father felt he could control the sermons easier. One other curiosity with Asthall Manor is that the girls had to share bedrooms as there were insufficient to go round one of the reasons he had a new house built. Deborah (Debo) the Dowager Lady Devonshire the youngest sister has just sadly dies (sept 2014) so eyewitness memories of this period are now lost.
