- The Tiger Inn Stowting
The Tiger Inn Stowting offers everything a traditional country pub should. Tucked in the downs between Ashford and Canterbury this pub may prove difficult for some to find but it's worth persevering, once found never forgotten!
The Tiger Inn Stowting is run by Emma Oliver & Benn Jarvis, they have been busy putting the finer touches on your surroundings to make it even more cosy and relaxing. Outside there is plenty of room for al fresco dining when the weather permits, along with a recently constructed old oak framed smoking shelter, which houses a mixture of pews and bar stools made from old tractor seats! There is also an environmentally friendly roasting hot heater to take away those late evening chills. Inside it is traditionally furnished with newly cushioned dark wood pews in the bar and a mix of antique and classic pine tables, chairs and pews in the restaurant.
The Tiger Inn Stowting is tastefully decorated throughout with dried hops around the ceiling, soft bulb lighting as well as candles stuck in bottles on each table, the bar area has traditional dark wood floorboards with open fires at each end. There are some lovely faded rugs on the stone floor in the newly used part of the restaurant at the rear of the pub, this area is great for larger parties. There is an array of books in the bar, which are intended to be read rather than left for decoration as well as brewery memorabilia & paintings all around, there is always something interesting to catch your eye.

16/1/16 Peal; Double Norwich CB Major, Borden, Kent. Farewe
+ This video was kindly made by one of the local Borden ringers, and was recorded between 11:50am and noon, so this is about halfway through the peal +
On Sep 22nd 1945, a then 15 year-old Stanley M. Evans rang his first peal. It was on the finely-toned octave at Borden, Kent (near Sittingbourne). An idea was conceived in 2015 to mark this splendid anniversary, but then it was announced by the Vicar (PinC 2005-08, and Vicar since) that he would be retiring in Jan 2016.
It was thus resolved that a peal of the same method as rung 22/9/45 would be attempted on the fine but challenging Borden octave.
This was duly accomplished in the short space of two hours and fifty three minutes, and stands as quite a feat of endurance by the whole band.
The 'go' of the bells has, however, been significantly improved since September 2013, when a full day was spent amongst the bells tightening the fittings. The next plan is to renovate the baldrick tops of the old clappers.
These lovely bells, which were cast and hung in 1802 by Mears I of Whitechapel, received a partial rehang by Snelling (a practical ringer from Sittingbourne) in 1886. The front six bells were quarter-turned and hung on new headstocks with new canon-straps. All the bells received new gudgeons, bearings and wheels (the 7-8 still hang from their original 1802 Mears canon straps and bolts on their original headstocks).
The bellframe, and existing stocks of 7-8 were cut/built/supplied by Sweetlove of Leeds, Kent, who was one of the famous Leeds Youths.
